Some OnePlus Watch 2 and Watch 2R owners report sharply shorter battery life after Wear OS 5 and OxygenOS Watch updates. That is a real reason to investigate, but the reports do not show that every watch is affected or that an update permanently damaged the battery. Watch 3 owners have described a separate, suspected background-sync problem. Your model, region, software build, settings and battery-use pattern all matter.
Which OnePlus watches have battery-drain reports?
OnePlus Watch 2 and Watch 2R
Community posts describe battery life falling after Wear OS 5 updates, with outcomes ranging from a smaller reduction to less than a day in some cases. Android Central also reported serious Watch 2 battery complaints after the Wear OS 5 update in January 2026. These are reports, not controlled tests or proof that every device has the same fault. Builds vary by model and region. One documented Watch 2R EU package is OPWWE234_11_A.172, with Wear OS 5.0, OxygenOS Watch V7.0 and a November 1, 2025 security patch. Its listed changes include Camera Remote Control, VOOC charging visuals, updated system icons and stability/performance improvements; the changelog does not say it fixes battery drain. Community users associated an earlier build 169 with drain, but that is not an official OnePlus diagnosis. OnePlus Watch 3
Watch 3 reports should not be folded into the Watch 2/2R Wear OS 5 reports. Some users describe Google Play Services and related contact-storage processes repeatedly syncing, with warmth and drain reported at roughly 4–7% per hour during affected periods. Original OnePlus Watch
The original OnePlus Watch runs a different platform, so Wear OS 5 reports do not apply to it. OnePlus lists up to 14 days of battery life for that model under its specified test scenario; this figure is not directly comparable with the Wear OS watches. Original OnePlus Watch specifications
How to tell whether your battery drain is abnormal
There is no OnePlus-certified percentage threshold that diagnoses a faulty update. Compare like with like: the same watch, settings and type of use. GPS workouts, screen use, LTE, Wi-Fi, music playback and continuous health monitoring can all change endurance.
- Possibly temporary: Drain rises for a day or two after a major update, then settles as apps and services finish updating or indexing.
- Concerning: Battery life stays markedly below your previous normal—such as a drop from several days to around one or two days under similar use.
- Severe: The watch loses several percentage points per hour while idle, becomes warm without an obvious workload, or cannot last through a normal day.
- Escalate promptly: Drain continues in Power Saver or Airplane Mode, percentage readings collapse rapidly, or repeated low-battery warnings appear.
A OnePlus Community support post suggests charging fully, leaving the watch connected for additional time, restarting and observing it for two or three days after an update. That is community guidance, not a formal Watch-specific technical bulletin. Community guidance on post-update optimization

Check your model and software build first
Before changing settings or resetting the watch, record its model and size, region, Wear OS version, OxygenOS Watch version, build number and security-patch date. Also note the OHealth app version, paired phone model and operating-system version, and when the drain began. Menu labels differ by model and region, so use the watch’s Settings app and look under software, system or device information for those version details. Check OHealth for a pending watch or app update as well.

The older OnePlus Watch manual describes updates through the companion app’s device-management area and notes that Bluetooth disconnects during installation. Newer Wear OS models may use different labels and screens. OnePlus Watch user manual
Troubleshoot in order, starting with low-risk checks
1. Restart and allow a short settling period
- Charge the watch to 100% and leave it charging for a reasonable additional period.
- Restart it, then use it normally for 48–72 hours.
- Record the battery percentage at consistent times. A brief recovery suggests temporary optimization or synchronization; persistent drain needs further diagnosis.
A restart can stop a stuck service, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Do not repeatedly drain a lithium-ion battery to zero in an attempt to “calibrate” it.

2. Inspect battery usage and temperature
Find the battery-usage screen in Settings; the exact path and wording can vary by software version. Look for unusually high use while idle from Google Play Services, OHealth-related services, fitness or GPS processes, third-party watch faces, music, maps or notification-heavy apps. On Watch 3, note whether contact or storage services appear unusually active. A process using substantial power after a workout does not by itself indicate a fault; look for a repeated pattern when the watch is idle.
Warmth during charging or GPS use can be expected. Persistent heat while idle is not. If the case is separating, the watch is swollen, it smells abnormal or charging fails, stop using it and contact OnePlus rather than continuing software tests.
3. Run a controlled feature test
For a 24-hour comparison, fully charge and restart the watch, use an official watch face, and record the battery after 6, 12 and 24 hours. First test with optional power-intensive features reduced; then repeat under your usual settings. Change one setting at a time where practical, so the result is useful.

- Temporarily turn off Always-on Display and raise-to-wake.
- Reduce continuous blood-oxygen, heart-rate, stress or respiratory monitoring.
- Turn off Wi-Fi when not needed; disable LTE or cellular connectivity if applicable.
- Avoid GPS workouts, music playback and unnecessary notifications during the baseline test.
- Remove animated or frequently refreshing third-party watch faces.
If battery life improves when one feature is disabled, that points to a setting or service interaction; it does not prove the update physically damaged the battery.
4. Update companion and watch apps
Check for updates to OHealth, Google Play Services, Google Play system components, watch apps and watch faces. A mismatch between newly updated watch software and an outdated companion app is a reasonable troubleshooting possibility, not a documented root cause in these reports.
5. Re-pair only after simpler checks
Some Watch 2R users reported improvement after disconnecting and re-pairing through the companion app; others said a reset did not help. The outcome is inconsistent. 6. Factory-reset as a last software step
Capture the build number and battery-use evidence before resetting, and synchronize important data. Resetting clears watch data and settings; the path varies by generation, but the older manual describes the option in the watch’s Settings/System area. OnePlus Watch user manual
- Pair the watch again and update OHealth and core watch apps.
- Start with an official watch face and do not immediately restore every third-party app.
- Test for at least one or two normal battery cycles, then add features and apps back if endurance appears normal.
If drain returns before third-party apps or faces are restored, that makes a firmware, account or device-specific issue more plausible. It still does not identify the cause by itself.

Contact support if severe drain continues after a restart and a clean-configuration test, if the watch remains poor after a factory reset, or if it is persistently hot while idle. A clean reset that does not improve battery life makes temporary post-update optimization a less likely explanation. Use the official OnePlus support portal for regional support and service routes.
Provide the model and serial number, region and purchase date, software and build versions, battery percentages at consistent times, battery-usage screenshots, temperature observations, and whether the problem persists in Power Saver or Airplane Mode. Include the result of any reset, paired phone and OHealth version, and recently installed watch faces or apps. If a Watch 3 repeatedly shows Google Play Services or contact-storage processes consuming power, escalating the issue is preferable to repeatedly disabling essential system components; user reports describe resets or cache-clearing as temporary relief in some cases.

Do not assume that every OnePlus Watch update causes battery drain, and do not block updates indefinitely. Before installing, note your current battery life and software version so you have a baseline. Install when the watch is sufficiently charged and connected to the companion app, and avoid scheduling the update immediately before travel, a long workout or a night when you need sleep tracking. Afterward, check endurance over the next few days and look for a newer build before considering repeated resets or unofficial downgrade methods.
Battery trouble is not always an update bug
- GPS, LTE or a demanding workout: Compare against a similar-use day rather than a mostly idle day.
- A third-party watch face: Test with an official face; complications and frequent refreshes can add drain.
- Settings and connectivity: AOD, health sensors, Wi-Fi and repeated phone-connection attempts can affect battery use.
- Charging or battery condition: A poor charging connection can create the impression that the watch is not holding charge. A sudden post-update change points first to software or background activity, but an aged or faulty battery remains possible—especially if drain continues after a clean reset.
Software-related drain can make a watch warm, but that is not proof of permanent battery-capacity loss. The available reports do not establish that an update permanently reduced battery capacity. Stop troubleshooting and seek service for swelling, unusual persistent heat, odor, visible damage or charging failure.
