Dear Seiko: Bring Back the Spring Drive Spacewalk

Seiko’s Spring Drive Spacewalk was designed for extravehicular activity and, according to Seiko, used during an ISS spacewalk. It deserves a thoughtful modern revival.

Seiko should revive the Spring Drive Spacewalk—not as another watch with a space-themed name, but as a modern continuation of a model Seiko says was built for extravehicular activity and used during an International Space Station spacewalk. The original paired a battery-free Spring Drive movement with a tightly sealed case to address specific challenges of working in space. That is a story worth bringing back.

What was the Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk?

Introduced at Baselworld in 2008, the Spring Drive Spacewalk was designed for spacewalks and other extravehicular activities. Seiko’s museum describes it as “A spring-driven watch made for spacewalks and other extravehicular activities in space.” The museum says an astronaut used one during an ISS spacewalk. Seiko Museum Ginza’s collection record and Seiko Design’s history of the 2010 Spacewalk preserve the model’s purpose and context.

Seiko’s corporate account says Richard Garriott requested a watch for his October 2008 ISS mission, and that he wore it on the 12-day mission. The company gives the mission environment’s temperature range as −20 °C to +70 °C. That is Seiko’s description of the environment, not a published certification rating for the watch. Its account says a battery-powered movement was ruled out on safety grounds, while conventional mechanical timekeeping was considered unsuitable for maintaining accuracy across those temperature swings. Seiko’s Spring Drive page explains its reasoning.

Why Spring Drive made sense for the mission

Battery-free operation

The Spacewalk used Seiko’s 5R86 Spring Drive calibre. Seiko Museum says it was self-winding and battery-free, and that it functioned in zero gravity. The rationale was practical: Seiko says avoiding a battery addressed concerns about damage from temperature changes and radiation. These are the manufacturer’s historical claims; the cited accounts are not independent test reports. Seiko Museum’s Spring Drive milestone history describes the movement and its stated mission performance.

Sealing against the vacuum

Seiko also points to the case’s airtightness. In near-vacuum conditions, the company says, sealing helps prevent lubricating oil from vaporizing and escaping from the watch. The Spacewalk’s engineering story therefore goes beyond a space-ready dial or rugged case: its movement and enclosure were presented as responses to the environment it was meant to enter.

A crown shaped by the mission

The mission watch had a non-screw-in crown. Seiko’s September 2009 announcement of a commemorative edition explained that engineers were concerned about manual winding in zero gravity. After the watch’s operation in space, Seiko adopted a screw-in crown for the commemorative model to add case security. The announcement cited a 5.5-hour EVA. It planned 100 commemorative pieces for early 2010, with the mission watch’s specification apart from that crown adaptation. The contemporaneous Seiko press release records those details.

Why Seiko should bring it back

The case for a revival is the specificity of the original. Space-inspired watches are easy to imagine; a Seiko model with a documented link to an EVA and a design rationale built around battery-free operation and case sealing is much harder to replicate. Seiko’s heritage page says the watch performed inside and outside the ISS and received the Sports Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Seiko’s heritage account adds that recognition to the model’s history.

A new version could retain that functional identity while making the watch more compelling to wear and easier to understand today. My design brief would keep Spring Drive central, explain the movement’s role in the watch’s intended use, and make legibility and the chronograph useful rather than merely decorative. I would also revisit case proportions and materials for everyday wear, while treating the crown and sealing as engineering choices to be explained—not styling cues to copy blindly. These are recommendations, not specifications Seiko has announced.

What a modern Spacewalk should—and should not—claim

A revival should distinguish between a watch inspired by space and a watch built and qualified for a defined mission. If Seiko intended a new model for EVA use, its claims would need to identify the relevant testing, operating conditions and mission context. If it were instead a contemporary tribute for collectors, Seiko could still make a strong watch, but should describe its spaceflight connection as historical rather than imply new operational approval.

The original’s history is compelling without stretching it: Seiko says it was used on an ISS spacewalk, and its museum records its 5R86 movement and stated design rationale. The sources cited here do not establish an independent technical certification or independent mission test report. Clear attribution would make a revival more credible, not less.

Will Seiko bring back the Spacewalk?

No current revival plan is established by the official Seiko sources cited here. The return is a recommendation, not an announced product. Until Seiko says otherwise, there is no confirmed modern specification, production quantity, retail price or availability to report. The documented model is a historical watch, not evidence that a new Spacewalk is on sale.
