The Praesidus x The Watch Observer A-11 Type 44 is a 250-piece, hand-wound military-style watch with a black embossed dial, polished glaive hands and a 38 mm case. It draws on the World War II A-11 specification without reproducing an original military watch. Whether it can still be bought is unclear: The Watch Observer’s shop marks it sold out, while Praesidus’s product page shows conflicting stock indicators.
What sets this collaboration apart?
The edition pairs Praesidus’s A-11 Type 44 platform with design input from The Watch Observer and the involvement of aviation specialist Gregory Pons. Praesidus presents it as a tribute to World War II aircrews and the 533rd Bomb Squadron. The distinguishing choices are its black embossed dial, polished glaive hands, 38 mm polished case and the squadron insignia engraved on the caseback.
The original A-11 was a U.S. military watch specification built around practical legibility. Fratello identifies it as FSSC 88-W-800 and names Waltham, Elgin and Bulova among the American firms that produced watches to the specification. This modern Type 44 takes that lineage as a reference; its size, finish, hands and luminous treatment are contemporary design choices, not evidence of a historically exact reproduction. Fratello’s introduction and Europa Star’s overview describe the historical reference and the modern styling.
Dial and case
The dial is black, with embossed Arabic numerals filled with Old Radium Super-LumiNova. Its polished sword-shaped glaive hands depart from the leaf hands associated with historic A-11 examples. The stainless-steel case is polished rather than presented as a direct copy of period military-watch finishing. Fratello reports dimensions of 38 mm across, 45 mm lug-to-lug and 13 mm thick.

The 533rd Bomb Squadron emblem
The caseback engraving depicts the 533rd Bomb Squadron insignia. The graphic combines a skull, a Roman-style or legionnaire’s helmet and a bomb or missile form; Praesidus describes a missile piercing a skull wearing a Roman legionnaire’s helmet, while Europa Star describes a bomb in the background. Europa Star reports that the squadron participated in Big Week, February 20–25, 1944, and supported the Normandy invasion in June 1944 by attacking bridges and airfields. Fratello places the squadron in the 381st Bombardment Group and notes its B-17 operations from England. These are historical details reported by those publications, not claims that the watch itself is an original service item.

How does it compare with a regular Type 44?
The practical distinction is less about a wholly different watch architecture than this edition’s particular mix of styling and package. The collaboration uses one 38 mm case size, a black embossed dial, glaive hands, the 533rd Bomb Squadron caseback and two included wearing options. Its hand-wound Landeron 21 will appeal to buyers who prefer winding a watch themselves; it is a different ownership routine from an automatic movement.
The regular Type 44 family has appeared in other sizes and variants, but current catalog availability is not established here. Treat this comparison as one between design directions, not as confirmation that another Type 44 configuration can currently be ordered.
