The Ulysse Nardin Freak S Enamel keeps the Freak’s movement-led, crownless way of displaying time, but gives its rotating hour discs a vivid traditional finish: turquoise-blue or ruby-red enamel. Each color is limited to 50 pieces, according to Ulysse Nardin. It is a meeting of elaborate mechanics and handcraft—not a return to a conventional dial and hands.
What makes the Freak S Enamel different?
The Freak has long made the movement part of the time display. As Monochrome Watches journalist Rebecca Doulton puts it, “With no dial, hands, or crown, the Freak upturned conventional time displays, relying instead on the movement’s rotation to tell the time.” The Freak S Enamel preserves that approach: moving components and discs indicate the hours and minutes.
The new element is enamel on the rotating hour discs. Ulysse Nardin says the turquoise and ruby-red discs are made entirely in-house at Donzé Cadrans, its dedicated enamelling workshop beside the manufacture in Le Locle. The enamel is not simply applied to an otherwise static decorative dial; the discs are integrated into the moving display.
How does its unusual time display work?
Calibre UN-251 powers a flying carousel that indicates minutes and a lower disc that indicates hours. Doulton’s Monochrome Watches first look, published October 16, 2025, explains that the carousel completes one rotation per hour while the lower disc completes one rotation every 12 hours. She also describes six gear planes and the patented Grinder automatic winding system.

The official turquoise model specifications describe the movement as self-winding, with two 20-degree-inclined oversized oscillators and silicon balance wheels. A vertical differential with ball bearings connects the oscillators, and the movement uses a DIAMonSIL escapement. Ulysse Nardin lists a 72-hour power reserve.

How does the enamel meet the mechanics?
According to Doulton’s article, the discs are guilloché flinqué: hand-engraved patterns beneath translucent enamel. She identifies their base as 18k white gold. That account describes how the enamel hour discs are constructed; Ulysse Nardin separately confirms their in-house production at Donzé Cadrans.

The contrast is the point. A craft associated with patient, traditional surface decoration is placed on components that rotate as part of an unconventional mechanical display. The enamel changes the appearance of the Freak without changing its movement-led premise.

Where does the Freak S Enamel sit in the Freak lineage?
Ulysse Nardin dates the Freak’s introduction to 2001. The collection is known for its crownless design, movement-based time display and early use of silicon in a mechanical watch. Doulton credits watchmaker Ludwig Oeschlin, working under Rolf Schnyder’s leadership, with the original Freak; she places the Freak S in 2022 and notes its pair of inclined silicon balance wheels.
The Freak S Enamel extends that history without turning the watch into a conventional dial-and-hands design. The original made the movement the display; here, enamel gives the moving hour discs a vivid surface while leaving them integral to that display.
