Possibly—but the missed opportunity is a storytelling question, not a proven product or sales failure. IWC’s two limited Aquatimer editions for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom drew on glowing prop watches worn by Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin. That gave them a specific screen connection, but left room for a more direct link to Aquaman himself.
What were the Aquaman Aquatimers?
Announced on 19 December 2023 in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, the IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month editions were inspired by red and blue glowing prop watches IWC supplied for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. IWC says Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin wore those props; its announcement does not identify Aquaman as a wearer. (IWC announcement)
The red watch is reference IW379405 and the blue is IW379406. IWC announced 25 pieces in each color, 50 watches in total, with release-time availability through selected IWC boutiques. That announcement does not establish present-day stock or resale availability.
What did the watches offer as Aquatimers?
The editions pair an elaborate complication set with vivid, film-inspired accents. IWC specified a 49 mm Ceratanium case, black dial and rubber strap, perpetual calendar with digital date and month displays, and chronograph. Red or blue Super-LumiNova on the dial, hands and inner rotating bezel distinguishes the two versions. The release gives the movement as calibre 89802 and states a 68-hour power reserve. IWC’s product information describes the 89000 calibre family and its 68-hour reserve, as well as the external/internal rotating bezel with SafeDive system. IWC says that system is designed to help divers track dive time and prevent an accidental movement from extending it. The release also notes a quick-change system for exchanging the rubber strap. That is a strong technical identity for a film tie-in: the watches remain recognizable as complicated Aquatimers rather than relying on a logo or simple color treatment alone. But specifications establish product character, not whether the collaboration resonated with viewers or collectors.

Where might IWC have missed an opportunity?
The hero connection is indirect
The franchise association naturally prompts a question about Aquaman, yet the official story is centered on props worn by Black Manta and Dr. Shin. The red-and-blue contrast creates an immediate visual hook and ties the watches to actual screen details. It also means a fan looking for a watch specifically worn by Aquaman should not mistake these editions for one.
Specificity can help collectors—and narrow the pitch
A watch rooted in two characters’ props may appeal to collectors who value production details over a generic superhero emblem. For a casual fan, however, the connection may be less obvious: the editions carry the film’s name, but their documented character link is not the title hero. More prominent explanation of that story could have made the rationale clearer without changing the watches.

A third direction was imaginable, not documented
IWC could conceivably have added an Aquaman-specific edition, made the hero connection more visible, or told the character story more explicitly. Those are editorial possibilities, not evidence of concepts the company considered and rejected. The available official sources do not establish a planned third watch or explain why these two characters were selected.

As a product release, the editions have a coherent case: distinctive luminous colors, substantial complications, and a connection to props used in the film. As franchise storytelling, they leave a plausible opening. A release framed around Aquaman could have made its central character link more immediate, while IWC instead chose a narrower, prop-led story about Black Manta and Dr. Shin.

That tension supports a qualified opinion, not a verdict on performance. IWC’s announcement gives no sales figures or audience-response data, and the cited sources do not establish comparative campaign results or current market value.
