Enamel and lacquer describe ways of finishing a surface; guilloché describes a pattern cut into it. A watch can combine them: one Patek Philippe dial, for example, places hand-guilloché work beneath transparent blue Grand Feu enamel. These names help explain how a dial looks and is made, but they do not establish a universal ranking for durability, value, or legibility.
Finish, pattern, and base material are not the same
When comparing colored watch dials, separate three questions: how the color is applied, what texture or pattern is visible, and what material forms the dial beneath the finish. A dial can have a brass base, a colored surface treatment, and a separate pattern. The categories can overlap rather than exclude one another.

TAG Heuer says brass is commonly used for dials, while other metals and less common natural or decorative materials are also used. A finish name alone therefore does not tell you the dial’s underlying material. TAG Heuer also describes dial-making and completion as involving 40 to 50 steps, sometimes as many as 70; that is a general manufacturing figure from the brand, not a count for any particular finish. TAG Heuer’s overview of dial finishes explains its terminology and examples.

How enamel and lacquer differ
Enamel: powder applied in layers and fired
Breguet describes grand feu enamel as a process that begins by crushing and grinding enamel into fine powder, then calibrating and purifying it. The artisan applies the material in layers with a brush and fires it at high temperature. The intended result can be translucent or opaque; firing can also change the color as oxides react, so each firing must be accounted for. Read Breguet’s description of craftsmanship and watch decorations for its account of the process.

Lacquer and varnish: colored surface treatments
Manufacturers use lacquer and varnish to create colored dial surfaces, but the reviewed descriptions do not specify one universal chemistry, coat thickness, repair method, or service life for every maker’s formulation. Patek Philippe documents a lacquered purple dial with a wave motif on Nautilus Ref. 7010R-013, and a lacquered red dial with a black-gradient rim on Grand Complications Ref. 5271/12P-010. These are examples of the brand’s documented designs, not claims about current availability. Patek Philippe also lists varnishing among the techniques used to produce dial colors. Patek Philippe’s dial page shows these examples.
Enamel and lacquer are different finishing approaches, but the available manufacturer descriptions do not support a blanket claim that one is always more durable, more expensive, or longer-lasting than the other.

How other dial patterns and finishes look
Guilloché: a pattern cut into metal
Guilloché is a patterned engraving technique, not simply a color. Patek Philippe describes lines cut into metal with an engine-turning machine: straight-line engines make geometric grooves, while rose engines create curved patterns. The pattern can remain exposed or sit beneath a transparent coating. On Grand Complications Ref. 5178G-012, Patek Philippe documents a hand-guilloché swirling pattern beneath transparent Grand Feu blue enamel, illustrating how a pattern and a finish can coexist. See Patek Philippe’s account of guillochage.
Breguet says guilloché was used historically to reduce the effect of light rays on smooth surfaces and improve legibility. That is the brand’s historical explanation, not evidence of a universal modern legibility advantage across watches. Breguet’s history of guilloché in watchmaking describes that account.

Sunburst, graining, fumé, and frosting
- Sunburst or sunray: radiating lines create circular reflections that shift with the light and viewing angle.
- Graining or brushing: fine lines create a linear, circular, or radial texture, depending on the treatment.
- Fumé: a gradient effect, often making the center and edge appear different in tone.
- Frosting: a fine, matte texture rather than a smooth, glossy-looking surface.
- Electroplated color: color can be produced through galvanisation baths, a process TAG Heuer includes among dial-finishing approaches.
These are useful visual distinctions, not a single universal taxonomy shared in precisely the same way by every manufacturer. TAG Heuer discusses sunray-brushed, grained, lacquered, enamelled, frosted, fumé, guilloché, and hammered approaches; Breguet describes sunburst lines and finely textured frosting. TAG Heuer’s article and Breguet’s craftsmanship page give brand-specific examples.
Compare what you can see—and what the evidence supports
| Approach | How it is made or described | Typical surface or light effect |
|---|---|---|
| Enamel | Fine enamel powder applied in layers and fired, as described by Breguet. | Can be translucent or opaque; firing may affect color. |
| Lacquer or varnish | Colored surface treatments; makers document examples but not one universal formulation. | Can appear as a solid color or be combined with a motif or gradient. |
| Guilloché | Lines cut into metal with straight-line or rose engines, as described by Patek Philippe. | Visible geometric or curved pattern; may be covered by transparent enamel. |
| Sunburst, graining, or brushing | Finishing terms used for lines or fine surface textures. | Structured reflections that vary with pattern and viewing angle. |
| Fumé or frosting | A gradient effect or a fine, matte texture. | Fumé varies in tone across the dial; frosting softens surface reflections. |
| Electroplating | TAG Heuer describes galvanisation baths as one way to achieve color. | Color treatment; the specific appearance depends on the watch’s execution. |
Use these descriptions to identify process and appearance, not to infer performance. The manufacturer sources do not provide a controlled comparison across brands for scratch resistance, color retention, repairability, lifespan, price, or failure rates. For an individual watch, check its maker’s construction details rather than assuming a finish label answers those questions.

Assess contrast and legibility on the actual watch
A dial’s readability depends on how its hands and markers stand out against its color and texture. A reflective surface may look different as the watch moves; a pattern can add visual detail; neither fact alone tells you whether the time will be easy to read. Examine the specific dial in ordinary viewing conditions, paying attention to marker contrast, hand shape and finish, and whether reflections obscure them. Do not assume enamel, lacquer, guilloché, or a dark gradient guarantees better or worse legibility.
What manufacturing figures do—and do not—tell you
Patek Philippe says creating one of its dials takes four to six months and involves 50 to 200 operations. The page does not state a year for those figures, and they describe that maker’s dial production rather than a comparison among enamel, lacquer, or other finishes. TAG Heuer’s broader estimate of 40 to 50 steps, sometimes as many as 70, likewise concerns making and completing a dial generally. Neither set of figures demonstrates that one finish performs better than another. Patek Philippe’s dial page gives its manufacturing figures.
