Fam al Hut’s debut, the MARK 1 Möbius, puts an unconventional mechanical display at the center of its design: a bi-axis tourbillon, double retrograde indication and jumping hour in an openworked, capsule-shaped case. In a November 2025 interview with Monochrome Watches, co-founders Xinyan Dai and Lukas Youn described a pursuit of mechanical art; a later account of the company’s Taicang workshop shows how that ambition is being translated into manufacturing, while also making clear that the watch’s long-term reliability remains unproven.
Who are Fam al Hut’s founders?
Fam al Hut is a Chinese independent watch brand co-founded by designer Xinyan Dai and collector Lukas Youn. The founders link the brand’s name to Fomalhaut, a bright star. In an interview conducted in Shanghai over five days, published by Frank Geelen at Monochrome Watches on November 18, 2025, they positioned the company as an attempt to create a distinct Chinese voice in high-end watchmaking rather than imitate an established Swiss idiom.
Youn put the challenge this way: “Everyone said it couldn’t be done. The assumption was that “haute horlogerie” was an exclusively Swiss domain. But Dai and I believed the opposite. We thought: why not create a Chinese brand that doesn’t imitate, but innovates …one that offers a new conceptual design, and uncompromising finishing to speak its own design language?”
What is the MARK 1 Möbius?
The Möbius is Fam al Hut’s debut watch. Its presentation is built around the movement rather than a conventional dial: the openworked mechanism is visible inside a compact, lugless capsule-shaped case. The brand describes the result as combining a bi-axis tourbillon with a double retrograde display and a jumping hour.

Fam al Hut’s English product page lists the following specifications in 2026. These are brand-published figures, not independent test results.

The dimensions help explain the watch’s unusual proportions: it is long and narrow rather than round, and the stated 17 mm maximum height occurs at the tourbillon rather than across the whole case. The 3 ATM water-resistance rating is a modest specification; it should not be read as a claim of suitability for swimming.

How does the Möbius display work?
The two retrograde hands travel across their respective arcs and return to the beginning instead of making a full circle. The tourbillon adds a second layer of motion: according to Masaharu Wada’s August 19, 2026 report for Hodinkee, its two rotations run on 60- and 90-second cycles. Together with the jumping hour, these elements make the mechanism’s movement the visual focus, not simply a hidden means of keeping time.
Dai described the broader ambition in the Monochrome interview: “For us, timekeeping is almost secondary. What we truly pursue is mechanical art. The goal isn’t simply precision, but poetry through engineering.” That framing is useful for understanding the watch’s priorities, but it is not evidence that timekeeping performance is unimportant or that the model has been independently tested for accuracy.

What did the founders say about design and performance?
In the 2025 interview, Dai said Fam al Hut defines the concept and exterior before developing the movement around it. She also explained how the founders rank their goals: “We rank them in this order: creativity, innovation, and then performance. Chronometric precision is essential, but in the world of haute horlogerie, it’s expected. True distinction comes from originality-the courage to create new mechanical art.”
In Wada’s 2026 workshop report, Dai characterized the process differently and more briefly: “We start with engineering first,”. These are statements from different conversations and describe the founders’ approach in their respective contexts; they should not be collapsed into a single universal workflow. The 2026 report also quotes Youn saying, “The MARK 1 we’re making now is almost a completely different watch from the one that won the GPHG.” Wada reports that the company revisited roughly 98 percent of the movement components after the award; that figure is the journalist’s account of component revision, not a published movement specification.

What does the GPHG award establish?
The MARK 1 Möbius received the Audacity Prize at the 25th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. It is a notable recognition milestone for a young independent brand and for a debut model with an unconventional mechanical concept. An award recognizes the watch in the context of that competition; it does not establish long-term reliability, delivery performance or service outcomes.
How much of the Möbius is made in-house?
As reported by Wada for Hodinkee in August 2026, Fam al Hut had a workshop in Taicang with capabilities for design, prototyping, machining, finishing, assembly and quality control. The report describes roughly 20 people working at the facility, attributing that figure to Lukas Young (the spelling used in that report). It also notes that cases, sapphire crystals and other components still come from outside suppliers. The evidence therefore supports a picture of a brand building substantial workshop capability, not a claim that the entire watch is made in-house.

Youn told Hodinkee, “We didn’t originally plan to have our own factory.” The report presents the workshop as part of the company’s evolving effort to develop and produce the watch. Its existence and capabilities are relevant manufacturing context, but a workshop visit cannot establish how the finished watches will perform after years of ownership.
What remains unknown to a prospective buyer?
The available reporting does not establish current production totals, delivery timing, live price, current preorder status, named retailer stockists or Amazon availability. In the 2025 interview, the founders said they intended to remain small, produce fewer than a few hundred pieces annually, and sell directly as well as through selected retailers in Europe, Asia and North America. That was a statement of intent at the time, not confirmation of current output or distribution.
Hodinkee’s August 2026 report says the company was still revising the MARK 1 movement after its award and emphasizes that watches still needed to reach collectors and demonstrate reliability over years. For anyone assessing the watch, the distinction is important: the award, design and workshop are established parts of the story, while long-term owner experience is not yet established by the reporting cited here.
