The DOXA Expandro is a vintage expandable bracelet developed for divers: its spring-linked sections let the bracelet open around a wetsuit, while a separate ratchet inside the clasp adjusts its fit on the wrist. DOXA identifies the German-made Kiefer-Cadman model as the one quickly dubbed “Expandro.” The name is also used loosely by collectors for some early DOXA SUB bracelets that may not carry that marking.
What is a DOXA Expandro bracelet?
DOXA’s official history places the bracelet in the context of its first SUB 300, designed in the mid-1960s. Third parties developed extendible bracelets for divers, including a German-made Kiefer-Cadman model that became known as the Expandro because it could extend enough to fit over a wetsuit. The practical problem it addressed was simple: a diver’s watch had to stay secure on the wrist both over a suit and without one. DOXA’s account captures the aim: “What is the point of developing the most accurate and trusted diver’s watch if it doesn’t stay on your wrist?” DOXA’s history of its bracelets
In collector usage, “Expandro” does not always mean a bracelet visibly stamped with that word. Fratello reports that early DOXA SUB bracelets are often called Expandro even when unmarked, while marked Kiefer-Cadman examples came later. Treat the term as useful shorthand, not proof of maker or originality.
How does the expansion mechanism work?
The bracelet’s expansion and its wrist-size adjustment are two distinct features. Fratello describes spring elements in links at either end of the clasp. These allow the bracelet to flex and extend around a wetsuit, then return toward its shorter form. DOXA describes an additional link housed in the deployant buckle, with a safety push-button intended to prevent accidental opening or retraction. The historical reference document also describes a flex-buckle system. Fratello’s account of the Expandro Historical DOXA SUB bracelet reference

Separately, a push-button ratchet inside the clasp adjusts the bracelet’s fit. Pressing the adjustment button allows the clasp to move through its sizing mechanism; it is not the same action as extending the spring-linked sections over a wetsuit. Confusing these functions can make a bracelet seem defective when one mechanism works and the other does not—or hide a failure in one of them.
Which bracelet came on an early DOXA SUB 300?
Fratello reports that the earliest 1967 SUB 300 bracelet used matching end links numbered 7720-4. For the subsequent SUB 300 T generation, it reports a slightly different 7720-10 end link. These references are specialist reporting, not a DOXA parts catalog, and they should be read as clues to fit and period rather than a complete authentication test.

DOXA says SUB bracelets appeared in three main versions and four deployant-buckle variants, differing in buckle width and logo. Its official account says the wrist-side interior carried the invention name and German patent number 2111820. Those details can help identify what a particular bracelet claims to be, but a marking or end-link number alone cannot establish that a bracelet is original to a specific watch.
What should you inspect on a vintage Expandro?
Age-related wear can affect the bracelet’s two mechanisms independently. Fratello identifies broken expansion springs and broken clasp adjustment buttons as concerns; a failed adjustment button can disable ratchet sizing. Its repair comments are the author’s assessment, not a universal finding about whether every example can be repaired.

- Expansion: Check that the spring-linked sections move and return smoothly, without a broken or visibly missing spring.
- Clasp adjustment: Test whether the button engages the ratchet and whether the clasp can be adjusted through its available positions.
- Safety: Check that the deployant buckle closes securely and that the safety push-button behaves as intended.
- Fit clues: Compare the end-link reference and fit with the watch, and note clasp width, logo and interior markings.
- Overall condition: Look for damage or excessive wear in the metal, links and clasp that could affect secure wear.
A watchmaker familiar with vintage bracelets can assess a questionable example. Do not assume that a bracelet is safe to wear just because its clasp closes: the expansion, adjustment and safety functions all deserve separate checks.
Do markings prove a bracelet is authentic?
No single reference or clasp marking settles the question. Early examples may be unmarked, according to Fratello, and the reported end-link references help with comparison but are not a definitive authentication system. A more useful assessment considers the combination of end-link fit, buckle variant and width, logo or patent markings, and the working condition of the expansion and ratchet mechanisms. The available accounts describe historical versions and clues, not a comprehensive catalog for verifying every watch-and-bracelet pairing.

Why did the Expandro disappear?
DOXA says the expansion mechanism was not without problems and that the method disappeared in the 1980s. That history helps explain why surviving examples deserve careful mechanical inspection: the design’s convenience came with moving parts that can age or fail. The sources do not establish production totals, failure rates, current prices or present-day availability.
