Possibly—but there is no confirmed successor or redesign. Tissot continues to use Powermatic 80 in current watches and describes several refinement levels. Its published material points to an established movement platform, not a forthcoming replacement. The clearest way to understand its direction is to look at how the movement is built, how its current versions differ, and what Tissot is putting into watches today.
What Powermatic 80 is—and why it lasts up to 80 hours
Tissot says it introduced Powermatic 80 in 2013 as a technical evolution of the ETA 2824, developed with ETA. The brand attributes the longer reserve in part to reducing the movement’s frequency from 4 Hz to 3 Hz, lowering energy use. Tissot describes a power reserve of up to 80 hours, compared with the 42-hour conventional reserve used as its point of comparison. Tissot’s Powermatic 80 overview explains the brand’s account of the development.
Tissot’s technical article also says the movement uses a narrower barrel-arbor core to accommodate a longer mainspring, along with a revised balance wheel and regulation system. It describes Nivachron as a titanium-alloy balance spring intended to improve resistance to magnetic fields. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its engineering, not independent comparative test results. Tissot’s explanation of Powermatic 80 precision levels provides further detail.
How the current Powermatic 80 levels differ
“Powermatic 80” is a platform name, not a guarantee that every watch has the same precision specification. Tissot currently describes three levels. The figures below are Tissot’s published specifications, accessed in 2026; confirm the exact watch reference before relying on a particular tier.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless steel case 40mm diameter x 14.1mm thick; Exhibition case back; Black dial; Luminous hands.Band Length: 205mm
- NH35A Japanese Automatic movement, 24 jewel; Assembled in Malaysia; Watch weight 155 grams
- Includes gift box, instructions and 3 year limited manufacturer warranty; Invicta Customer Service can be reached at 1-800-327-7682 for questions (re: Additional links, band replacement, band adjustment, warranty questions, etc.)
| Tissot level | Published daily variation range | Regulation figure | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | −4 to +10 seconds per day | ±7 seconds per day; regulated at +3 seconds | Standard refinement level |
| Elaborated | −2 to +8 seconds per day | ±5 seconds per day; regulated at +3 seconds | Tissot names the PRX and Le Locle as examples |
| COSC-certified | −4 to +6 seconds per day | ±5 seconds per day; regulated at +1 second | Includes chronometer certification |
Tissot says power reserve, reliability and anti-magnetic performance remain consistent across the levels, with differences focused on finishing and precision. That statement does not make every watch identical in its other specifications, and the published figures should not be treated as a guarantee for every individual watch in daily use.
What current Tissot watches show about the platform
PRX Powermatic 80
A Swatch Group archive entry for a specific 40 mm PRX Powermatic 80 version lists 100 m water resistance and ETA calibre 80.111. That version beats at 3 Hz, has a Nivachron balance spring and is specified for up to 80 hours of reserve. These are specifications for the documented PRX version, not universal specifications for every Powermatic 80 watch. Swatch Group’s 2021 PRX archive entry records those details.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Gentleman 38 mm
Tissot’s announcement for the Gentleman 38 mm also describes a Powermatic 80 movement with up to 80 hours of reserve and a Nivachron balance spring. It says the model is compatible with Tissot’s 18 mm accessory straps; check the precise reference when choosing a strap. Tissot’s Gentleman 38 mm announcement gives the model-specific information.
Ballade
Tissot identifies the Ballade as using a COSC-certified Powermatic 80 level. That makes it an example of the platform’s certified refinement option, but the cited model information does not establish a full technical comparison across Ballade references. Tissot’s Ballade collection page describes its COSC-certified movement.

What a future upgrade might mean—and what is not confirmed
The current evidence supports continuity and variation within the platform: Tissot is still using Powermatic 80 in watches, and it offers versions with different stated precision levels, including a COSC-certified option. It does not establish a new generation, technical redesign, successor calibre or launch date. Any claim that a specific upgrade is coming would be speculation, not a confirmed Tissot announcement.
Nor do the cited sources establish comparative long-term accuracy, service intervals, durability or repair costs. The published specifications explain what Tissot says the movement is designed to deliver; they do not substitute for independent, model-specific testing.

How to compare two Powermatic 80 watches
Start with the exact reference numbers, since both movement refinement and watch configuration can vary. Compare the movement claims separately from the watch itself:
- Refinement and stated accuracy: Identify the level and daily variation range listed for each exact reference.
- Balance spring and certification: Check whether the watch specifies Nivachron and whether it carries COSC certification; do not assume either from the Powermatic 80 name alone.
- Case and water resistance: Compare the dimensions and water-resistance rating for the specific model.
- Fit and style: Check bracelet or strap compatibility, along with case shape and design, against how you intend to wear the watch.
This separates movement differences from the practical choices that determine whether a particular PRX, Gentleman or Ballade suits you.
