That combination makes it a compelling collector’s watch, but “grail” is a personal judgment—and its rarity does not establish what it is worth today.
What is the Citizen ChronoMaster 500M?
Michael Stockton’s Fratello Watches article identifies reference 4-540263 as the Citizen ChronoMaster 500M Chronometer and says it was produced for one year, in 1969. The watch pairs a large stainless-steel monobloc case with a black dial, date display, and unidirectional dive bezel. Stockton’s May 13, 2021 overview is a detailed secondary-source account; the specifications below are reported there, rather than independently confirmed against a Citizen archive.

Why collectors regard it as a grail
A rare, short-lived reference
Stockton describes the model as very rare and infrequently encountered. He relays that a collector’s catalog contained roughly two dozen examples. That is an approximate count reported second-hand, not a verified production total, so it supports the impression of scarcity but cannot tell us how many were made or how many survive.
Unusual specifications for a vintage Citizen diver
The reported 500 m water resistance, monobloc construction, and chronometer-certified automatic caliber distinguish the ChronoMaster in the article’s account. Its 44 mm diameter and 53 mm lug-to-lug span also give it substantial wrist presence. Those figures describe the watch; they do not guarantee that it will feel comfortable, particularly on a smaller wrist.

Rare does not mean historically most influential
The article compares the Citizen with Seiko’s 300 m 6215 and 6159 divers. On the stated water-resistance figure, the Citizen is rated higher: 500 m versus 300 m for the Seiko models discussed. Stockton nevertheless considers the Seikos more influential in design, and says the Citizen wore less comfortably on his own wrist. These are the author’s comparative judgments, not a universal ranking of the watches.
What does one cost?
There is no current valuation established by the cited source. Stockton’s 2021 article gives a historical range of €8,000 to well above five figures, varying with condition and collector demand. That dated observation is not a present-day appraisal, and the article does not provide recent sales data. The reported original retail price was JPY 35,000; it should not be confused with a modern market value.

For a watch this rare, a quoted asking price alone would not settle value. Condition and the strength of the evidence for the specific example matter, and the source does not provide a current transaction record or an official production figure.
Is it wearable today?
The dimensions make this a large vintage diver by the standards of many wrists: 44 mm across, 53 mm lug to lug, and 14 mm thick. Stockton found it less comfortable than the Seiko divers he discusses, but his experience is individual. Trying an example on wrist is more informative than relying on diameter alone.

- Round silver-tone watch featuring white dial with stick indices, luminous hands, and mini date window
- 39 mm stainless steel case with mineral dial window
- Movement: Conventional Battery G111, Japanese quartz movement with analog display.
- Croco-embossed leather band with buckle closure
- Water resistant to 50 m (165 ft): In general, suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, but not diving or snorkeling
The reported lug width is 20 mm, so that is the starting point when looking for a replacement strap. Stockton says a flexible modern Tropic-style strap made the watch more wearable for him. Check the actual watch’s fit and spring-bar arrangement before buying a strap; the source does not validate a particular product or brand.

For collectors drawn to rare Japanese dive watches, reference 4-540263 has a strong grail case: a one-year 1969 production run, distinctive reported specifications, and examples that the 2021 account describes as seldom encountered. But “grail” is a collector’s label, not an objective status. Its scarcity and historical appeal are clear in that account; its current value and official production total are not.
