A GPS-only Apple Watch can do many things without its paired iPhone nearby: track workouts and activity, play audio downloaded to the watch, make Apple Pay purchases, check heart rate, and use timekeeping and other local features. Compatible Wi-Fi adds supported connected features such as messages, calls with the right setup, audio streaming, weather, and Home control. GPS provides location information; it does not provide cellular or internet connectivity.
What “without an iPhone” means
There are two different situations: the iPhone is away but the watch can connect to compatible Wi-Fi, or the watch has no connection to the iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service. Apple documents different capabilities for each situation. A GPS-only model has no cellular connection.
| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| iPhone away; compatible Wi-Fi available | Supported network features may work, including messages, calls with the required setup, audio streaming, weather, stocks, Home control, and compatible apps. |
| No iPhone connection, Wi-Fi, or cellular service | Local functions remain available, including workouts, activity tracking, downloaded audio, Apple Pay, heart-rate checks, timekeeping, alarms, and timers. |
Apple Watch uses Bluetooth to communicate with its paired iPhone and can use compatible Wi-Fi when Bluetooth is unavailable. Apple Support notes that public networks requiring a login, subscription, or profile may not connect, so seeing a Wi-Fi network nearby does not guarantee the watch can use it.
What works when the watch is fully disconnected
Track workouts and activity
You can record workouts and activity goals without carrying the paired iPhone. The watch’s built-in GPS can provide outdoor workout distance and speed information without the phone. Apple’s Watch User Guide recommends calibrating the watch for more accurate GPS information during an outdoor workout without the iPhone.

Use Apple Pay and basic timekeeping
Apple lists Apple Pay purchases, checking the time, alarms, timers, and stopwatch among the features available without the paired iPhone nearby. Set up Apple Pay before leaving, and remember that whether a purchase works depends on the card, payment network, merchant, and location.
What compatible Wi-Fi adds
When the iPhone is away, compatible Wi-Fi can let the watch use supported connected features. Apple lists getting apps from the App Store, sending messages, making calls if Wi-Fi Calling is enabled or using FaceTime audio, streaming audio, checking weather and stocks, controlling the home, and using third-party apps that support Wi-Fi.
These features depend on the watch model, region, settings, account, and the app or service involved. Wi-Fi availability does not mean every phone feature or notification will work independently. Apple notes that certain messages and third-party notifications can still depend on the paired iPhone being powered on and connected to a network.

What GPS-only does not mean
GPS-only means the watch has GPS positioning but no cellular connection. GPS can support outdoor workout distance and speed information, but it does not give the watch mobile-network access or general internet access. Connected features require a supported path, such as a nearby iPhone or compatible Wi-Fi.

|---|---|
| You mainly want workouts, activity tracking, local functions, Apple Pay, and downloaded audio. | You want the watch to connect to mobile networks when away from both the iPhone and Wi-Fi. |
| You usually carry your iPhone or can use compatible Wi-Fi for supported connected features. | Independent mobile connectivity is important to you; check current model, carrier, and regional support. |
A GPS-only watch can be useful without an iPhone nearby, but its connected capabilities are limited to supported Wi-Fi use. GPS + Cellular models can connect to mobile networks, subject to model, carrier, and regional availability.
