Which Rolex Daytona did Ellen DeGeneres reportedly buy?
Time+Tide reported on October 22, 2019, that DeGeneres’s latest purchase was a solid yellow-gold Daytona ref. 6241, bought from Amsterdam-based dealer Jasper Lijfering. The report followed an Instagram post by Lijfering. Time+Tide’s 2019 report is contemporary watch-media coverage, not a sale document or auction record.
A New York Times News Service report reproduced by ArtDaily likewise describes Lijfering’s account of the transaction and the watch’s gold case and bracelet, black dial, gold subdials and black bezel insert. Those transaction details are attributed to the dealer. ArtDaily’s report uses “around $750,000” in its headline, but that figure should not be treated as a verified price paid by DeGeneres.
What “Paul Newman” and “John Player Special” mean
“Paul Newman” is the collector name for a style of exotic Daytona dial, not the model’s official reference name. On the reported DeGeneres watch, the dial’s black-and-gold palette is also described as “John Player Special.” That nickname refers to the color scheme; it does not mean every gold ref. 6241 has this dial.

A GQ watch-expert segment identifies the gold Paul Newman ref. 6241 shown in its discussion of DeGeneres’s watches and describes pump pushers, a black acrylic bezel and an Oyster bracelet. The segment’s expert calls it “a Paul Newman reference 6241, produced in solid gold.” This is a description of the watch shown, not independent proof of the specific sale. Watch the GQ segment.
Why ref. 6241 is collectible
Phillips dates the ref. 6241 to approximately 1966–1969 and estimates that no more than 3,000 were produced. Phillips also says only a small percentage had the exotic, or Paul Newman, dial. The production number is a qualified auction-house estimate, not a definitive factory count. Phillips’s ref. 6241 catalogue entry gives this context.

The reference appeared in both steel and gold, and gold examples themselves vary. Phillips catalogues a 14K yellow-gold ref. 6241 with a black Paul Newman dial as a John Player Special. Christie’s has catalogued an 18K gold ref. 6241 with a champagne Paul Newman dial. These examples show why “gold ref. 6241” alone does not specify either the metal purity or dial configuration. The ArtDaily headline’s “around $750,000” is not a confirmed transaction price. The available reporting does not provide a numbered auction lot or primary sale document establishing what DeGeneres paid. It is therefore safest to describe the figure as reported price context, not a verified sale amount.

Auction results demonstrate how widely outcomes can differ between configurations, but they do not value DeGeneres’s watch:
