What the Compteur de Tierces was—and what the 1816 recalls
Louis Moinet says he began the Compteur de Tierces in 1815 and completed it in 1816. The instrument was made for astronomical observation, with a central hand measuring sixtieths of a second. The brand presents it as the world’s first chronograph; that priority claim should be understood as Louis Moinet’s historical position, rather than a point independently established by the sources cited here. The modern watch is not a reproduction of the 19th-century instrument. Instead, it takes the original’s visual arrangement and chronograph heritage as its design starting point. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie describes the 1816 as emphasizing the legacy and aesthetic of the historic object. FHH’s 1816 listing provides an independent institutional description of the model.

Jumping elapsed-minute display
The 1816’s standout operating detail is its jumping minute counter. According to Louis Moinet, the counter advances instantaneously at the sixtieth second, so the elapsed-minute indication changes in one step rather than moving gradually. Movement specification
The hand-wound LM1816 calibre is specified by Louis Moinet as having 330 components, 34 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 48-hour power reserve. FHH also lists 330 components, 34 jewels and a 48-hour reserve, and says the movement was developed in collaboration with Concepto. A 2025 Monochrome Watches first look describes a column wheel, horizontal clutch and variable-inertia balance in the calibre. These are published specifications and descriptions, not the result of hands-on mechanical testing for this article. Monochrome’s April 2025 article gives its launch-era account.
Case, bracelet and the 2026 edition
The current official product listing specifies a 40.6 mm case in grade 5 titanium and an integrated grade 5 titanium bracelet. The case size and titanium construction give the watch a contemporary sports-watch format, while the integrated bracelet carries the case material through the design. Louis Moinet lists references LM-150.20.60 and LM-151.20.30, so a reference should be checked against the specific dial or finish before assigning it to an image or variant.

On April 20, 2026, Louis Moinet announced a new champagne-hued edition. The brand says the color extends to the bracelet’s middle links and that the chronograph hour totaliser uses Roman numerals. Those details identify that announced edition; they should not be generalized to every 1816 reference. The announcement for the 2026 edition describes its specific changes.
Water resistance and price: read the figures in context
Current Louis Moinet and FHH listings specify 50 metres of water resistance. Monochrome’s April 2025 article instead gives 30 metres. Because the published figures differ, the safest reading is to treat 50 metres as the current listing specification and the earlier 30-metre figure as a launch-era discrepancy—not as interchangeable ratings. Neither figure by itself establishes suitability for a particular activity; confirm the rating and use guidance for the exact reference with the brand or seller.
