Whether a destro watch suits you depends on which wrist you wear it on, how the crown meets your hand as you move, and whether you can set it comfortably.
What does “destro” mean?
A destro watch places its crown on the left side of the case, usually at about 9 o’clock. The layout is often associated with left-handed wearers, but it is not exclusively for them: the right wrist, case shape and intended use all affect whether it makes sense.
Panerai traces the layout to requirements for naval divers in the 1950s. A diver could wear the watch on the right wrist while leaving the dominant hand free to operate instruments. The brand describes the purpose this way: “By positioning the crown protective bridge on the left side of the case, the watch could be worn on the right wrist, leaving the diver’s dominant hand free to operate essential instruments such as a compass or depth gauge.” This is Panerai’s account of the design’s intended use, not evidence of a universal comfort advantage. How crown position changes everyday use
Reaching the crown
The familiar arrangement puts the crown at 3 o’clock and pairs it with wearing the watch on the left wrist, where the right hand can reach it. Longines describes wearing a watch on the non-dominant wrist as the tradition, while Crown & Caliber discusses the same conventional crown-and-wrist pairing. If you wear a watch on your right wrist and use your left hand to adjust it, a crown on the left may be easier to reach. But access is personal: crown size, guards, case shape and the way you hold the watch can matter as much as its location. Try operating it rather than assuming the word “destro” guarantees an easier setting experience.
Contact with your hand or wrist
A crown can press against the back of the hand or wrist as you bend your wrist, particularly if the case is large or thick. Moving it to the other side may reduce that contact for some wearers. WatchTime describes left-side crowns as one way makers address pressure in certain wearing situations, but this is a possible benefit, not a guaranteed fit outcome. A left-side crown is not always a left-handed feature
Case design can determine crown and pusher placement independently of the wearer’s handedness. Hodinkee reports Oris North America CEO VJ Geronimo explaining that inward-facing pushers on a chunky case can help avoid discomfort when the watch is worn on the left wrist. That example illustrates why it is important to consider the whole layout, not just the crown’s side. Hodinkee’s overview of destro watches discusses this design rationale.
Moving the crown may also change where pushers, a date window or other indicators sit. Depending on the watch, that can affect access or how quickly you read the dial. A crown’s position is one part of the design, not a complete guide to usability.

How to tell whether a destro watch suits you
- Choose the wrist first. Try the watch on the wrist where you actually plan to wear it; comfort can differ between wrists.
- Move your wrist normally. Bend and rotate it as you would during the day, and notice whether the crown or case presses against your hand.
- Check setting access separately. Try operating the crown with your other hand. If practical, remove the watch to set it too; ease of setting while it is off your wrist is a separate question from comfort while wearing it.
- Look at the whole case. Crown guards or a recessed crown may already limit contact. Consider whether case size or thickness, rather than crown position, is causing pressure.
- Check the dial and controls. Make sure the crown, pushers and indicators are easy for you to use and read in their actual positions.
Panerai’s Luminor Destro PAM01732 is a current example of the layout; its official product page lists a 44 mm steel case. It illustrates the configuration, not a requirement or a tested recommendation for any particular wrist.
