The Gübelin Ipsomatic is a 170-piece anniversary watch created for the Swiss firm’s 170th anniversary and designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. Its sculptural 39 mm platinum case revisits the look and self-winding identity of Gübelin Ipsomatic watches from the 1950s and 1960s, while housing a refurbished historical Felsa calibre 1560. Gübelin also says the watch’s Proof of Authenticity combines physical tracers with its Provenance Proof Blockchain; those tracer-performance claims are the manufacturer’s, not the result of independent testing.
What is the Gübelin Ipsomatic?
The Ipsomatic is Gübelin’s 170th-anniversary wristwatch, listed by the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) as a 170-piece limited edition launched in October 2024. Its reference is 16B-1003-42. The GPHG entry records a CHF 34,900 price including VAT, but that is a published record value rather than confirmation of a current offer.
Gübelin presents the model as a contemporary return to the Ipsomatic name and design history. “Ipso” refers to self-winding in the name, and the original Ipsomatic models date to the 1950s and 1960s, according to the designer’s announcement. Gübelin says the new watch revives the historical Felsa movement.
How Calatrava shaped the design
Calatrava’s design is expressed most clearly in the case: flowing, organic lines replace the visual simplicity of a conventional round watch. The platinum case measures 39 mm across and 12.6 mm thick. The designer’s announcement also calls attention to vents between the lugs, which extend the case’s sculptural treatment toward the strap.

The case back is engraved with Calatrava’s drawing of two bulls. He described them as symbols of “the positive energy, the force and the permanence in a universe which is constantly changing in time.” His broader collaboration with Gübelin was guided by the idea that time is bound up with change and movement. The result makes the watch’s architectural shape—not just its anniversary inscription—the central design statement.
Gübelin’s product page describes the watch as a collaboration with Calatrava and emphasizes the organic, sculptural quality of his design language. The exact reference, dimensions and technical specifications are recorded in the GPHG product entry; the designer’s own announcement provides detail on the case and bull motif.

Movement: a refurbished historical Felsa calibre
The Ipsomatic uses a self-winding mechanical Felsa calibre 1560. The GPHG lists a 43-hour power reserve and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour; the watch displays hours and minutes. These are the specifications recorded for this reference, not results from an independent timing test.
Project contributor DuBois et fils says the calibre came from its collection of historical movements and was disassembled, cleaned, refurbished and regulated for the watch. That provenance detail comes from the contributor; it does not establish the movement’s full service history before it entered the collection.

What Proof of Authenticity means on the Ipsomatic
Gübelin describes its Proof of Authenticity as a combination of physical tracers and the Provenance Proof Blockchain. Its physical-tracer page says nanolabels are invisible even under a microscope and are designed to remain readable after polishing, washing or irradiation. These are Gübelin’s descriptions and durability claims; no independent test of the tracers is established here.
The system should therefore be understood as the manufacturer’s provenance and authenticity documentation approach, rather than as an independently verified guarantee. The available information explains the components Gübelin uses, but does not establish external validation of a specific Ipsomatic’s tracer or blockchain record.
