The Seiko Presage SPB441 marks a specific milestone: the 1924 wristwatch that first carried the Seiko name on its dial. It is a modern, limited-edition homage rather than a literal reissue, pairing a compact enamel-dial design with a central seconds hand and a 24-hour subdial.
What the SPB441 commemorates
Seiko distinguishes this watch from the Laurel, its first wristwatch, introduced in 1913. The SPB441 instead looks back to 1924, when a wristwatch first bore “Seiko” on its dial and the Seiko brand began. Seiko says founder Kintaro Hattori’s guiding philosophy was: “Always one step ahead of the rest.” Seiko’s product page presents that history as the concept behind the limited edition.
The watch is named the Presage Kintaro Hattori Limited Edition, reference SPB441. Seiko announced a run of 1,000 pieces in November 2023, with availability beginning in January 2024. The Canadian launch announcement gives the production count and specifications.
How closely does it resemble the 1924 watch?
The SPB441 takes cues from the historical watch: a round case, box-shaped crystal, vintage-style lettering and numerals, white enamel dial, blue hands, and pull-through strap. But it changes the time display. The original had small seconds; the SPB441 has a central seconds hand and a 24-hour subdial. Monochrome’s 14 November 2023 first look likewise describes it as something other than a one-to-one recreation.

- Seiko Presage Cocktail Time U.S. Special Creation
- Special creation celebrating craft beer cocktails
- Fine mechanical watchmaking from Japan
- Automatic with manual winding capability
- Inspired by the Beer Julep cocktail, the gloss-finish gold dial is vertically gradated to suggest the sparkling hues of a fresh pour, while the pressed pattern evokes its bubbling effervescence
That distinction matters if you are drawn to the old watch’s small-seconds layout. One commenter put the preference plainly: “I hate the 24 hour sub dial and I would much prefer a proper small second hand.” That is an individual reaction, not evidence of a broader consensus. The subdial is a functional design choice on the modern watch, not a reproduction of the original display.
Dial, case and strap details
Monochrome describes the dial as glossy white enamel, with black-printed Breguet-style numerals and blued hands. Seiko credits master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and colleagues with the enamel-dial work. The result combines traditional styling with a contemporary layout.
The stainless-steel case measures 35.0 mm across and 12.3 mm thick. It has a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inside, a screw case back, 5 bar water resistance and a stated magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. These are Seiko’s published specifications, not independent test results. The compact diameter is worth noting alongside the 12.3 mm thickness: the watch is small across the wrist, but not especially thin on paper.

The leather strap is a pull-through design fitted to movable lugs. Seiko says the leather comes from a tannery certified by the Leather Working Group. The crown carries the S mark, and the case back features the S trademark that Hattori registered for Seikosha in 1900, along with his name and a statement of his philosophy. A matching pin badge is included in the box.

Inside is Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R5H. The manufacturer lists 24 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (six beats per second), and a 72-hour power reserve. The movement drives the central seconds hand and the 24-hour subdial. These published figures describe the specification; they do not establish real-world accuracy or performance.

These snapshots show why a limited production run does not translate into one reliable current price or a single availability picture. Before buying, check the seller’s location, condition, included box and papers, warranty terms, and whether the listing is new or pre-owned. A listing’s asking price is not proof of what a watch has sold for.

The SPB441 is most compelling for someone who values the link to Seiko’s 1924 brand-name milestone, a small-diameter case, and the visual character of an enamel dial. It is less suited to a buyer seeking a faithful historical layout: the modern central seconds and 24-hour indication depart from the original’s small seconds. Its 5 bar water-resistance rating is a published specification, not a claim about suitability for every activity or condition.
