Citizen’s Eco-Drive 365 is an analogue watch built around a striking manufacturer-stated figure: after a full charge, its E365 movement can run for 365 days without more charging. That makes it a compelling entry in the light-powered-watch field—but not an automatic winner. Size, styling, features, and how each brand defines its reserve matter just as much as the headline number.
What is the Citizen Eco-Drive 365?
Citizen introduced three Eco-Drive 365 models in 2023: the regular-production BN1015-52E and BN1014-55E, and the limited-edition BN1010-05E. The collection reinterprets a Citizen quartz watch from 1973 and uses the E365 light-powered movement. Citizen’s launch announcement planned a fall/winter 2023 release; that is a historical schedule, not a statement of current availability. Citizen’s 2023 launch announcement
The BN1015-52E is the clearest example of the collection’s character: a substantial, conventional analogue watch rather than a digital instrument or smartwatch. Citizen’s U.S. product page lists these specifications:
- 42.5 mm-wide black stainless-steel case and 22 mm lug width
- Three-hand display with date
- Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
- 100-metre water resistance
- Accuracy of ±15 seconds per month
- Five-year limited warranty
Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent test. The dimensions and black steel finish give the BN1015-52E a strong wrist presence; buyers who prefer a compact or understated watch should consider fit and appearance before focusing on reserve length. The other two launch models
Citizen projected launch prices of USD 480 for BN1014-55E and USD 875 for limited BN1010-05E, compared with USD 530 for BN1015-52E. These were 2023 projections, not current prices. Citizen said the BN1010-05E was limited to 1,200 pieces worldwide; it has lab-grown ruby indices and an LWG-certified calf-leather strap. Citizen’s 2023 launch announcement
What does “365 days” mean in practice?
Citizen says the E365 movement runs for 365 days on a single full charge, even in complete darkness. The E365 manual likewise describes 365 days of operation when fully charged and without additional charging. This is a model-specific, manufacturer-stated power-reserve figure—not a promise that every Eco-Drive watch has the same reserve or that the E365 never needs light. Citizen’s general Eco-Drive guidance is broader: the company says most of its light-powered watches run for more than six months on a full charge, with model-specific exceptions. It recommends five or six hours of direct sunlight per month for best results. Keep that general guidance distinct from the E365’s full-charge reserve: the long reserve is useful insurance against darkness or infrequent wear, while regular access to light helps maintain charge. Citizen Eco-Drive technology overview
The practical distinction is between how long a fully charged watch can run without more light and how it receives energy over time. Eco-Drive converts natural or artificial light into energy. The 365-day figure answers the first question for the E365; it does not remove the second.

How does it compare with other light-powered watches?
There is no single reserve number that fairly ranks an analogue watch, an outdoor digital watch, a GPS timekeeper, and a connected smartwatch. Compare what each is designed to do, and read the conditions attached to any battery or reserve claim.
| Watch | Published reserve or battery figure | What distinguishes it | Best comparison lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citizen Eco-Drive 365 BN1015-52E | 365 days after a full charge, according to Citizen | Analogue three-hand display with date; sapphire crystal; 100 m water resistance | Long darkness reserve in a conventional everyday watch |
| Casio Pro Trek PRJ-B001-1 | About seven months in normal use after charge, or 18 months in darkness with power save, according to Casio | Tough Solar, digital outdoor functions, Bluetooth phone linking, 100 m water resistance | Outdoor utility and digital features, not dress-watch styling |
| Garmin Instinct Solar | For smartwatch mode, up to 24 days plus 30 days under solar conditions: all-day wear and three hours outdoors per day at 50,000 lux, according to Garmin | Connected outdoor smartwatch | Smartwatch battery life under specified solar exposure, not analogue-watch darkness reserve |
| Seiko Astron HAB007J1 | Approximately six months when fully charged and around two years in power-save mode, according to Seiko | GPS solar movement with time-zone and time-adjustment functions | GPS timekeeping and travel convenience, rather than simple analogue operation |
Figures in the table come from each manufacturer and describe different use conditions, so they are not directly interchangeable. Casio Pro Trek PRJ-B001-1 Garmin Instinct Solar Seiko Astron HAB007J1

Which kind of light-powered watch suits you?
Choose the Citizen if you want an analogue everyday watch
The E365’s case for itself is straightforward: a conventional three-hand watch with a date, sapphire crystal, 100-metre water resistance, and a notably long stated reserve after a full charge. The trade-off is its 42.5 mm case, which may feel large depending on your wrist and preference. It is a sensible choice for someone prioritizing an analogue design and less frequent concern about charging, rather than phone-linked or GPS functions.
Choose Casio Pro Trek for outdoor digital utility
The PRJ-B001-1 is aimed at a different use. Its digital presentation, Tough Solar power, Bluetooth phone linking, and power-save reserve make it an outdoor-oriented alternative. Its reserve figures distinguish normal use from extended darkness with power save; that is not the same framing as Citizen’s fully charged E365 darkness claim.

Choose Garmin for connected outdoor features
The Instinct Solar is a smartwatch, so its battery figure depends on usage and solar exposure. Garmin’s stated solar condition—three hours outdoors each day at 50,000 lux, with all-day wear—belongs alongside the number. A smartwatch’s feature set may be valuable, but its battery-life figure cannot be used as a direct analogue-watch reserve comparison.
Choose Seiko Astron for GPS time adjustment
The Astron HAB007J1 emphasizes GPS-based time-zone and time adjustment. Its approximately six-month full-charge reserve and roughly two-year power-save reserve describe a watch with a different priority from the E365: convenient timekeeping across locations rather than a simple long-running analogue display.
Is the Eco-Drive 365 available now?
Availability and pricing depend on region and can change. Citizen’s U.S. BN1015-52E listing displayed “Sold Out” when accessed on October 8, 2026; that is a dated listing observation, not proof that the model is permanently discontinued or unavailable elsewhere. The launch prices above were projected in 2023 and should not be treated as current retail prices. Check the relevant regional Citizen listing or an authorized retailer for present stock and pricing.
What the available figures can—and cannot—show
Citizen’s 2023 announcement said its Eco-Drive watches were worn in 140 countries and regions. That is a company-reported reach figure, not an independent market statistic. Likewise, the reserve and accuracy numbers in this article are manufacturer-published specifications; they do not establish a comparative lab ranking or hands-on performance advantage.
