The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Rétrograde is a manually wound Reverso that uses the case’s flip-over design to give its chronograph a second display surface. Its defining appeal is not simply having two sides: the original Calibre 829 model pairs a conventional time display with a chronograph and retrograde-minute indication on the reverse. It belongs to a complication lineage that began in 1996; the later Reverso Tribute Chronograph is a distinct interpretation powered by Calibre 860.
What makes the Reverso Chronographe Rétrograde distinctive?
Most chronographs put their timing indications on the same face as the time display. The Reverso’s swivelling case offers another option: turn the case over to reveal the chronograph display on its reverse. On the Calibre 829 version, the reverse combines chronograph indications with a retrograde minute display, while the front serves as the conventional time face.
That arrangement makes the complication part of the Reverso’s case design rather than a standard chronograph layout added to it. The watch remains recognizably a Reverso, but rotating the case changes which display is visible.
From polo-protective case to complicated watch
Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the Reverso’s beginning to 1931. The pivoting case was conceived to protect the watch face during polo, and its Art Deco lines and reversible construction became defining features of the collection. The case later became a platform for complications including the chronograph, tourbillon and minute repeater. The Chronographe Rétrograde is a particularly direct expression of that idea: the case itself helps separate timekeeping from chronograph display.
Calibre 829 and the 1996 original
Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the original Reverso Chronograph, equipped with Calibre 829, to 1996. The manufacturer describes the movement as the first shaped chronograph movement in a rectangular case and as the company’s first manually wound integrated chronograph developed from scratch in the post-quartz era. These are the manufacturer’s historical characterizations, rather than specifications that should be transferred to later Reverso chronographs.

Calibre 829 matters because it was designed for a rectangular watch architecture and the Reverso’s unusual display concept. The modern Reverso Tribute Chronograph revisits the 1996 design but uses Calibre 860. It is a later interpretation, not another name for the original movement. What is known about reference 270.269?
A 2019 specialist review describes reference 270.269 as an 18k rose-gold Reverso with manual Calibre 829, hours, minutes, date and a chronograph with retrograde minutes. For that specific reference description, the case measures 25.5 mm by 42.2 mm and 9.7 mm thick. These dimensions belong to the reviewed example and should not be assumed to describe every Reverso Chronograph or material variant. See The 1916 Company’s reference 270.269 review.

Do not treat the 1996 Calibre 829 watch and the modern Calibre 860 Tribute as interchangeable listings. Compare the exact reference and movement first, then use the listing’s details to understand what watch is actually being offered.
- Reference and calibre: Confirm the reference and whether the watch is the original Calibre 829 model or the later Calibre 860 Tribute.
- Material and dimensions: Verify the stated case material and measurements for that reference. The 25.5 × 42.2 mm, 9.7 mm description applies to reference 270.269 as covered by the specialist review.
- Condition and documentation: Examine the case, dial and displays, and ask what service records and supporting documentation accompany the watch. The available sources do not establish a service interval or specific service requirements.
- Listing context: Compare dated listings for the same reference, material and condition, and check the listing’s region, service history, completeness and return terms.
Current asking prices, sold-price trends and live stock are not established here, so a reliable price conclusion cannot be drawn from the available evidence. A single listing—or a quote for a different reference—would not establish the market value of reference 270.269.
