Whether it is the “ultimate” tool watch depends on documented dive credentials, legibility, fit and the functions you will actually use.
What makes a watch a dive watch?
A depth rating is only one part of the picture. ISO 6425:2018, the current fourth edition listed by ISO, applies to divers’ watches designed for depths of at least 100 metres and equipped with a secured system for measuring dive time that is visible in darkness. ISO says the edition was published in October 2018 and confirmed in 2024. ISO 6425:2018 listing
Longines’ August 2024 summary of the standard describes other criteria, including tests for excess pressure, shock, magnetic fields, condensation, corrosion and temperature variation, as well as luminous visibility and a secure dive-time indicator. It describes a minimum rating of 10 bar / 100 metres and an immersion test at 25% excess pressure. This is the manufacturer’s explanation; ISO is the authoritative source for the standard itself. Longines’ technical press release
That distinction matters when comparing watches: a printed depth figure does not, by itself, establish ISO 6425 certification or show that every criterion has been met.

What does the chronograph add?
A chronograph is a stopwatch function for timing elapsed intervals. It is separate from the secured dive-time measuring system required by ISO 6425. A rotating dive bezel is one example of such a system; the chronograph can add useful timing on land and for other tasks without replacing it.
Do not assume the chronograph pushers can be operated underwater. That depends on the exact model and its instructions. Unless the manual explicitly allows underwater operation, use the dive-time indicator as directed and keep the pushers untouched while submerged.

Are dive chronographs actually used by people who dive?
They can be, provided the specific watch has suitable, documented dive-watch credentials and is maintained in water-ready condition. The chronograph’s presence alone does not establish suitability for diving. For an actual dive, use the watch’s secured dive-time system as intended; a chronograph is an additional complication, not a replacement for that system or a dive computer.
A documented example: Certina DS Action Diver Chrono
Certina lists the DS Action Diver Chrono, reference C032.827.18.271.00, as an automatic chronograph certified to ISO 6425:2018 and rated to 300 metres. The manufacturer specifies a unidirectional rotating bezel and a 30-minute chronograph. Its listed dimensions are 44.6 mm in diameter, 16.17 mm high, and 52.58 mm lug-to-lug, with a 21 mm lug width; the movement is listed as Valjoux A05.231. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test findings. Certina product page

How to judge whether one suits you
- Verify the dive credentials. Look for explicit ISO 6425 certification, not only a depth marking.
- Inspect the dive-time system. It should be secure and easy for you to read, including in darkness.
- Check pusher instructions. Confirm underwater operation in the manual for the exact reference; do not assume it is allowed.
- Assess fit. Compare diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length with watches that sit comfortably on your wrist. A capable watch that is too large or thick for you may not be a practical everyday choice.
- Consider upkeep. Water resistance depends on the condition of the particular watch, not just its original specification.
What should owners know about water resistance?
A rating such as 300 metres does not guarantee that a particular used watch remains water resistant today. Age, damage, a case that has been opened and deteriorated seals can affect its condition. Have the exact watch checked by an appropriately qualified service provider before taking it into water.

Service intervals are model-dependent. TAG Heuer’s care guidance for watches worn in water recommends water-resistance testing every two years because sealing gaskets age and corrode, and usually recommends a full overhaul every five to six years. Treat that as TAG Heuer guidance, not a universal schedule; follow the manual and service advice for your own watch. TAG Heuer care guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, are dive chronographs the ultimate tool watches?
They offer a compelling combination: a dedicated dive-time indicator plus a separate stopwatch, in a watch that may also be suitable for everyday wear. But “ultimate” is subjective. The evidence supports the category’s versatility, not a claim that it is universally superior. Choose one when its documented dive credentials, readable timing system, fit and maintenance needs make sense for you—and treat the chronograph as an extra function, not permission to operate its pushers underwater.
