Dear Omega, Bring Back the Seamaster GMT “Great White” 2538.20.00

The discontinued Seamaster GMT “Great White” 2538.20.00 paired a white wave dial and red GMT accents with 300 m water resistance. Its comeback is a collector’s wish, not an Omega announcement.

Will Omega bring back the Seamaster GMT “Great White” 2538.20.00? There is no reissue announcement in the available official record: Omega’s U.S. product page says this reference is “no longer available.” That makes a revival a collector’s wish, not a confirmed plan. Still, the original makes a persuasive case for returning: it pairs a distinctive white wave dial and red GMT details with a capable, 300-metre Seamaster specification.

What made the 2538.20.00 the “Great White”?

The nickname comes from the look, not a separate model designation. The white wave dial gives the watch a crisp identity, while red details make the GMT function easy to pick out. Fratello’s description highlights the sword hands, oversized luminous marker at 12, red “GMT” dial text, red-tipped seconds hand and red spear-like GMT hand, set against a metallic 24-hour bezel. Fratello’s May 1, 2022 article presents those design cues as the heart of its appeal.

Omega’s official U.S. record identifies the watch as the Seamaster 41 mm, steel on steel, reference 2538.20.00. It lists a white dial, a bi-directional rotating bezel and an additional hour hand that completes one rotation every 24 hours to show a second time zone. Omega’s product record supplies the technical specifications.

What are the original specifications?

Specification Omega’s published details
Reference and case 2538.20.00; 41 mm steel case
Dial and crystal White dial; domed, anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
Movement Omega 1128 self-winding caliber; 44-hour power reserve
Functions Chronometer, date and GMT; the GMT hand makes one rotation in 24 hours
Bezel and water resistance Bi-directional rotating bezel; 30 bar / 300 metres / 1,000 feet
Bracelet and clasp Steel bracelet; foldover clasp with diver extension

Fratello notes that the Great White lacks a helium escape valve despite its 300 m rating, and contrasts its styling with the Seamaster 2254. That absence is part of the case’s design character; the official product page confirms the water-resistance rating but does not list a helium escape valve.

Why is a revival worth asking for?

The Great White occupies an appealing middle ground: familiar Seamaster cues, a real second-time-zone hand, and a white-dial identity that stands apart from the more conventional dark-dial look. Its 41 mm steel case also gives it a clear, restrained presence compared with the larger or more overtly technical feel of some contemporary sports watches.

Fratello author Nacho Conde Garzón made the case plainly in 2022: “The Omega Seamaster GMT ‘Great White’ 2538.20.00 is a watch that I’d love to see come back in the not-too-distant future.” That is his personal view, not an Omega statement. He also floated a possible modern reinterpretation that would retain a dive bezel and put a 24-hour scale on the rehaut. It is one design suggestion, not a known Omega plan.

How does it compare visually with the black-dial version?

Fratello frames the choice against the black-dial 50th-anniversary version as a matter of dial color and visual character. The white Great White reads brighter and more distinctive; the black-dial version takes a more traditional, low-key direction. The cited comparison does not establish technical differences between the two, so the safest distinction is aesthetic rather than mechanical.

Can you buy a 2538.20.00 new, and is Omega bringing it back?

Omega’s U.S. product page states that the 2538.20.00 is “no longer available.” Fratello says the model was discontinued sometime in the early 2000s. Neither source announces a reissue, and no Omega spokesperson’s comment on a return is reported in the cited material. The title is therefore a plea for a comeback—not news that one is scheduled.

Fratello’s May 1, 2022 article mentioned examples around the low €3,000 range on Chrono24 at that time, compared with historical prices below €2,000. Those were dated, anecdotal observations, not a current market survey, appraisal or present-day asking price. They should not be used to estimate what a particular watch costs now.
