Daniel Roth is a watchmaker whose career spans Audemars Piguet, Breguet, his own namesake brand and later independent work under the name Jean Daniel Nicolas. His signature double-ellipse case is a useful first clue for collectors, but a watch’s era, reference, condition and provenance matter more than its dial name alone.
The Daniel Roth brand was founded in 1988, acquired by Bulgari in 2000, and relaunched in 2023 with support from La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The modern Tourbillon Souscription reached its first clients in 2024, making it a new chapter rather than a continuation of the original Le Sentier atelier.
Why Daniel Roth matters to watch collectors
Roth’s career connects traditional watchmaking, Breguet’s modern development and independent authorship. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) says he spent seven years at Audemars Piguet before joining Breguet, where he contributed to the house’s modern development for fourteen years. Phillips also credits him with a major role in rebuilding Breguet’s prestige and developing its first perpetual-calendar wristwatch; those are source-attributed assessments, not claims that he alone shaped the entire brand.
His independent watches made the double-ellipse case a recognizable design signature. They also show how an independent watchmaker could use established movement bases while creating a distinctive result through design, complication work and execution.

Daniel Roth’s career and brand timeline
From Audemars Piguet to Breguet
The FHH career profile describes Roth’s early exposure to repair and traditional watchmaking methods, followed by seven years at Audemars Piguet. He then joined Breguet under the Chaumet brothers and spent fourteen years contributing to its modern development. Phillips credits Roth with a central role in the house’s revival and its first modern perpetual-calendar wristwatch.
Founding the independent brand
The official Daniel Roth history and LVMH identify 1988 as the namesake brand’s founding year. Its earliest project centered on Roth’s preferred complication, the tourbillon, in a double-ellipse case. The official history describes an Asprey of London souscription order of 25 pieces, with date and power-reserve displays on the case back.
The 25-piece figure describes that original Asprey order; it is not a total for all early tourbillons. The official historical catalogue documents later versions, including guilloché and skeletonized models and different case materials.
Ownership changes and Jean Daniel Nicolas
Phillips reports that Roth sold a majority stake in 1994. The FHH timeline records Bulgari’s acquisition of Daniel Roth in 2000. A watch carrying the Daniel Roth name from a later corporate period should therefore not automatically be treated as a product of Roth’s original independent atelier.

After leaving the company, Roth returned to independent work in 2001 under the name Jean Daniel Nicolas. The FHH explains that the name combines Daniel Roth, his son, and his wife. It records the first two-minute tourbillon under that name in 2005.

The revival
LVMH and the FHH identify 2023 as the revival or relaunch year, with support from La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The FHH records delivery of the Tourbillon Souscription to first clients in 2024.
LVMH describes the modern Tourbillon Souscription as a limited series of 20 pieces, with an in-house-crafted DR001 movement developed by master watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini. This modern edition is distinct from the original Asprey order of 25 pieces.
How to recognize a Daniel Roth watch
The double-ellipse case
The double-ellipse case is the most useful first identifier. The official brand history says Roth chose the form for the first tourbillon and that it became the brand’s signature. LVMH describes the modern case as blending square and circular forms. “Ellipsocurvex” is a later collecting term sometimes used for this case shape.

Historical Daniel Roth models vary in dial treatment, complication and movement base. The official catalogue documents guilloché and skeletonized versions, among other designs. Compare a specific watch’s dial, case, movement and reference with reliable material for that model; broad stylistic resemblance alone does not establish originality or authenticity.
Some documented models use movement bases from established makers. For example, the official historical catalogue identifies a Lemania 2320 base for the dual-pusher chronograph reference 2147/C147 and a Venus 179 base for an early-1990s split-seconds chronograph. A supplied base is not, by itself, evidence that a watch is inauthentic; the specific model and its documented construction are what matter.

Important Daniel Roth model families
The official historical-model catalogue is a useful reference for selected models and specifications, but it does not establish complete serial ranges or every variant. The examples below are not a complete catalogue.

How collectors should compare Daniel Roth watches
- Establish the period and provenance. Distinguish original Daniel Roth-era models, later production under the corporate brand, Jean Daniel Nicolas watches and the modern revival. Confirm the individual watch’s documentation rather than relying on the dial name.
- Identify the reference and complication. Tourbillons, chronographs, split-seconds, ultra-thin, retrograde, perpetual-calendar and Papillon models differ in construction and service needs. Check the claimed reference against the official historical catalogue.
- Compare case and dial execution. Assess the double-ellipse proportions, case material, guilloché or skeletonization and the originality of components against reliable reference material.
- Review condition and service history. Ask the brand or a qualified watchmaker about a specific watch. The reviewed sources do not provide service prices, turnaround times or a general service interval.
- Use market evidence cautiously. Auction coverage can help identify examples and offer historical context, but past results are not present-day valuations. Seek recent, comparable transactions before making a pricing decision.
What the revival changed
The revived Daniel Roth brand continues the double-ellipse design language but represents a different production context from the original independent atelier. LVMH describes the modern Tourbillon Souscription as the revival’s starting point, with a solid-gold Clou de Paris guilloché dial and the DR001 movement. The FHH’s 2024 first-client delivery date marks a separate milestone from the 2023 relaunch.
