Yes. Compatible Samsung Galaxy Watches can make and answer voice calls. A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model usually relies on its paired phone, while an LTE model can call without the phone nearby after you activate a compatible carrier plan. Current Wear OS Galaxy Watch models require an Android phone for setup; they do not pair with iPhone.
What determines whether a Samsung watch can call?
“Samsung Watch” covers several generations and connectivity versions. A watch’s calling options depend on its exact model, whether it has LTE, its paired phone, and—when using Wi-Fi or cellular service—carrier and regional support. The same model name may be sold as Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE versions, so check the listing for “LTE,” “4G LTE” or “cellular” if you want phone-free mobile calling.
Samsung documents calling on supported Wear OS watches through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and on LTE models with active network service. Its supported LTE Wear OS lineup includes models such as Galaxy Watch Ultra, Watch7, Watch6 and Watch6 Classic, though compatibility varies. Samsung’s calling compatibility guidance and LTE model guidance are useful checks for a specific watch.
The built-in Phone app is for voice calls. Do not assume that ordinary calling means the watch can make video calls: video depends on the app, phone and platform, and is not a standard built-in Galaxy Watch calling feature.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LTE compared
| Connection | Can it call? | What it depends on | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Yes | A compatible paired phone nearby, connected to the watch and able to place the call | Phone-nearby use without a wearable cellular plan |
| Wi-Fi remote connection | Often, on supported models and setups | Wi-Fi access, remote connection/calling configuration, and compatible phone and carrier support | Some calls when the phone is away but the watch has Wi-Fi |
| LTE | Yes, away from the phone | An LTE watch, activated wearable plan, supported carrier and network coverage | Calling when you leave the phone behind |
| No phone, Wi-Fi or LTE connection | No ordinary phone calls | A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi watch has no independent cellular service in this situation | Not a calling setup |
Wi-Fi remote calling is not the same as having a cellular watch. Samsung documents the feature for Galaxy Watch Active2, Watch3 and Wear OS smartwatch models when Bluetooth is disconnected, but availability depends on the model and configuration. Samsung’s Wi-Fi calling instructions describe the supported setup.
Can it call without your phone nearby?
When the watch is connected by Bluetooth
Yes, the watch can act as the phone’s calling interface while the paired phone is nearby and connected. The phone provides the call service; the watch is not making an independent cellular call.
When the watch has Wi-Fi
Some supported watches can use a remote connection to handle calls even after the Bluetooth link is lost. The watch and phone need the relevant setup and network access, and carrier or account settings may affect whether calls route. Wi-Fi alone does not turn every Bluetooth model into a standalone phone.
When the watch has LTE
An LTE Galaxy Watch can make and receive calls away from the phone after mobile service is activated, provided the carrier supports the model and the watch has coverage. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 LTE product information, for example, describes calls, messages, music streaming and notifications without the phone nearby. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 information.

If your phone battery dies
A Bluetooth watch will generally lose ordinary calling when its phone—the device placing the call—powers off. Supported Wi-Fi remote calling may still work if the watch can reach the phone and account through the configured service. An LTE watch may continue to call if its plan is active and it has coverage.
How to make a call from the watch
- Wake the watch and open the Phone app.
- Choose Keypad, Contacts or Recent calls, depending on the options shown.
- Select a contact or enter a number, then tap the call button.
- Speak using the watch’s microphone and speaker, or use connected Bluetooth earbuds if the call audio is routed to them.
Samsung’s instructions for current Galaxy Watch models also start with the Phone app. Labels and screen layouts can differ by generation, software version, language and carrier configuration. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch calling steps.
How to answer an incoming call
On a supported setup, an incoming call can appear on the watch, where you can answer or reject it. You can speak through the watch or, when connected and selected for call audio, use Bluetooth earbuds. Depending on the configuration, you may also be able to move the call to the phone or another audio device. A Bluetooth watch depends on its connected phone; an LTE watch with active service can receive calls away from it, subject to carrier support and coverage.
Samsung lists incoming-call alerts, accepting or rejecting calls and outgoing calls among the functions compatible with Samsung and other Android phones, subject to model and compatibility limitations. Check Samsung’s phone compatibility details.

What you need for Bluetooth calling
- A compatible Android phone paired through the Galaxy Wearable app.
- A working Bluetooth connection and the phone within range.
- Phone-call permissions and, when needed, access to contacts.
- Cellular service on the phone or another call-capable connection.
Samsung says current Wear OS Galaxy Watches support calling through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, while LTE calling requires active network service. Phone compatibility and individual features can vary. Review Samsung’s current compatibility guidance.
What you need for LTE calling
- Choose the LTE version. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi version does not gain cellular capability through an app or plan.
- Check model and carrier compatibility. Confirm that the exact watch variant is supported where you live and on your phone’s carrier. Imported, used or refurbished watches deserve particular scrutiny.
- Confirm the wearable plan and account eligibility. Samsung’s U.S. activation guidance names AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon; carrier support and plan terms can change. See Samsung’s U.S. LTE activation guidance.
- Activate through Galaxy Wearable. Follow the carrier activation flow and ensure the watch has a network connection during setup. LTE models use an embedded SIM (eSIM); there is no standard physical SIM card to insert.
- Check service and test independently. Confirm that the watch shows mobile network service, then try a call with the phone powered off or out of range.
Activation can fail if the carrier does not recognize the watch’s EID, IMEI or ICCID, the account is ineligible, or the model is not supported. Samsung says carrier help may be needed if activation fails or a repaired watch no longer connects to the network. Samsung’s LTE activation troubleshooting page.
Does LTE use your phone’s number?
Number sharing is carrier-dependent. Many wearable plans are designed to make the watch share the phone’s number, but carrier systems may show a separate wearable line internally. Ask the carrier how its number-sharing, number-sync or equivalent service works, including what number recipients see.
Emergency calls need separate verification
Do not treat a Galaxy Watch as a guaranteed replacement for a phone in an emergency. Emergency-calling behavior can depend on the exact watch, carrier, location, signal and regional rules. If emergency access is a key reason for buying—particularly for a child, older adult or medical-safety use—confirm the precise service directly with Samsung and the carrier.

Does a Galaxy Watch work with iPhone?
Current Wear OS Galaxy Watch generations—including Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch FE and Watch Ultra—do not pair with iPhone. Samsung says these watches rely on Google Play services, which iOS does not support. Older Samsung watches had limited iPhone compatibility, but that history does not apply to current models. For an iPhone owner who wants wrist-based calling, Apple Watch is generally the more appropriate choice. Samsung’s compatibility page.
Can it call with a non-Samsung Android phone?
Often, yes: basic calling functions can work with Samsung and other compatible Android phones. That does not guarantee full feature parity. Some health features, gestures, integrations or regional services may require a Samsung phone or Samsung apps. Check compatibility for your particular phone and watch rather than assuming every Android device supports every function. Samsung lists calling compatibility and limitations.

Start with the question: will you call while the phone is completely absent, or mostly while it is nearby?
| Choice | Consider it if… | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Galaxy Watch | Your phone is usually nearby, you want to avoid a wearable line, or Wi-Fi remote calling covers occasional gaps | Ordinary calling is not independent when the phone and Wi-Fi are unavailable |
| Galaxy Watch7 LTE | You want LTE calling at a lower listed price than newer LTE options | Still requires a supported carrier plan; verify the exact model and current price |
| Galaxy Watch8 LTE | You want a newer standard Galaxy Watch with phone-free calling | Higher device and recurring service costs than a phone-connected setup |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic LTE or Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE | The design or specialized features matter in addition to LTE calls | The premium does not inherently improve call capability |
Samsung’s U.S. MSRP document dated June 2026 listed these signals: Watch7 Bluetooth 40 mm at $249.99 and LTE 40 mm at $299.99; Watch8 Bluetooth 40 mm at $349.99 and 44 mm at $379.99, and LTE 40 mm at $399.99 and 44 mm at $429.99; Watch8 Classic LTE at $549.99; and Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE at $649.99. For U.S. LTE activation, Samsung’s guidance references AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Check the exact device, account eligibility, monthly price, taxes, fees, number-sharing rules and promotions with your carrier before buying: AT&T wearables, T-Mobile smartwatches and Verizon connected devices. LTE use can also consume more battery than Bluetooth use, and speakerphone conversations may be audible to people nearby.
Troubleshooting: why can’t my Galaxy Watch make calls?
The Phone app is missing
- Open Galaxy Wearable and confirm the watch is fully paired.
- Update the watch, phone, Galaxy Wearable app and relevant Samsung plug-ins.
- Review phone, contacts, Bluetooth and notification permissions.
- Restart both devices. If you re-pair, back up relevant watch settings first.
- Check that your watch variant supports the calling setup you expect; independent cellular calls require LTE hardware.
Calls work only when the phone is nearby
The watch may be a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model, LTE service may not be activated, the plan may be inactive or unsupported, or remote calling may not be enabled. Also check that the watch has Wi-Fi or cellular coverage for the connection you intend to use.
LTE activation fails
- Verify the exact watch model and regional variant with the carrier.
- Confirm the phone and watch carrier combination and account eligibility.
- Ask whether the carrier recognizes the watch’s EID, IMEI or ICCID.
- Keep Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity available during activation and check that mobile service is enabled on the watch.
- Contact the carrier if its activation flow cannot provision service or a repaired watch will not reconnect.
There is no sound from the watch
- Check volume and mute settings, and whether Do Not Disturb or Theater mode is on.
- See whether Bluetooth earbuds are connected and receiving call audio.
- Confirm the intended call-audio device and that the Phone app has the required permissions.
Wi-Fi calling or incoming-call alerts fail
Confirm that the watch is on a known Wi-Fi network, the phone is online and reachable through the configured remote connection, and the feature is enabled. Carrier support and model or regional limits can matter. For missing incoming alerts, also check notification settings on both devices and verify that the watch remains connected as expected.
