Messenger notifications can still be mirrored from your iPhone to your Apple Watch, and some alerts may offer quick-reply actions—but that is not the same as having a full Messenger app on your wrist.
What happened to Messenger on Apple Watch?
Meta confirmed that the standalone Messenger Apple Watch app would no longer be available after May 31, 2023. The change affected the dedicated watchOS app, not Messenger on iPhone, desktop, or the web. TechCrunch reported Meta’s announcement at the time.

In practical terms, Apple Watch owners should no longer expect an official Messenger inbox or the former app’s complete conversation interface. An old Messenger icon on a watch does not prove that Meta still supports the app; it may be a leftover installation or cached software state.

Messenger notifications may still appear on a paired Apple Watch through Apple’s notification-mirroring system. You can generally see incoming message alerts and previews without installing a native Messenger watch app.

Some notifications may also show actions such as replying. Availability can vary with the message type, iPhone settings, watchOS and iOS versions, connectivity, Focus modes, and Messenger’s notification behavior. A notification-level reply does not restore the old app: it does not provide a dependable way to browse chats, start any conversation, view the full inbox, or handle every message type.
How to turn Messenger notifications back on
- Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to Mirror iPhone Alerts From.
- Turn on Messenger.

Also check Settings → Notifications → Messenger on the iPhone. Messenger must be allowed to send notifications, and alerts may need to be enabled for the Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners. Focus, Do Not Disturb, Sleep, scheduled notification summaries, and muted conversations can also prevent an alert from appearing.
Does the watch need to be near the iPhone?
Not necessarily, but the answer depends on the watch model and network connection. A cellular Apple Watch may use cellular data away from the iPhone, while a Wi-Fi model may need a known Wi-Fi network or the iPhone nearby.
For third-party push notifications, Apple says the paired iPhone generally must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, although it does not necessarily need to be physically nearby. An offline watch should not be expected to receive new Messenger alerts. See Apple’s guidance on using Apple Watch without the iPhone nearby.

What no longer works through the official app
- A full, official Messenger app on the watch.
- Browsing your Messenger inbox and older conversations from that app.
- Relying on the former standalone interface to send and receive messages.
- Assuming that an Apple Watch with cellular service has an independent Messenger client.
For complete conversations, media, and Messenger features, the official iPhone app remains the most dependable option. Meta’s current Messenger access routes are also described in its Messenger Help Center.
What to do if alerts do not appear
- Confirm Messenger notifications are enabled in Settings → Notifications → Messenger on the iPhone.
- Confirm Messenger is enabled under Watch → My Watch → Notifications → Mirror iPhone Alerts From.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, Sleep, and notification-summary settings.
- Make sure Messenger is installed and signed in on the iPhone.
- Confirm the iPhone is powered on and connected.
- Check that the watch has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular connectivity.
- Restart both devices if the settings are correct but alerts remain absent.
If the Messenger toggle is missing, first enable Messenger notifications on the iPhone and generate a notification. Pairing or software glitches can also prevent the notification list from updating, so there is no single guaranteed fix for every iOS and watchOS configuration.

Can a third-party app replace Messenger?
One option listed in the U.S. App Store is WatchMessage for Messenger. Its listing advertises recent-chat access, text and media viewing, voice messages, and replies using features such as the keyboard, emoji, Scribble, dictation, and voice messages.
It is not affiliated with Meta. As checked on August 18, 2026, the listing showed iOS 15 or later, watchOS 8 or later, a free download with in-app purchases, and a $2.99 Pro purchase. It also showed version 1.6 dated January 31, 2024, and a rating of 2.2 out of 5 from 128 ratings. App Store prices, ratings, availability, and terms can change.

Before signing in or paying, review the developer’s privacy policy, App Store disclosures, permissions, account-security prompts, and cancellation terms. An independent client may depend on Meta’s authentication systems and could stop working if Messenger changes its security or APIs. Treat it as a potentially fragile workaround, not an official replacement.
Is Facebook Messenger itself shutting down?
No. The Apple Watch app’s discontinuation is separate from Meta’s 2026 change involving Messenger.com, the standalone desktop website. That website change concerns web access and should not be confused with the Apple Watch app sunset. The iPhone Messenger app remains a separate access route. TechCrunch covered the Messenger.com change.
Why did Meta discontinue the watch app?
Meta confirmed the discontinuation but did not provide a detailed public technical explanation in the cited announcement. Commentary about Apple’s watchOS strategy or Meta’s platform priorities is speculation, not an established reason. The confirmed facts are the May 31, 2023 cutoff and continued notification support.

For most Apple Watch owners, enabling notification mirroring is the sensible no-cost solution. Use the iPhone Messenger app when you need full functionality, and consider a third-party client only if browsing or composing chats from the watch is worth the added privacy, compatibility, and support risks.
