The watch is more than a timepiece: its manually deployed antenna activates a personal distress transmitter. Breitling describes the system as sending a 406 MHz satellite-alert signal and a 121.5 MHz homing signal. Those functions can help rescuers locate someone, but they do not guarantee a rescue.
How the Breitling Emergency beacon works
The Emergency II combines a wristwatch with a personal locator beacon. Breitling says the transmitter alternates between two frequencies: a digital 406 MHz signal intended for satellite alerting and an analog 121.5 MHz signal used for homing. The manufacturer specifies the signal timings as 0.44 seconds every 50 seconds for 406 MHz and 0.75 seconds every 2.25 seconds for 121.5 MHz. These are manufacturer-published operating details, not independent field-test results. Breitling’s operating instructions explain the system.
The beacon does not simply broadcast the wearer’s coordinates or itself dispatch a named rescue team. Its alert and homing signals are intended to support a search. The outcome still depends on circumstances such as detection, location, and a rescue response.
Activation is deliberate
To activate the transmitter, the wearer deploys the antenna sections housed in the case. Breitling’s instructions describe unscrewing and pulling out the antenna covers, then extending the sections. The company says antenna deployment automatically activates transmission. Because this is emergency equipment, users should follow the instructions supplied with their specific watch rather than treating this description as a substitute for training or the manual.

Published beacon endurance
Breitling’s technical data classifies the transmitter as a Category 2 personal locator beacon and lists transmission at 121.5 MHz and 406.040 MHz. The company specifies transmitter autonomy of at least 18 hours at −20°C and at least 24 hours at +20°C. Those are the manufacturer’s stated specifications, not independent endurance measurements. The beacon has a battery separate from the watch battery. Breitling’s technical specifications provide the listed figures.
What the survival stories report
The Emergency’s strongest public-interest claim is that its beacon has helped people in danger. Two frequently cited examples come from secondary reporting. The distinction matters: the accounts below describe what the reporting says, not a case-by-case confirmation from a rescue authority that the watch was the decisive locating method.

Two pilots in Antarctica, 2003
A Business Today report published October 10, 2013 recounts the story of British pilots Squadron Leader Steve Brooks and Flight Lieutenant Hugh Quentin-Smith. It says the pair ditched a helicopter in Antarctica in 2003, activated their Breitling Emergency watches, spent eight hours in a life raft, and were picked up by a rescue aircraft.
The account presents the watches as part of the rescue story. An official incident report confirming that their signals were the decisive means of locating the pilots was not established in the available source record, so the watch’s exact role should not be overstated.

Mark Spencer in Alaska, 2012
The same Business Today article describes hunter Mark Spencer becoming stranded and hypothermic in Alaska in August 2012. It says he activated his Emergency watch and was located and evacuated by helicopter after the signal was detected. The article describes the episode as a survival aided by the beacon; independent primary rescue documentation confirming the watch’s role was not established in the available account.
How the watch developed
Breitling’s own accounts describe different milestones rather than one simple launch date. Its anniversary history says the idea dates to the 1980s and that the Emergency was announced to the press in 1995. The company says it could not be sold until Swiss communications approval in May 1996, with US permission following in 2000. A separate Breitling heritage timeline dates an original single-antenna Emergency to 1988 and the patented antenna deployment system to 1995. These are the brand’s retrospective dates and claims. Breitling’s anniversary history and its heritage timeline lay out those milestones.

Breitling says the original system used 121.5 MHz, while Emergency II added dual-frequency transmission. The company also states that developing the watch cost $7 million. That figure is a brand-reported development budget, not an independently audited total.

The transmitter comes in a large, technical watch. Breitling lists a 51 mm titanium case, 5-bar water resistance, sapphire crystal, a bidirectional bezel with compass scale, and a transmitter-watch weight of 140 g without the strap. One listed reference is 21.6 mm thick; thickness and strap or bracelet options can vary by reference and market, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming every Emergency is identical.

The watch uses Breitling Caliber 76, a COSC-certified thermocompensated SuperQuartz movement. Its functions include analog and LCD digital displays, a chronograph, timer, second time zone, multilingual calendar, and battery end-of-life indication. The beacon adds distinct emergency capability, but the watch’s considerable size and specialized purpose make it a niche choice rather than an everyday fit for everyone. Breitling’s product and technical pages list the specifications and available configurations.
What the stories do—and do not—establish
The reported rescues illustrate why a manually activated beacon can matter when ordinary communication is unavailable: an alert signal can bring attention to an emergency, and a homing signal can help narrow a search. They do not establish that every activation will be detected, that a rescue will be immediate, or that the watch can replace proper emergency planning and equipment. The two named cases are reported by a secondary source; Breitling’s broad statements about lives saved do not, by themselves, independently document the details of either incident.
