Not decisively. WHOOP makes a clear case for a screenless tracker whose hardware and recovery-focused app come together in an annual membership. But the available evidence does not show that it has beaten the wider wearable market on sales, retention or value. Its US plans cost $199, $239 or $359 a year, while newly reported screenless alternatives include devices sold upfront with subscriptions optional.
What WHOOP is selling: a band and an ongoing membership
WHOOP’s model is membership-first: the device is bundled with an active subscription rather than sold as a standalone tracker with the full app experience detached. The company’s US membership comparison lists its 5.0 device with One and Peak, and MG hardware with Life. Features are tiered, too. These are WHOOP’s listed US annual prices on a support page last published May 28, 2026; prices and offers can vary by region.
| US plan | Annual price | What WHOOP lists |
|---|---|---|
| One | $199 per year | 5.0 device; core fitness and recovery insights, Strain and Sleep tracking, Strength Trainer, VO2 Max, AI Coach, Journal and Behavior Impact, and Trends. |
| Peak | $239 per year | 5.0 device; One features plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor and Healthspan, including WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging. |
| Life | $359 per year | MG hardware; Peak features plus Blood Pressure Insights and Heart Screener features, including ECG and irregular heart rhythm notifications, as well as priority phone support. |
Feature descriptions and prices are from WHOOP’s membership pricing page, last published May 28, 2026, and its US membership comparison. WHOOP notes regional variation, including different first-year terms in some places. Regulated features may not be available in every region; check local availability rather than assuming that a feature listed for the US plan is offered everywhere.
How WHOOP’s subscription compares with alternatives
The distinction is not simply “subscription versus no subscription.” It is whether the ongoing fee is required for the service you want, what the device costs upfront, and which capabilities sit behind a paid plan. The following are US prices reported in 2026, not a controlled comparison of equivalent features.

| Device | Reported US price | Subscription structure |
|---|---|---|
| WHOOP | $199, $239 or $359 per year, depending on tier | Hardware bundled with membership; WHOOP’s service proposition requires an active membership. |
| Garmin Cirqa | $199 at launch | No subscription required; Garmin Connect+ was reported as optional at $6.99 monthly or $69.99 yearly. |
| Fitbit Air | $99 | Optional subscription, according to the comparison. |
| Oura Ring 5 | From $399 | Membership also applies, according to the comparison. |
Tom’s Guide reported Garmin Cirqa’s $199 launch price on July 24, 2026, and said its full review was still forthcoming, so that is launch reporting rather than a long-term review finding: Garmin Cirqa launch coverage. Its August 21, 2026 comparison listed Fitbit Air, WHOOP, Cirqa and Oura Ring 5 at the figures above: Tom’s Guide’s wearable comparison. Prices can change. A lower upfront price or optional subscription does not establish that two devices offer the same features.
Does WHOOP’s screenless design give it an edge?
WHOOP’s defining choice is to keep the band screenless and put feedback in the app. Founder and CEO Will Ahmed explained the positioning to TechCrunch: “If you have a screen, then you’re a watch, and if you’re a watch, then you’re competing with a lot of other watches, because people will never wear two watches.” That is Ahmed’s view of the product opportunity, not proof that screenless wearables have won over watch buyers.

For someone who wants sleep, strain and recovery information without wearing a display, the form factor may be a real advantage. For someone who expects notifications, glanceable workout data or a watch face, the same choice may be a limitation. A single reviewer’s account illustrates the personal nature of this trade-off: Marie Claire UK’s reviewer said after four weeks with WHOOP Meridian that the screenless, jewellery-style band felt unobtrusive and its recovery and sleep insights were useful. That is an individual experience, not a general comfort or adherence result: Marie Claire UK’s WHOOP review.
What would count as “winning”?
WHOOP has a recognisable membership-first proposition, but “winning the subscription game” could mean several different things. A strong product fit for a particular wearer is not the same as category leadership.

- After cancellation: WHOOP requires membership for its app service. If continued access after cancelling matters, verify WHOOP’s current cancellation and access terms before joining; the available pricing information does not specify exactly what remains usable.
- Daily form: Choose among a screenless band, a watch or a ring based on whether you value a display, want a device that stays out of sight, and are comfortable with each form’s charging routine.
- Evidence quality: Separate a company’s feature descriptions and engagement figures from independent comparative studies or completed editorial reviews.
Engagement is not the same as market victory
TechCrunch reported that Ahmed put WHOOP’s daily app-open rate at 83% of monthly active users: in other words, Ahmed said that 83% of those users opened the app on any given day. It is a company-attributed engagement figure. It does not compare retention or market share against Garmin, Fitbit, Oura or Apple, and it cannot establish that WHOOP has the most loyal customers.
The available reporting also does not establish an outright market-share lead, better retention than rivals, or superior sensor accuracy. Tom’s Guide’s Cirqa launch article explicitly said its full review was still to come, so its launch coverage should not be treated as a completed head-to-head test. TechRadar’s WHOOP MG review, meanwhile, reports one reviewer’s ECG attempts as unreliable and describes a clasp problem; those observations are useful cautions, not a controlled reliability study: TechRadar’s WHOOP MG review.

Is WHOOP worth the recurring fee?
WHOOP is easiest to justify if you specifically want a screenless band, value its recovery-oriented app and expect to use the membership features over time. It is harder to justify on price alone if you mainly want a tracker and prefer to pay for hardware once, particularly now that launch and comparison coverage lists lower-cost screenless alternatives with optional subscriptions.
Before choosing, identify the features you will actually use, check which plan includes them, and compare the recurring cost with the alternative’s device price and any service fee. If you are considering Life for regulated health features, confirm availability where you live. WHOOP’s feature names should not be taken to mean that every capability is available in every region or that a wearable replaces clinical assessment.
