The Rolex Day-Date 18238 is a 36 mm, 18k yellow-gold Day-Date, usually paired with a fluted bezel and concealed-clasp President bracelet. Its defining upgrade over the earlier 18038 generation is the automatic caliber 3155, which lets the wearer correct the day and date independently. Production is generally placed at about 1988 to 2000, though the start date is approximate.
What is the Rolex Day-Date 18238?
The 18238 is a yellow-gold version of Rolex’s 36 mm Day-Date. Its familiar layout puts the day display at 12 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock. Phillips catalogued a 1990 example with an 18k yellow-gold case, a 36 mm diameter, and an automatic caliber 3155 (2015).
The usual configuration includes a fluted bezel, sapphire crystal, and a President bracelet. Individual watches can differ markedly in dial material, markers, language, pattern, and factory-set gems, so the reference number alone does not describe the whole watch.
When was the 18238 made?
Specialist reference histories generally place production from about 1988 until 2000. Sotheby’s describes the reference as remaining in production until 2000 (2026). The commonly cited start year is approximate: serial-number dating and reference histories may differ, so a watch’s documents and serial should be assessed on their own rather than using a single year as definitive proof.

What does “double quickset” mean?
The 18238’s automatic caliber 3155 allows rapid, independent correction of both the day and date. That is the “double quickset” feature: each calendar display can be adjusted without advancing the hands through every intervening day. Phillips describes the 3155 as a mechanism with a “double quick-set date function” that allows rapid adjustment of both calendar displays (2026).
This is the generation’s key practical distinction from the preceding 18038. For setting instructions or safe handling, use documentation appropriate to the individual watch; the feature description alone is not a substitute for operating guidance.

Why is the President bracelet part of the watch’s identity?
The bracelet is not just an interchangeable styling detail in the 18238’s familiar form: its concealed clasp and semi-circular three-piece links are central to the Day-Date’s President look. Rolex says the President bracelet was created in 1956 for the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date (official brochure, 2024). On a pre-owned example, however, the bracelet’s condition and whether it is correct to the watch matter as much as its design.
Which 18238 dials are collectible?
There is no single dial type that is automatically the most collectible across all 18238s. Phillips and Sotheby’s catalogues document examples spanning conventional metal dials as well as marble, hardstone, lacquer, and mother-of-pearl executions; gem-set versions also exist. Rarity, originality, condition, and credible documentation all affect how a particular dial is regarded.

- Conventional metal dials: Champagne and baton-marker styles are generally easier to assess against familiar configurations.
- Unusual materials and finishes: Marble, hardstone, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and porcelain dials need careful identification; a striking appearance by itself does not establish that a dial is original to the watch.
- Gem-set dials: Confirm whether the setting is factory-original and supported by reliable provenance, rather than assuming that precious stones make a watch more valuable.
What should you check before buying one?
Two watches with the same reference can differ significantly in originality, wear, service history, and completeness. Evaluate the specific watch, not just the number on its case.
Originality and configuration
- Ask whether the dial, hands, bracelet, clasp, and other reference components are original or later replacements.
- For unusual dial materials or gem settings, request documentation that supports the dial’s identity and history.
- Check that the bracelet and end-link markings are appropriate to the watch rather than relying on appearance alone.
Case and bracelet condition
- Look for well-defined lugs and bezel geometry; excessive polishing can soften the case’s original lines.
- Assess bracelet link tightness, stretch, and clasp wear. A worn bracelet can be a material condition concern even when the watch looks presentable from the front.
Movement and service evidence
- Ask for service records and, where available, recent accuracy or movement-condition documentation for the caliber 3155.
- Clarify which parts were replaced during service. Service work can be useful, but replacement components may affect originality.
Completeness and ownership history
Box, papers, service receipts, and a credible chain of ownership can help establish a watch’s history. They do not replace an inspection of the watch itself, especially when dial originality or condition is central to the asking price.

How much is a Rolex Day-Date 18238 worth?
There is no single current value supported for every 18238 dial, condition, bracelet state, or market. A documented 1990 example was offered with a CHF 20,000–40,000 estimate by Phillips in 2015. That is a historical auction estimate for one lot, not a current price guide or a statement of what every example sells for.
For a present-day valuation, compare recent, genuinely comparable examples in the relevant geography and account for condition, polishing, bracelet stretch, dial originality and rarity, movement service, completeness, and provenance. An unusual dial may command interest, but it can also make authentication and comparison more demanding.

Is the 18238 a good vintage President watch?
It can suit a buyer who wants the classic 36 mm yellow-gold Day-Date format and values the 3155’s independent day-and-date correction. The strongest purchase is not necessarily the rarest-looking example: clear originality, sound case and bracelet condition, credible service information, and a price grounded in comparable watches are more useful starting points than the reference number alone.
