Samsung does not publish the complete formula behind its Sleep Score. The score is a proprietary summary of a sleep session estimated by a compatible Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring. Samsung reports measurements such as sleep duration, estimated sleep stages, movement, heart rate and breathing, but does not disclose their exact weights or thresholds.
Use it to follow your own sleep patterns over time—not as a clinical measurement, diagnosis or direct comparison with someone else’s score.
What Samsung Sleep Score measures
Sleep Score is a consumer-facing summary of a recorded sleep session in Samsung Health. It draws on estimates of when you slept, how long you slept and how your sleep was structured. Samsung’s support materials list the score alongside sleep time, sleep stages, blood oxygen, snore detection and sleep consistency, though available details vary by device and software version. Samsung’s sleep-monitoring guide describes these report elements; its Samsung Health overview describes sleep tracking as part of broader rest and recovery reporting.
Samsung’s developer documentation exposes a sleep-score field, but not the equation that produces it. A sleep record can include duration, a score and one or more sessions, with stages labeled Awake, REM, Light and Deep. These are device classifications, not direct observations of brain activity. The SleepType API reference identifies the score field; Samsung’s sleep-data documentation describes the record and sessions.

Which signals may inform the score
Samsung documents sleep measurements and reporting features, but does not say exactly which signals contribute to the score in every device, region or software version. The following table separates reported information from what can reasonably be inferred; the “possible relevance” column is not an official weighting model.
| Measurement | What Samsung reports | Possible relevance to the session summary |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep duration and timing | Estimated sleep time and the start and end of the session. | Can show whether the night was short or shifted from the user’s usual schedule. |
| Sleep stages and awake periods | Estimated Awake, REM, Light and Deep intervals; records may contain multiple sessions. | May describe the apparent structure and interruptions of the night. |
| Movement | Movement is included in Samsung’s sleep reporting. | May help distinguish stillness from activity, but quiet wakefulness can be misclassified. |
| Heart rate and breathing | Samsung Health lists heart rate and breathing among sleep-related measurements. | May provide physiological context for the sleep-session interpretation. |
| Blood oxygen and skin temperature | Reported on supported devices and configurations; the Galaxy Ring support page describes these measurements. | Additional context where available; Samsung does not publish a universal score weight for either. |
| Snoring and consistency | Snore detection and sleep consistency are documented features, subject to setup and compatibility. | Can add context to a sleep report or goal tracking; their exact role in the score is not published. |

What may raise or lower a score—and what remains unknown
A short estimated night, apparent awakenings, irregular timing or incomplete sensor data are plausible reasons for a less favorable summary. A longer, more continuous session with complete readings may look different in Samsung’s scoring. Those are interpretations of the documented measurements, not a disclosed formula.
Samsung does not publish the factor weights, cutoffs, normalization method or exact algorithm in the cited documentation. It has not established there that duration is the largest factor, that Deep sleep determines the score, or that every score uses blood oxygen or a demographic adjustment. Do not treat online claims about a fixed percentage formula or universal “good” threshold as Samsung’s official method.

How sleep stages are estimated
A Galaxy wearable does not measure brain waves like an EEG-based clinical sleep study. It classifies likely sleep and wake intervals using signals available from the device, such as movement and cardiovascular measurements, with additional signals on some models. “REM” or “Deep” in Samsung Health therefore means the algorithm classified that period as likely to be that stage; it is not a direct laboratory measurement.
This distinction matters when interpreting a graph. Quiet wakefulness may look like sleep, while movement during sleep may be read as waking. A stage graph can help you notice personal patterns across nights, but it is not a laboratory-grade hypnogram.

Sleep Score is not Sleep Coaching, Energy Score or Sleep Apnea
| Feature | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Sleep Score | A summary associated with a recorded sleep session. |
| Sleep Coaching and Sleep Type | Personalized guidance or categorization based on multiple days of sleep data, not another name for the nightly score. |
| Bedtime Guidance | A separate feature Samsung says uses three days of sleep analysis involving circadian rhythm and sleep pressure. |
| Energy Score | A separate daily-readiness-style metric based on prior sleep and activity data. |
| Sleep Apnea feature | A distinct feature with its own eligibility, compatibility, geographic and regulatory conditions—not part of the ordinary Sleep Score. |
Samsung says Sleep Coaching generally needs at least seven days of sleep data with workday and day-off coverage. The precise wording varies across Samsung pages and app versions, so follow the requirement displayed in your app. Samsung’s U.S. health page lists Samsung Health version 6.24 or later for certain Sleep Coaching documentation; that should not be read as a version requirement for every sleep feature. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 page describes Bedtime Guidance, while Samsung Health covers its health features.

A high score when you still feel tired
The score cannot establish that you are well-rested. It may reflect the signals the wearable captured while missing factors such as accumulated sleep debt, illness or how you feel during the day. Treat your experience and recurring symptoms as important context rather than letting one number overrule them.

A low score after a long night
Time in bed is not necessarily time asleep. Apparent awakenings, irregular timing, incomplete readings or poor sensor contact can all affect what the app records. Check the session details and recording conditions before concluding that the night was poor.
A changed result after wearing a Watch and Ring
Samsung says Samsung Health can combine Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring records into an integrated sleep session. Combining readings does not establish that the result is clinically validated or necessarily more accurate, and Samsung’s public documentation does not fully specify how conflicting signals are resolved. Samsung’s sleep-data documentation describes the integrated-session capability.
Why a score can look wrong
- Fit or position: A loose wearable or poor sensor contact can affect readings. Wear it securely and follow the device’s fit guidance.
- Battery ran out: A device that powers down cannot record the rest of the night. Charge it before bed if needed.
- Phone-dependent snore detection: On supported Watch setups, the connected phone needs to be near your head, and snore detection must be enabled in Samsung Health. Check the relevant Samsung support instructions.
- Optional feature was off: Blood oxygen, skin temperature or snoring may depend on device support and separate settings; absence of a reading does not mean the same thing as a normal reading.
- Sync is incomplete: The wearable may have recorded data that has not yet appeared in Samsung Health. Allow it to sync and review the report again.
- Split or edited sleep: Extended awakenings can result in multiple sessions. Manually added or edited records may not be scored like automatically detected sessions, and behavior can vary by app version.
- Night was unusual: Travel, illness, alcohol, medication or an irregular schedule can alter both sleep and the signals used to classify it.
- Device was off for charging: Removing a wearable overnight leaves a gap in the record.
Make your readings more dependable
- Wear the Watch or Ring throughout the night, with a secure, comfortable fit.
- Make sure the battery will last until morning.
- If using phone-dependent snore detection, enable it as directed and place the connected phone near your head.
- Keep the wearable and phone connected, then open Samsung Health after waking and allow synchronization to finish.
- Review the session, stage estimates and missing-data indicators instead of relying only on the score.
- Compare several nights recorded with the same device and routine; a personal trend is more informative than a one-night result or another person’s score.
Where to find the score
- Open Samsung Health on the connected phone.
- Tap the Sleep tile or sleep-score card to open the report. Labels may differ by app version and device.
- On a compatible Galaxy Watch, open the Sleep tile and choose Show on phone for the full report, if that option is available.
Samsung shows this phone-report route in its Galaxy Watch8 materials and describes watch access in its sleep-monitoring support guide.
When a wearable score is not enough
Samsung describes its ordinary sleep features as general wellness tools, not as a way to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. A score cannot diagnose insomnia, establish sleep apnea, determine exact stage timing or prove that a low or high result reflects your health. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 health-feature disclaimer makes this limitation clear.
Sleep Apnea is a separate software medical feature with its own instructions and availability. It should not be confused with the routine Sleep Score; see the U.S. Sleep Apnea Instructions for Use for its scope and conditions. If you have loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, severe daytime sleepiness or persistent unexplained insomnia, discuss the symptoms with a clinician rather than relying on a wearable score.
