Seiko should bring back the 11A Indicator—not as a literal museum replica, but as a restrained modern dress watch built around the feature that made the original distinctive: a hand showing the remaining power reserve on a fan-shaped scale beneath 12 o’clock. That is a collector’s wish, not an announced Seiko reissue.
Why the 11A Indicator deserves another look
In his 2022 advocacy piece, Tomas Rosputinsky describes the 11A Indicator as one of Seiko’s earliest automatic wristwatches. Its appeal is unusually easy to read at a glance: the power-reserve hand and fan-shaped scale occupy a prominent position on the dial instead of hiding the information in a small window or treating it as an afterthought. Fratello’s article is the source for this historical framing; it is not an official Seiko history record.
Rosputinsky’s case is not simply that an old watch should be copied. The indicator gives the dial a clear focal point, while the dress-watch styling keeps it from feeling like a technical instrument. He writes, “I genuinely believe it could be a pleasant surprise that finds its audience.” That is a persuasive design argument, though it is an opinion rather than evidence of market demand.
What the original looks like—and which version stands out
The Fratello article lists several related references: 14009, 14015, 14040, 14043 and 14060. Rosputinsky favors the later steel 14060, preferring its more restrained “Seiko Automatic” script and simple arched scale to earlier versions with a taller “S” signature. He also likes the hidden crown, which leaves the case profile visually clean. These are the author’s preferences, not a claim that one reference is objectively best.

Published dimensions vary by source and by the specific watch described. Fratello reports a 35 mm diameter for the 11A family and says the later 14060 grew to 36 mm. A DC Vintage Watches listing for a 1959 Seiko 14060 A1 gives a seller-reported 36.5 mm case measurement and 18 mm lug width. Fratello also reports an 18 mm lug width for the 14060. These figures should be read as source-specific measurements, not as one definitive specification for every example.
The same dealer listing describes its watch as having a 21-jewel movement. That is a seller-reported specification for the listed example, not a verified universal figure for every 14060.

Movement history needs a careful qualifier
Rosputinsky characterizes the 11A as essentially an A. Schild 1382 with minor changes, and calls Seiko’s later Gyro Marvel its first “honest” in-house automatic. That wording reflects the author’s account of the movement lineage, not a settled official Seiko statement. A 2025 Horlogeforum discussion offers collector-level corroboration, but it is not authoritative documentation.
What a worthy modern successor could preserve
A new model would not need to reproduce every vintage detail. The most convincing revival would keep the original’s visual idea intact while making deliberate choices for contemporary wear:

- Keep the indicator central. A hand on a clearly legible fan-shaped scale is the design’s signature; reducing it to a token mark would lose the point.
- Favor a restrained dial. Rosputinsky’s preference for the later “Seiko Automatic” script and simple arch is a useful guide to preserving clarity rather than adding decoration.
- Choose proportions for a modern dress watch. The historical accounts place the family around 35–36 mm, while one dealer’s 14060 listing measures 36.5 mm. Those are reference points, not a proven ideal size for a successor.
- Balance fidelity with legibility. The original’s dress styling and prominent reserve display should remain in conversation; adding features or visual bulk that compete with the indicator would weaken the concept.
Those are design criteria, not specifications for a product Seiko has said it is developing. The cited coverage does not establish that a successor is in the works.

No reissue announcement appears in the material cited here. “Bring back” is Rosputinsky’s appeal to Seiko, not news of a launch, confirmed project, or retail listing. Whether the company ever revisits the idea remains unknown.
