Favre-Leuba’s history starts with a documented mention of Abraham Favre as an independent watchmaker in Le Locle in 1737—not proof that one unchanged company has operated continuously ever since. The Favre-Leuba partnership formed in 1814; the brand later became known for watches built around exploration, including the Bivouac altimeter, Deep Blue diver, and Bathy depth gauge. After the quartz-era disruption and changes in ownership, Favre-Leuba relaunched in 2024 and continues to connect current collections with its historic designs.
What does 1737 mean in Favre-Leuba’s history?
Favre-Leuba’s official timeline says Abraham Favre was first mentioned as an independent watchmaker in Le Locle in an official document dated 13 March 1737. Europa Star’s archival account also places his watchmaking business there on that date. It is a documented starting point for the founder and his watchmaking activity, not evidence that a company under the present name—or an unchanged corporate entity—has existed continuously since 1737. Favre-Leuba’s official history preserves the brand’s chronology.
When did the Favre-Leuba partnership begin?
Europa Star dates the partnership between Henry-Auguste Favre and watch merchant Auguste Leuba to 1814. That is the point at which the two family names came together, distinct from Abraham Favre’s earlier documentary mention. The firm later relocated to Geneva and developed international trade, including business in India.
Favre-Leuba’s official timeline highlights Fritz Favre’s 1865 trip to India and describes the brand as the first Swiss watch brand to enter the country. That “first” is the brand’s own claim; it should not be treated as an independently settled ranking. In 1948, according to the official history, Favre-Leuba acquired Bovet’s name and manufacturing facilities, and for a short period made watches marked Favre Leuba Bovet.

The FL101 manufacture calibre
In 1955, Favre-Leuba introduced the FL101, a manufacture calibre used in the Sea Chief, Sea King, and Sea Raider. It marked a technical chapter before the brand’s 1960s watches increasingly emphasized practical instruments for divers and mountaineers.
Water Deep, Deep Blue, and Bathy
Europa Star identifies the Water Deep, introduced in 1960, as Favre-Leuba’s first diver’s watch. Deep Blue followed in 1964; Europa Star gives its water resistance as 200 metres. Bathy, introduced in 1968, displayed both dive time and current depth, extending the idea of a dive watch from timekeeping toward underwater measurement. Any “first” or world-record-style description of these models should be understood as attributed to the brand or the cited account, rather than an independently adjudicated industry distinction.

The Bivouac and altitude measurement
Introduced in 1962, the Bivouac paired a mechanical movement with an aneroid barometer. By tracking atmospheric pressure, it could support altitude readings as well as pressure measurement—an unusual function for a wristwatch and a practical fit for mountaineering. Europa Star recounts mountaineer Walter Bonatti wearing a Bivouac on notable Alpine ascents, including an ascent of Pointe Whymper at 4,196 m with Michel Vaucher. The model’s importance lies in its role as a portable instrument, not merely its association with expeditions.
What happened to Favre-Leuba during the quartz era?
Quartz technology disrupted the traditional mechanical-watch business, and Favre-Leuba was affected. The brand’s official timeline says the family was compelled to sell it in the 1980s and that ownership changed multiple times afterward. The sources available do not establish a complete owner-by-owner chronology, so the transition is best described as a period of disruption and changing ownership rather than a single, fully documented break.

Europa Star’s archive feature recounts historical production figures from earlier publications: a 1964 article reported factory capacity of around 300,000 pieces, while a 1994 Europa Star piece noted 20,000 pieces. These are historical capacity and production-era figures as reported through Europa Star’s archive—not audited sales, a continuous series, or current output. Specialist publication Fratello later characterized the brand as never having truly disappeared, though it was out of sight for years.

Favre-Leuba dates its relaunch to 2024, with the Chief, Deep Raider Revival, and Sea Sky among the key models or collections identified at that point. The modern watches draw on historic names and design lines, but a revival is not a vintage original: its movement, dimensions, construction, and performance must be assessed by the specific current reference rather than assumed from the older model it recalls.

In a September 2025 overview, Fratello discussed the Deep Raider Revival, Sea Sky Chronograph Revival, and Chief Chronograph as contemporary watches drawing from the brand’s past. Favre-Leuba’s current homepage lists Harpoon Revival, 1737, Chief, Sea Sky, and Deep Raider collections. The brand’s press page reports that Harpoon Revival and the 1737 collection were introduced in 2026, followed by dated announcements concerning Harpoon and Deep Raider collaborations. Collections and availability can change; for current references and regional stock, consult the official collection pages and brand newsroom.
The historic models remain useful reference points for understanding the present range: the Bivouac was an altitude instrument, Deep Blue a diver, and Bathy a depth-measuring watch. Modern watches may inherit names or visual cues, but their specifications belong to their own references. For example, dimensions, water resistance, and movement details should be checked on the relevant official model page rather than inferred from a vintage predecessor.
