The Grand Seiko SBGC275 is a 2024 limited-edition Sport Collection chronograph GMT built around an angle-dependent dial, automatic Spring Drive caliber 9R96, and a high-intensity titanium case and bracelet. Grand Seiko calls it a 9R Spring Drive 20th-anniversary edition; its stated design inspiration is a summer sunrise over Japan’s Hotaka mountain range, not Tokyo.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGC275?
Grand Seiko announced the SBGC275 on April 9, 2024, as a worldwide limited edition of 700 pieces marking 20 years of the 9R Spring Drive series. It combines a chronograph that measures up to 12 hours with a GMT hand for a second time zone. The watch was announced for Grand Seiko boutiques and select retail partners in July 2024; that is a historical launch window, not confirmation of current availability. Grand Seiko’s 2024 announcement describes the model and its specifications.
What makes the SBGC275 dial change color?
Grand Seiko says the dial uses its patented Optical Multilayer Coating process, which applies several nanoscale films by physical vapor deposition. The resulting hue varies with the viewing angle. The company presents both the shifting color and the textured, warmer tones as an expression of brief light on the Hotaka peaks at summer sunrise, and as a new manufacturing capability. The dial’s mane-like pattern is also part of the brand’s lion design story.
Grand Seiko identifies the lion as its symbol since its first watch in 1960. Its design description links the SBGC275’s angular case, claw-like hairline-finished lugs and contrasting Zaratsu-polished surfaces to that motif. These are the manufacturer’s explanations of the design. “Tokyo Lion” in the supplied title should not be read as the stated location or inspiration for the dial.

How accurate is the SBGC275 Spring Drive movement?
The watch uses automatic Spring Drive Chronograph GMT caliber 9R96. Grand Seiko gives its stated accuracy as ±10 seconds per month (±0.5 seconds per day), with a 72-hour power reserve and 50 jewels. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results.
- GMT: A dedicated GMT hand indicates a second time zone.
- Chronograph: Measures elapsed time up to 12 hours.
- Movement detail: The oscillating weight carries an 18k gold Grand Seiko lion emblem.
Grand Seiko describes 9R96 as a specially adjusted version of caliber 9R86. For the 9R86, the brand states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month; it gives the 9R96 in the SBGC275 the tighter ±10-second monthly figure. Those published figures should not be mistaken for a guarantee of an individual watch’s observed performance.
How big and thick is the Grand Seiko SBGC275?
Grand Seiko lists the case at 44.5 mm in diameter and 16.8 mm thick. That is substantial on paper, so checking the watch on your own wrist is more useful than assuming it will fit comfortably from its specifications alone.
The case and bracelet use high-intensity titanium. Grand Seiko says this material is about 30% lighter than stainless steel; the comparison is the manufacturer’s stated material figure, not a measurement of the complete SBGC275 against a steel watch.

Grand Seiko announced the SBGC253 in 2023 as a regular-collection Sport Collection Spring Drive Chronograph GMT. The available specifications support a focused comparison, not an assumption that the two watches are otherwise identical.

Grand Seiko’s 2023 SBGC253 specifications and 2024 SBGC275 announcement provide the figures above. The clearest documented differences are the 9R96’s tighter stated accuracy, limited-edition status, and the SBGC275’s specific dial and anniversary narrative. The sources do not establish a current price comparison or current resale values.
What did the SBGC275 cost at launch, and is it still available?
Grand Seiko’s April 9, 2024 announcement listed an approximate US recommended retail price of $13,400 and stated that the model would reach boutiques and select retail partners worldwide in July 2024. The company noted that its specifications and price were current as of the announcement and subject to change. That dated US launch price does not establish today’s retail price, stock, or resale value.
