No routine battery change is required for a Seiko Astron GPS Solar watch. Light replenishes its energy store, which is a rechargeable secondary battery—not an ordinary disposable watch battery. That does not mean the component can never need professional service: if the watch will not recover after charging, or its running time has declined, contact a Seiko retailer or service center rather than opening the case or fitting a standard battery.
Does a Seiko Astron have a battery?
Yes. The watch contains a special rechargeable secondary battery that stores energy collected from light. Seiko’s Astron U.S. product page says the watch takes the energy it needs from light and does not require periodic battery replacement. “No periodic replacement” is not the same as “no battery inside,” nor does it rule out eventual professional repair.

Do not substitute an ordinary silver-oxide watch battery. Seiko’s 8X22 manual identifies the cell as a special secondary battery, says replacement requires professional knowledge and skill, and warns that installing an ordinary silver-oxide battery can cause heat, bursting, or ignition. The 8X22 is a model-specific manual; check the instructions for your watch’s caliber.

How long does it run without more light?
Seiko’s Astron technology page says a fully charged watch continues running for about six months. For the technology described on that page, after 72 hours without light the watch enters sleep mode: its hands stop and it stops attempting GPS reception, while time-of-day information can be retained for up to two years.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes individual box, Japanese warranty (1 year), and individual box
- Solar radio wave correction function (receives standard radio waves in Japan, China, USA, Germany, and UK)
- Full auto-calendar function (until December 31, 2099)
- Time difference correction function
- Automatic needle position correction function
These are Seiko’s stated operating figures, not a guarantee for every Astron model or every use pattern. Charging, light exposure, operating conditions, and the specific caliber matter.
What should you do if an Astron stops?
- Check the instructions for your caliber. Follow its directions for exposing the dial to suitable light; charging guidance may differ by model.
- Allow time for recovery. Seiko says that when charge has fallen below a certain point, normal operation may not resume until the watch has received light for a few minutes.
- Arrange professional diagnosis if needed. If the watch does not resume after adequate charging, or its charge duration has noticeably declined, contact a Seiko retailer or service center. Give them the model or caliber and describe what happens.
Do not open the case or attempt a battery swap. Seiko’s service route varies by model and region: the 8X22 manual directs owners to the retailer where the watch was purchased for secondary-battery replacement, while the 8X42 manual directs owners to their original retailer or Seiko’s Worldwide Service Network for repair or overhaul. Consult Seiko’s local service information for the route available where you live.

Is routine servicing the same as changing the battery?
No. The 8X42 manual recommends inspection and adjustment by disassembly and cleaning approximately every three to four years for that watch. That is a model-specific maintenance recommendation, not a battery-replacement interval; it should not be applied automatically to every Astron caliber.
