Those are different things. In watches, the choice depends on the look a maker wants and how the stone fits the dial, bezel, or another component; the setting and its execution matter just as much as the cut name.
What does “diamond cut” mean?
The term has three distinct meanings. Keeping them separate makes descriptions of gem-set watches easier to understand and compare.
- Shape or outline: the face-up perimeter, such as round, oval, pear, marquise, or emerald outline. “Emerald” can describe an outline or, in some contexts, a step-style facet arrangement, so the intended meaning should be clear.
- Cutting style: the arrangement of facets. The broad families include brilliant, step, mixed, and rose styles. They are families, not a complete list of every commercial or modified cut; fancy shapes can use different facet arrangements. GIA’s overview of gem cutting styles explains these distinctions.
- Cut grade: an assessment of quality, not another name for a shape. GIA’s standardized diamond cut-grading system applies to standard round brilliant diamonds; it does not assign the same cut grade to every fancy shape. GIA’s diamond cut guide describes the scope of that system.
What are the main diamond cutting styles?
Brilliant
Brilliant-style facets are arranged to create bright return, fire, and scintillation. The familiar round brilliant is the best-known example. It is a natural choice when a watch designer wants a lively, sparkling effect, and brands document brilliant-cut diamonds in gem-set watch designs. The style alone cannot guarantee a particular appearance: proportions and workmanship also affect how a diamond looks.
Step
Step cuts have rows of largely four-sided facets that run around the stone. The emerald cut is a familiar example; baguette stones are another rectilinear form often associated with step-style faceting. Their geometry can suit aligned rows or the lines of a bezel. Rolex documents baguette and trapeze stones in settings including bezels.

Mixed
Mixed cuts combine brilliant and step facet arrangements. The term describes a facet pattern, not a single outline or a specific watch component. GIA notes that oval and cushion shapes are often cut with step pavilions and brilliant crowns in colored gems; that example should not be read as a rule about diamonds or watches.
Rose
A rose cut has a flat base and a domed crown, with at least three facets converging toward an apex. GIA traces the style’s origins to diamond cutting in the 1500s. It is useful to recognize as a historical and decorative style, but the cited watchmaker examples do not establish it as a common contemporary watch choice.

What makes a round brilliant different?
A standard round brilliant has 57 or 58 facets, according to GIA; the optional 58th is a small, flat culet facet at the bottom of the pavilion. The large flat facet at the top is the table. These figures refer specifically to the standard round brilliant, not to diamonds of every shape.
GIA evaluates standard round brilliant cut quality through seven components: brightness, fire, scintillation, weight ratio, durability, polish, and symmetry. Brightness is reflected white light; fire is the dispersion of light into spectral colors; scintillation is the sparkle and pattern of light and dark as the diamond moves. The other factors address design and finish. Together, they explain why a facet-style label by itself cannot promise a particular look. GIA’s explanation of diamond cut quality sets out these components.

Where do watchmakers use different cuts?
Dials
Rolex lists a platinum Day-Date 40 with a diamond-paved dial and baguette-cut diamonds. It also describes a silver dial set with ten baguette-cut diamonds. These are specific brand examples, not evidence that baguettes dominate watch dials generally. Rolex’s Day-Date 40 product page shows one documented configuration.
Bezels, lugs, and clasps
Rectilinear stones such as baguettes and trapeze cuts can be arranged to follow a setting’s geometry. Rolex describes a channel, or “baguette,” setting as commonly accommodating baguette- or trapeze-cut stones aligned side by side. Its gem-setting material also names brilliant or full cut, 8/8, baguette, trapeze, asymmetric, and triangular stones. These examples show a range of forms in one maker’s work; they are not a universal list or a fixed assignment of each form to one watch part. Rolex’s precious stones and gem-setting overview discusses its stones and settings.

Setting craft can also be component-specific. Patek Philippe describes baguette-cut rubies on a bezel, lugs, and folding clasp. That example illustrates how a maker considers the gem and the watch element together; it is evidence about ruby setting, not about where diamonds are typically used. Patek Philippe’s guide to gemsetting explains its approach.
Gem-set compositions
Audemars Piguet documents brilliant-cut diamonds in watch designs and describes techniques including snow setting and claw setting. A brilliant cut may create an energetic sparkle, while the setting determines how the stones are held and arranged. Audemars Piguet’s overview of jewellery and gemsetting describes these techniques.

How should you compare diamond-set watches?
Do not rank a watch by cut name alone. Compare the stone, its placement, its setting, and the quality of the execution as a whole.
- Look at outline and faceting separately. A round brilliant and a baguette differ both in perimeter and typical facet arrangement; “brilliant” and “step” describe facet styles, while “round” and “baguette” identify forms.
- Note where the stones sit. A dial, bezel, lugs, case, bracelet, or clasp imposes different design constraints. Brand examples establish possible placements, not a universal map of which cut belongs on which component.
- Identify the setting method. Channel, bezel, prong or claw, grain, and snow setting describe ways of securing or arranging stones; they are not cut names. Which method is used affects the visual result and how the stones fit the watch.
- Inspect the setting and finish. Rolex identifies alignment, stone height, orientation, position, setting regularity and strength, proportions, and finished metalwork as criteria in gem-setting. A precise arrangement is part of the watchmaking, not an incidental detail.
There is no reliable, named industry-wide statistic establishing how frequently each diamond cut appears in watches. Individual brand examples should be treated as illustrations, not market-share evidence.
