A manual-wind watch runs on energy stored by turning its crown, and a time-only watch displays the time without a date or other complications. The right choice depends on more than price: decide whether you want a dress, field, or vintage-inspired style, then compare the exact model’s dimensions, reserve, water resistance, movement, and service support. Prices below are historical guide listings, not current offers.

What “manual-wind” and “time-only” mean

A manual mechanical movement stores energy in a mainspring that you wind by turning the crown. Its power reserve is how long the watch can run after winding; once that energy is used, the watch stops until you wind it again. “Time-only” describes the display: no date or other complications.

Manual-wind does not always mean manual-wind-only. Some automatic watches also allow crown winding, but their winding behavior is model-specific. Check the exact reference and its instructions rather than assuming every automatic works the same way.

Representative watches across styles and prices

The examples below illustrate different approaches rather than a ranked list. The prices are editorial listings from different publication dates and should not be treated as current quotes. Confirm the exact reference, specification, availability, and local price before buying.

Model Style and cited specifications Historical listed price
Timex Marlin Hand Wound Vintage-inspired, compact three-hand watch. Fratello’s 2022 article describes a 34 mm case and acrylic crystal; Teddy Baldassarre’s April 2026 guide lists 34 mm diameter, 10 mm thickness, 41 mm lug-to-lug, 18 mm strap width, acrylic crystal, and 30 m water resistance. The 2022 article says to wind daily. It notes that Timex had not identified the movement’s origin in that article; that was the author’s observation, not current brand confirmation. $199 in Fratello’s 2022 article; $259 in Teddy Baldassarre’s April 2026 guide. These are dated listings, not verified current offers.
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Field-watch alternative. Fratello’s 2022 guide lists a 38 mm steel case, H-50 hand-wound movement, 80-hour reserve, 50 m water resistance, and sapphire crystal. Teddy Baldassarre’s April 2026 guide lists 38 mm diameter, 9.5 mm thickness, 47 mm lug-to-lug, 20 mm lug width, sapphire, 50 m water resistance, and H-50. The 80-hour reserve is roughly three days between windings. $525 in Fratello’s 2022 guide; $675 in Teddy Baldassarre’s April 2026 guide. These are dated listings, not verified current offers.
Stowa Marine Classic 36 Roman Hand Wound Dressier, marine-chronometer-inspired option. Fratello’s 2022 guide lists a hand-wound ETA/Peseux 7001, 42-hour reserve, small seconds, and 50 m water resistance; it describes daily winding as appropriate for that reserve. €1,150 in Fratello’s 2022 guide; not a verified current offer.
NOMOS Club Ref. 703 Fratello’s 2022 article reports a 36 mm case, Alpha hand-wound movement, 43-hour reserve, and 100 m water resistance. Those details do not establish that Ref. 703 remains available now. No price for Ref. 703 is established here. NOMOS’s hand-wound catalog page search snippet showed a Finnish-region price from €1,860, but that price was not tied to Ref. 703.
Grand Seiko SBGW231 Fratello’s 2022 article reports a 37.3 mm case, 9S64 manual-wind movement, 72-hour reserve, 30 m water resistance, and stated accuracy of +10/-1 seconds per day. Treat the accuracy as the article’s cited specification, not a promise for every example or a current guarantee. $4,300 in Fratello’s 2022 article; not a verified current offer.

The dated comparisons come from Fratello Watches’ 2022 manual-wind guide and Teddy Baldassarre’s April 2026 guide. They show why a brand name or broad price tier is not enough: the examples differ in size, reserve, water resistance, materials, and style.

How to choose the right watch for your budget

Start with the kind of watch you will wear

  • Vintage-inspired daily wear: The Marlin is the smaller, retro-styled example. Its acrylic crystal and 30 m water-resistance listing are different trade-offs from the Hamilton’s sapphire and 50 m listing.
  • Field style: The Khaki Field Mechanical is the cited field-watch option, with a longer listed reserve than the other examples whose reserve is stated here.
  • Dressier design: The Stowa Marine Classic offers small seconds and a marine-chronometer-inspired presentation. NOMOS and Grand Seiko illustrate more expensive hand-wound alternatives, but availability and pricing must be checked by exact reference and market.

Check fit using three dimensions

Diameter alone does not tell you how a watch will sit. Compare case diameter, thickness, and lug-to-lug length with a watch you already find comfortable. For instance, the April 2026 guide lists the 38 mm Hamilton at 9.5 mm thick and 47 mm lug-to-lug, while its 34 mm Marlin listing is 10 mm thick and 41 mm lug-to-lug. The smaller diameter does not make the Marlin thinner.

Also check the lug width before shopping for a replacement strap. The April 2026 Hamilton listing gives a 20 mm lug width; the Marlin listing gives 18 mm. Those figures apply to the listed examples and should be confirmed against the exact reference.

Compare ownership details, not just the headline price

  • Power reserve: Longer reserve means more time before the watch stops if you do not wind it. Compare the stated reserve with your routine, and distinguish a model’s specification from a general rule for manual watches.
  • Water resistance: Treat the rating as a model specification, not a guarantee that every vintage-styled or dress watch suits swimming. Check the manufacturer’s current guidance for the exact reference and condition.
  • Crystal and legibility: Compare crystal material and dial readability alongside appearance. The cited Marlin listings use acrylic; the Hamilton listing uses sapphire. These are meaningful differences, not merely price-tier labels.
  • Movement and service: Verify whether the movement is manual-only or also used in an automatic, and ask about local service access, warranty, and after-sales arrangements before purchase.
  • Current total cost: Prices in the guides vary by publication date and model context. Check the brand or an authorized retailer in your region for current price, exact reference, warranty, and availability.

How often to wind one

Follow the instructions for the exact watch; there is no single winding interval or turn count that applies to every movement. In the cited examples, Fratello describes daily winding for the Marlin and the 42-hour Stowa, while the Hamilton’s listed 80-hour reserve is roughly three days. Winding interval depends on the movement’s reserve and when you want the watch running.

Turn the crown as the manufacturer directs and stop when its instructions say to stop. If the watch has stopped, you will need to wind it and set the time again. A manual for one automatic skeleton watch says that model can be crown-wound when not worn; that does not establish the same behavior for all automatics.

Before you buy

  1. Choose the style and approximate price range that suit how you will wear the watch.
  2. Identify the exact reference and confirm that its movement is manual-wind-only or, if automatic, that its winding behavior is documented.
  3. Compare diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length, and lug width with your fit preferences and any strap plans.
  4. Check the official specification for power reserve, water resistance, crystal, and winding instructions.
  5. Confirm current regional price, availability, warranty, and service arrangements with the brand or an authorized retailer.

For example, NOMOS’s hand-wound watch catalog is a brand source, but the cited catalog snippet’s Finnish-region starting price does not establish current availability or pricing for Club Ref. 703. Use the same exact-reference check for any model you are considering.
