The auction closed on October 24, 2024. The watch is documented as having flown on Apollo 14; whether Mitchell wore it on the lunar surface is not known.
What Rolex did Edgar Mitchell wear on Apollo 14?
Mitchell’s watch was a personal Rolex GMT-Master, reference 1675, with a black dial and red-and-blue 24-hour bezel. Post-sale coverage describes it as 40 mm. RR Auction said Mitchell wore it during his January 1971 flight to the Moon, distinguishing it from the NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster Professional chronographs used by Apollo astronauts.

The auction listing included photographs of Mitchell wearing the Rolex, an engraved caseback, and a typed letter of authenticity signed by Mitchell. RR Auction’s October 2, 2024 article also relayed Mitchell’s remark: “I never worried about winding my watch because I wore a Rolex.” RR Auction
Was Mitchell’s Rolex actually worn on the lunar surface?
The available documentation supports describing the watch as Apollo-flown or worn during the Apollo 14 mission. It does not establish that Mitchell wore it on the Moon. Space.com reported after the sale that it is unknown whether he wore or brought the watch into the lunar module during the landing, or wore it under his spacesuit on the surface. A pre-sale suggestion that it was “most likely” on his wrist during the moonwalk is an inference, not confirmed provenance.

That distinction matters: a watch can be documented as flown on a lunar mission without proof that it was worn outside the spacecraft on the lunar surface. RR Auction’s evidence—Mitchell’s signed letter, the caseback engraving, and photographs—supports the flight connection, not a definitive claim of lunar-surface wear. Space.com
What does the engraving say?
The caseback dedication is reported as: “Worn by Cdr. E. Mitchell on Apollo 14, 1971, To Karlin [sic] — My Daughter.” Mitchell’s daughter’s name is Karlyn; the engraving misspells it as “Karlin.” The “[sic]” indicates that the spelling is reproduced as engraved rather than corrected.

Space.com reported that the lot drew more than 30 bids and sold for $2,163,199 including buyer premium. The hammer price—the winning bid before the buyer premium—was $1,730,559. The pre-sale estimate reported in coverage was more than $400,000; an estimate is an auction house’s guide, not a guaranteed value or a prior sale price. Space.com
For context, Space.com reported that astronaut Ron Evans’s personal Rolex GMT-Master, flown on Apollo 17, sold at Heritage Auctions in 2009 for $131,450 including buyer premium. The two results are not directly comparable: the watches had different provenance, and the auctions took place in different years and market conditions.
How rare was the Apollo 14 Rolex?
The counts reported around this sale refer to different groups. In October 2024, RR Auction said three Rolex GMT watches of that era were known to have flown in orbit around the Moon, and described Mitchell’s as the last known example from the Apollo program. Space.com later called Mitchell’s watch one of only two known moon-flown Rolexes to have been sold at auction. The first figure concerns known watches flown around the Moon; the second concerns known auction sales, so they are not competing totals for the same category.
How the Rolex fits into Apollo watch history
Apollo astronauts received NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster Professional chronographs for use in space. Some also wore personal watches under their suits. Mitchell’s Rolex was his own watch, separate from the issued Omega; the cited accounts do not establish that it replaced or competed with the Speedmaster as official equipment. NASA: 50 Years Ago: Apollo 14
For collectors comparing space-flown watches, the useful distinctions are the strength of the provenance, the mission and flight status, whether lunar-surface wear is documented, whether the watch was personal property or issued equipment, and whether a reported auction figure includes the buyer premium. A headline price alone does not make two sales equivalent.
