Its appeal is the combination of a reported 39 mm diameter, 10.5 mm thickness and 46 mm lug-to-lug with 200 m water resistance, an automatic movement with a 72-hour reserve, and a wave-textured gradient dial. The proportions stand out for a capable diver; the dial is a more subjective choice.
What made the Ocean Star 39 notable?
Mido introduced the 39 mm Ocean Star for the collection’s 80th anniversary. The brand called it the first model in the line at that diameter. In his 4 July 2024 first look for Monochrome Watches, Brice Goulard reported a stainless-steel case measuring 39 mm across, 10.5 mm thick and 46 mm from lug to lug. Those dimensions give the watch a compact footprint, while the slim reported thickness helps explain its appeal to buyers who find many automatic dive watches tall or bulky.
The figures are from the 2024 review; case dimensions can vary in how brands and publications measure them. Mido’s US listing for a later special-edition reference confirms a 39 mm width and 10.5 mm average thickness, but does not provide a lug-to-lug measurement. Read the 2024 first look at Monochrome Watches and check Mido’s US product listing.
How does the case and dive specification compare with its proportions?
The compact dimensions do not come at the expense of the headline dive-watch specification: Mido states water resistance of 200 m (20 bar). The 2024 review reports a unidirectional bezel and screw-down crown, along with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Mido’s launch announcement also specifies an interchangeable bracelet with a diver extension.

For the listed US M026.907.11.041.01 configuration, Mido specifies 316L steel, double-sided anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal, a 20 mm lug width, 149 g weight and a two-year warranty. These are details for that particular listing, not a guarantee that every Ocean Star 39 release has identical accessories or weight. The 20 mm width is useful when looking at straps, but width alone does not establish that a third-party strap’s attachment or quick-change system will fit. Mido’s Canadian listing shows Ocean Star 39 straps in 20 mm widths; verify compatibility with the exact reference before ordering: Mido Canada’s Ocean Star 39 listing.
What movement powers it?
The Ocean Star 39 uses Mido Caliber 72, identified in the 2024 review as based on ETA A31.111. The review gives a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour and a 72-hour power reserve; Mido’s US listing for the .01 special-edition reference also states a 72-hour reserve. Mido specifies a Nivachron balance spring, which the brand describes as anti-magnetic.

A three-day reserve can be convenient if the watch is taken off for a weekend: it may still be running when picked up again, depending on how fully wound it was and how it was used. It does not mean the watch will keep running for 72 hours in every circumstance.
What is the dial like?
The original range paired an embossed, undulating surface with a gradient effect. Goulard described the blue version as fading from black to navy, with white luminous markers and hands, a date at 3 o’clock and a two-tone bezel. The 2024 range also included a black-and-grey version and a sand dial with PVD-gold details. The dial treatment is a defining visual feature, not a neutral choice: readers commenting on the first look included both interest in the fade-and-wave combination and the view that it felt over-decorated for a diver. Those comments are individual reactions, not a measure of wider buyer opinion.

Colour names and descriptions cannot fully convey how the relief and gradient interact in person. If the dial is central to your decision, compare photographs of the exact colour and reference rather than assuming all versions have the same appearance.

It is worth considering if you want an automatic dive-style watch with 200 m stated water resistance but prefer a smaller-diameter, thinner case than many divers. The strongest case for it is the combination of the reported 39 mm by 10.5 mm case, 46 mm lug-to-lug and long-reserve Caliber 72. The main design question is whether the wave relief and gradient make the dial more engaging or busier than you want.

If you are comparing alternatives, weigh the full fit rather than diameter alone: thickness, lug-to-lug length, crown and bezel setup, movement and reserve, bracelet or strap fit, colour preference, and local price and availability all matter. The 46 mm lug-to-lug figure is especially useful alongside the diameter when estimating how the watch may sit on your wrist, though wrist shape and personal fit still determine the result.
