The Devon Tread 1 tells time with moving belts instead of conventional hands. This hands-on account concerns one specific watch: the Version C examined in a 2015 review. Its belt display, crown-based setting, battery figures and strap observations should not be treated as universal specifications for every Tread 1 variant.
How does the Devon Tread 1 tell time?
On the Version C in the 2015 Life of a WIS hands-on review, the display uses moving belts to indicate hours and minutes. The reviewer describes four microstep motors moving fiberglass-reinforced nylon belts, with a microprocessor controlling the functions. Rather than reading the positions of hands on a dial, the wearer reads the belt display.
A seller’s description of the different Tread 1B also refers to belt movement and optical position control, but that does not establish that every version has identical components. No current official technical documentation was identified to confirm a family-wide mechanism specification.
How do you set the Tread 1?
For the reviewed Version C, the reviewer describes using the crown to select a setting mode and then turning it to move the hour or minute belts. A separate The 1916 Company video description is specifically about using and setting the Tread 1. The basic interaction is crown-based, but check the instructions for the exact version in hand; do not assume a used watch or another variant behaves identically.

How long does the battery last, and how is it charged?
The 2015 reviewer reports that the examined Version C has a rechargeable lithium-polymer cell, with up to two weeks of reserve in silent mode. The reviewer also describes inductive charging through the original box, which serves as the charging dock, and reports roughly eight hours to recharge a depleted cell. These are historical observations about one example, not independently verified current specifications or guarantees of performance for a particular used watch.
Before buying, ask whether the original charging box is included and whether the watch has been tested with it. Compatibility with generic wireless chargers and the current availability of a replacement dock have not been established.

What should buyers check before choosing a Tread 1?
- Exact version: Listings surfaced for the 1B, 1C/Version C and 1E. Ask the seller to identify the version and provide clear photographs or documentation; do not assume one listing’s measurements or materials apply to another.
- Case dimensions and materials: Tourneau’s Tread 1E listing gives dimensions of 48.45 mm by 53.44 mm and a thickness of 19 mm. Beverly Hills Watch Company’s Tread 1B listing gives a 53.3 mm diameter and 19 mm thickness, along with seller-described material and crystal details. These are version-specific seller specifications, not an authoritative specification sheet for the range.
- Strap fit: The Version C reviewer found its strap unusually wide and reported that standard aftermarket straps would not fit without substantial customization. Confirm the lug or strap interface and dimensions for the specific watch before ordering a replacement.
- Condition and service: Ask for a demonstration of the belts, setting operation and charging, and request any available service history. A display that does not move or a watch that will not charge needs assessment; the cited accounts do not establish current repair or parts availability.
- Included items: Confirm whether the original charging box and any manual are present. Their inclusion matters for ownership, especially because compatibility of substitute chargers has not been established.

No. The Tread 2 is a later successor, not another name for the Tread 1. WatchTime’s 2015 hands-on coverage describes the Tread 2 as adding a chronograph and revising design details. Those features should not be attributed to the Tread 1.
