What you need for Garmin-iPhone compatibility

Apple’s notification settings govern alerts sent to connected Bluetooth devices. Garmin says, “The option to respond to text messages from a watch is not available through iOS.” Garmin lists iOS text-message actions such as clearing the notification, using Phone Assistant, or blocking an app. Other notification actions can vary by model and software version.
Dismissing a notification on the watch does not mark the message as read on the iPhone. A previously received message may therefore appear again in later notifications until it is marked read on the phone.

Phone calls depend on the model
With an iPhone, a Garmin watch can offer call notification controls, but those controls do not establish that the watch has a microphone and speaker for an on-wrist conversation. Check the manual for the exact model to confirm whether it supports audio calls. Do not assume that every Garmin watch can conduct calls itself.

How to pair a Garmin watch with an iPhone
- If the watch appears in the new iPhone’s Bluetooth menu, remove that pairing before continuing.
- Install and open Garmin Connect, then sign in or create an account.
- In Garmin Connect, select More > Garmin Devices > Add Device > Find Nearby Accessories.
- Put the watch into pairing mode. Depending on the model, this may be under a menu such as Settings > Bluetooth or Phone > Pair Mobile Device / Pair Phone.
- When the app finds the watch, select Set Up.
- Confirm that the six-digit code on the watch matches the one in Garmin Connect, select Done, and follow the remaining prompts.
When moving a watch to a new iPhone, Garmin recommends removing the old phone pairing and turning off the old phone so it does not try to reconnect.

How to enable iPhone notifications
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Notifications and select the app whose alerts you want to receive.
- Enable Allow Notifications, ensure Notification Center is selected, and choose a suitable Show Previews setting.
- Check the watch’s notification controls in its settings. Garmin gives a menu path such as Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Smart Notifications > Apps > Connected Apps; labels vary by model and software version.
- Keep the watch paired with the iPhone and allow the relevant app to send a notification so it can appear in the watch’s connected-app controls, if applicable.
Garmin notes that the native Phone and Messages apps do not have the same block controls as other apps; manage calls and texts through the watch’s Smart Notifications settings.
Common problems and practical fixes
The watch will not pair
- Check Garmin Connect’s current iOS requirement and update the app if needed.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- If the watch is listed in the iPhone’s Bluetooth menu, remove that pairing and restart setup in Garmin Connect.
- Make sure the watch is in pairing mode, then confirm the six-digit codes match.
Notifications are not appearing
- Check that the watch remains paired with the iPhone.
- Review the affected app’s iPhone notification settings, including Allow Notifications and Notification Center.
- Review the watch’s Smart Notifications settings and available connected-app controls.

The watch shows calls, but the conversation stays on the phone
