The white-dial Speedmaster Moonwatch keeps the 42 mm Moonwatch format and makes its glossy white dial, black details and red lettering the focal point. Both use Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, so the clearest reasons to choose between them are size, design, historical connection and configuration.
What each name means
First Omega in Space: a modern tribute to the CK 2998
Omega says the CK 2998, released in 1959 as the second Speedmaster generation, was the personal watch Walter “Wally” Schirra wore on the Sigma 7 Mercury mission, launched October 3, 1962. Omega connects that history to the “First Omega in Space” nickname. The current watch revisits the CK 2998’s design language; it is a modern reissue, not an original 1959 watch. Omega marks the connection with caseback engravings reading “SPEEDMASTER”, “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”. Omega’s 2024 announcement gives its account of the model’s history and reissue.
White Speedmaster Moonwatch: a dial-led edition
The white-dial watch is a 2024 edition of the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, not a First Omega in Space variant. Omega describes the white dial as an inversion of the familiar black-and-white contrast and says its design inspiration includes astronaut suits and the white-dial ALASKA I prototype. Omega also connects the red Speedmaster lettering to ALASKA I’s protective red case; these are the brand’s stated inspirations. See Omega’s white Moonwatch launch announcement.

The First Omega in Space bracelet reference 310.30.40.50.06.001 is described in Omega’s user manual as manual-wound, with a 50-hour power reserve and 5 bar / 50 m water resistance. Those manual specifications are for that cited bracelet reference; they should not be assumed to describe every configuration or used to infer a white Moonwatch figure that Omega’s launch announcement does not state.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the First Omega in Space if…
- You prefer the published 39.70 mm case diameter over the white Moonwatch’s 42 mm format.
- You are drawn to the grey-blue dial, Alpha hands and vintage-inspired styling.
- The CK 2998 connection to Schirra and Sigma 7 matters more to you than the white-dial design.
Choose the white Moonwatch if…
- You want the 42 mm Moonwatch proportions.
- You prefer a bright, lacquered white step dial with black detailing and red lettering.
- You want one of the configurations Omega describes with a steel bracelet, micro-perforated leather strap or rubber strap.
These are preference-based comparisons from Omega’s published dimensions and design descriptions, not conclusions from a comparative wear test. Bracelet and strap choice can also affect how a watch feels in use. Before buying, confirm the exact reference, configuration, fit, local availability, seller and regional warranty; current pricing and stock are not established by Omega’s launch descriptions.
