Some individual Apple Watch health features are FDA-authorized, but Apple Watch is not a general-purpose FDA-approved medical device. The FDA has cleared or authorized specific functions—such as ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, AFib History, sleep-apnea notifications, and hypertension notifications—for narrowly defined uses. They can support screening or follow-up, but they do not replace a clinician, diagnostic testing, or a blood-pressure cuff.
What “FDA approved” means for Apple Watch
“FDA-approved Apple Watch” is an imprecise shorthand. The FDA’s decision applies to a particular software feature and intended use, not every sensor, health metric, or function on the watch.
- De Novo authorization establishes a classification for a novel device considered low to moderate risk. Apple’s ECG app received De Novo authorization under DEN180044 on September 11, 2018. FDA De Novo database.
- 510(k) clearance means the FDA found a device substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device. Several Apple features use this pathway.
- PMA approval is a distinct, more demanding pathway generally used for higher-risk devices; it is not the pathway described for the Apple features below.
FDA authorization does not mean a feature detects every episode, diagnoses a condition, or is accurate for every user. It does not make Apple Watch a substitute for a clinical ECG, prescribed rhythm monitor, sleep study, or validated blood-pressure measurement.
Which Apple Watch features have FDA authorization?
The FDA decisions below apply to the named features and their specified indications. Model, software, and regional availability are separate questions.

| Feature | FDA pathway and record | What it is for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECG app | De Novo, DEN180044; decision September 11, 2018 | Records a user-initiated, single-lead ECG that can show patterns suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib). | Not a 12-lead ECG, continuous monitor, heart-attack test, or detector for every arrhythmia. |
| Irregular Rhythm Notifications | 510(k) clearances, including K231173 | Passively looks for pulse patterns suggestive of AFib while the user is still. | May miss episodes; no notification does not rule out AFib. The cited indication is not for people already diagnosed with AFib. |
| AFib History | 510(k), K213971; FDA sensor-based list records June 3, 2022 | Estimates the percentage of time a person with an existing AFib diagnosis may have been in AFib during past watch wear. | Retrospective burden estimate for adults 22 and older with diagnosed AFib; not a diagnostic alert or replacement for prescribed monitoring. |
| Sleep Apnea Notifications | K240929; FDA list records decision September 13, 2024 | Assesses patterns associated with possible sleep apnea and may notify of elevated risk. | Not a diagnosis, apnea monitor, or substitute for polysomnography or clinician-directed evaluation. |
| Hypertension Notifications | 510(k), K250507; decision September 11, 2025 | Analyzes heart data over time for patterns associated with hypertension. | Does not measure blood pressure or provide systolic/diastolic values; a cuff is needed for actual readings. |
FDA records: K231173 clearance letter, K213971 clearance letter, FDA sensor-based digital-health list, FDA sleep-apnea risk-assessment classification, and K250507 510(k) record.
What each authorized feature can—and cannot—tell you
ECG: a spot recording, not continuous heart monitoring
The ECG app uses electrodes on compatible watches to record a single-lead tracing when the user starts a recording. The result can be exported as a PDF and shared with a clinician. Apple describes it as a way to check for signs of AFib, not a universal diagnostic test. Apple Health.
A single-lead tracing is not equivalent to a clinical 12-lead ECG. It does not continuously watch the heart, detect every rhythm problem, or diagnose a heart attack. Symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath need appropriate medical attention regardless of an ECG result.
Irregular Rhythm Notifications: an opportunistic AFib signal
This background feature analyzes pulse data collected when the wearer is still; it is different from manually starting an ECG. The FDA indication says it will not detect every episode and is not intended to replace traditional diagnosis or treatment. A lack of an alert is not evidence that AFib or another condition is absent. The cited indication also says it is not intended for people previously diagnosed with AFib. FDA K231173 documentation.

AFib History: trend information for people already diagnosed
AFib History serves a different group from irregular-rhythm notifications: adults aged 22 or older who have already been diagnosed with AFib. It estimates AFib burden retrospectively from periods when the watch was worn and shows trends over time. It is not an individual episode alert, definitive measurement of every episode, or replacement for treatment or clinician-prescribed monitoring. FDA K213971 documentation.
Sleep Apnea Notifications: risk, not diagnosis
The feature looks for patterns associated with possible sleep apnea and may prompt the wearer to seek advice. An alert is not a diagnosis; no alert does not establish that sleep apnea is absent. The FDA’s classification for this type of risk-assessment device says it is not intended to replace traditional diagnostic methods such as polysomnography, assist a clinician in making a diagnosis, or function as an apnea monitor. FDA classification.
Hypertension Notifications: a reason to measure, not a blood-pressure reading
Apple says the feature reviews heart data from the previous 30 days to identify patterns associated with hypertension. It does not take a blood-pressure reading and cannot show systolic or diastolic numbers. After a notification, Apple recommends using a third-party blood-pressure cuff for seven days and discussing the results with a healthcare professional. Apple’s setup and feature instructions.
Apple says not everyone with hypertension will receive a notification. The feature does not detect heart attacks, stroke, blood clots, AFib, heart failure, or high cholesterol. It cannot diagnose or manage hypertension.

Features that should not be treated as FDA-authorized medical tools
Apple Watch also offers consumer wellness and safety functions, including heart-rate displays and alerts, activity metrics, sleep tracking, Vitals, wrist-temperature sensing, cycle tracking, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, medications, and mindfulness. Their presence on the watch does not put them in the same regulatory category as the specific features listed above.
Blood Oxygen should also be considered separately. Apple’s August 2025 U.S. update described a redesigned experience for certain U.S. Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units affected by a legal dispute: sensor data are calculated on the paired iPhone and displayed in the Health app after the specified software update. Apple said the change did not affect units previously purchased with the original feature or units purchased outside the United States. Availability and experience therefore depend on the unit and region; do not assume this is a hospital-grade pulse oximeter or an FDA-cleared diagnostic tool. Apple’s U.S. Blood Oxygen update.
Which current Apple Watch models support the features?
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. comparison page lists Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 as current models. The table reflects Apple’s model comparison; feature access can still depend on region, software, and regulatory availability. Check Apple’s current comparison page before buying.
| Current U.S. model | ECG | Irregular-rhythm notifications | AFib History | Sleep-apnea notifications | Hypertension notifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Yes | Yes | Yes, for eligible users | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | No | Yes | Yes, for eligible users | Yes | No |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Yes | Yes | Yes, for eligible users | Yes | Yes |
For the current lineup, Series 11 is the least expensive model listed with ECG and hypertension notifications; SE 3 is not a substitute if either of those features is the reason for buying. The Ultra 3 adds rugged/outdoor hardware, not a more comprehensive diagnosis. Apple’s U.S. buying page listed Series 11 from $399, SE 3 from $249, and Ultra 3 from $799 when checked August 18, 2026; prices can change.

Older models may support some features, but support is not inferred from the current-model table. Apple has described hypertension notifications for Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later with required software; confirm current model, software, and regional availability in Apple’s documentation before relying on that compatibility statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Availability, setup, and data depend on more than the watch
Feature availability can vary by country or region, hardware model, purchase location, software, paired iPhone, and regulatory status. A feature authorized in the United States is not automatically available worldwide. Blood Oxygen’s U.S. unit-specific change is one example.
For hypertension notifications, Apple’s setup path is: Health app on iPhone > profile icon > Health Checklist > Hypertension Notifications. Confirm age and whether hypertension has previously been diagnosed, then follow the prompts. Apple says the feature is unavailable on Apple Watch SE and cannot be enabled when an active pregnancy is logged in Health. These restrictions are specific to this feature, not a general statement about other Apple Watch functions. Consult Apple’s support instructions for current requirements.
Apple Watch uses a paired iPhone for setup and Health app features; consult the current model and feature instructions for exact software and compatibility requirements. ECG results can be exported as a PDF to share, but the watch does not automatically send every reading or alert to a doctor. Apple’s Instructions for Use provide feature-specific labeling and should be checked for the exact model and region.

What to do after an alert—or when symptoms are urgent
After an ECG or irregular-rhythm notification
Save or share the ECG PDF if you recorded one, and contact a healthcare professional to interpret the result in context. A notification is a possible signal, not a diagnosis; a normal or absent result does not rule out a problem.
After a hypertension notification
Use a third-party cuff to take and record readings for seven days, then discuss those results with a healthcare professional. If you need actual blood-pressure numbers for ongoing monitoring, use a validated upper-arm cuff rather than relying on the watch notification feature.
After a sleep-apnea notification
Discuss the alert and relevant symptoms with a clinician, who can determine whether a sleep study or other evaluation is appropriate. Do not treat the notification as a diagnosis or begin or change treatment solely on its basis.
For possible emergency symptoms, do not wait for the watch
Call emergency services for chest pain, pressure, tightness, or suspected heart-attack symptoms. Apple explicitly says Apple Watch cannot detect heart attacks. Seek urgent care for other severe or sudden symptoms as appropriate, whatever the watch displays. Apple’s hypertension support page.
Is Apple Watch a good health purchase for your needs?
- General wellness and safety: A watch may be useful if you want activity, sleep, safety, and selected heart-health features integrated with an iPhone.
- ECG access: Choose a compatible model with ECG, such as Series 11 or Ultra 3 in Apple’s current U.S. lineup. The ECG is a spot recording, not continuous clinical monitoring.
- Possible AFib screening: Irregular-rhythm notifications can surface a pattern for follow-up, but they neither rule out AFib nor replace diagnostic evaluation.
- Known AFib: AFib History is designed for eligible adults with an existing diagnosis; coordinate its use with the clinician managing your care.
- Sleep-apnea concern: Sleep-apnea notifications may provide a reason to seek evaluation, but a watch cannot confirm the condition.
- Blood-pressure readings or hypertension management: Buy or use a validated upper-arm cuff and follow clinical advice. An Apple Watch alone cannot provide the numbers needed to measure blood pressure.
If your main goal is a blood-pressure reading, do not pay more for an Apple Watch expecting it to measure pressure. If you want a broader wearable and understand the limits, its FDA-authorized features can be useful adjuncts—not replacements for medical care.
