Daniel Dreifuss founded Maurice de Mauriac in Zurich in 1997, after moving from New York banking into private-label watchmaking. He later built a family-run brand known for personal service, customizable watches and a distinctive Zurich identity. Calling him a “genius of elegant solutions” is an appreciative description, not a documented award or quotation; the clearest evidence for it lies in the way he connected design, practical choices and the personal meaning of a watch.
Who was Daniel Dreifuss?
Dreifuss was a Zurich-born watch entrepreneur who died on 25 August 2023, aged 63. In an obituary published on 2 September 2023, NZZ Bellevue’s watch journalist Timm Delfs reported that Dreifuss had been ill with cancer for two years. The sources establish his year of birth and age at death, but not an exact birth date.
His early career took him far from the family watch business he would eventually build. He worked as a banker in New York, returned to Switzerland after a financial downturn in the mid-1990s, and entered the watch trade through private-label production. In 1997, he founded Maurice de Mauriac in Zurich. NZZ Bellevue and Zurich City Tours both give that founding year.
That transition—from banking to making watches under his own name—set the pattern for a business that was independent in scale and personal in character. Dreifuss was not simply selling a design: he cultivated a relationship between the object, the person choosing it and the place where it was made.

How did he shape Maurice de Mauriac?
Personalization as part of the experience
Dreifuss’s approach gave customers a role in choosing how a watch looked and felt. A Hello Zurich advertorial profile describes customers selecting straps and other components for personalized watches, and records Dreifuss’s view that a watch is “the thing that you wear closest to your heart.” The remark reflects his own way of explaining the emotional value of a watch, rather than a universal rule about why people wear one.
NZZ Bellevue also notes that Dreifuss traded in NATO straps—textile bands that can change a watch’s appearance and wearing character. If you are considering a NATO-style textile watch strap, check your watch’s lug width and the strap’s attachment and clasp compatibility first; the cited sources do not establish a size that fits every Maurice de Mauriac model.

Minimalism with a design collaborator
In 2014, Dreifuss began the Line L collection with industrial designer Fabian Schwärzler. NZZ describes the collection as minimalist. That collaboration offers a concrete example of the balance behind the “elegant solutions” characterization: an identifiable design idea, shaped with a specialist, rather than an unsupported claim that Dreifuss personally designed every watch or pioneered a particular technology.
A Zurich identity and a family business
The brand’s Zurich roots were part of its identity, alongside its family ownership and direct relationship with customers. Hello Zurich’s advertorial profile describes a working studio, workshop and boutique, as well as involvement by Dreifuss’s wife and children. Because the profile is promotional and its location details may have changed, it is best read as a snapshot of the company’s character at the time, not a current visitor guide.

Who runs Maurice de Mauriac now?
Dreifuss handed operational leadership to his sons Massimo and Leonard in 2021. NZZ Bellevue reports that he stepped back from day-to-day operations that year; his wife Claudia and daughter Masha were also involved in the business. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry’s December 2020 report likewise describes the sons taking the reins.
The official Maurice de Mauriac homepage, accessed 8 October 2026, lists watches, straps, accessories and workshops, and says the atelier moved to Rämistrasse 5 in Zurich. That is the current address stated on the homepage; older addresses in profiles should not be treated as current. The homepage establishes that the brand remains active, but it does not by itself confirm the availability of a particular model, workshop date or accessory.
What did his sons create in tribute?
Massimo and Leonard’s first watch developed together was Grand Cœur, described by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry as a tribute to their father. Its launch report, published on 3 December 2020, specifies a 48-piece limited edition with a 45 mm DLC-treated titanium case, domed sapphire crystal, a rubber strap with red stitching, and a Concepto Manufacture Ref 3038 self-winding movement with a stated 48-hour power reserve.
Those details belong to that particular historical release; they should not be generalized to the brand’s other watches or taken as evidence that Grand Cœur is currently available. The tribute also made the family succession tangible: a new generation carried the business forward through a watch explicitly connected to Dreifuss.

What does “a genius of elegant solutions” mean here?
The phrase is a judgment, not a sourced accolade. The available accounts do not establish that Dreifuss received an award or was widely recognized by that exact description. It is more defensible as a reader’s interpretation of the choices visible in his work: building his own brand after a career change, treating customization and service as part of the watch experience, collaborating on a minimalist collection, and handing operational leadership to his sons while remaining closely associated with the company’s character.
His legacy is therefore both institutional and personal. Maurice de Mauriac continued as a family-run Zurich watch company, while Dreifuss’s way of talking about watches—objects worn close to the heart, with room for individual preference—helps explain why the brand’s story is about more than its catalogue.
