Fitbit Ace LTE is a standalone cellular smartwatch for children ages 7 and older: a child can call approved contacts and share their location without carrying a phone. But the watch is not phone-free for the family. A parent needs a compatible smartphone and the Fitbit Ace app, and the watch’s main features require a paid Ace Pass. Most importantly, it cannot call emergency services, so it should not be a child’s only way to get help.
What Fitbit Ace LTE is—and what it isn’t
Ace LTE combines a kids’ smartwatch, a limited cellular communicator, a location device, and an activity-and-games platform. Google positions it for children ages 7 and older. It offers parent-managed accounts and approved contacts rather than the open internet, social media, or a conventional app-store experience. Google’s product introduction describes the watch’s child-focused design.
“Standalone” means the child can leave a phone at home. It does not mean the watch works without family setup, a parent’s phone, an active subscription, or network coverage. The child does not need a separate mobile plan; each watch does need its own Ace Pass.
What “always connected” means in practice
The watch has built-in 4G LTE, GPS/GNSS, and a SIM, so it can communicate away from a parent’s phone when Ace Pass is active and supported coverage is available. Location and communication still depend on power, service, device settings, and usable network or GPS conditions. Airplane mode disables calling, messaging, and location sharing. Roaming is not included, so do not assume it will stay connected abroad. Google’s Ace Pass and connectivity guidance explains service limitations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wi-Fi has a separate role: it is required for setup and game updates. Google’s compatibility guidance specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for setup and updates; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is not compatible for updates. Check Google’s Wi-Fi and compatibility requirements before pairing.
What it costs in the U.S.
As of October 3, 2026, Google Store listings put the watch at about $179.95–$179.99 in the U.S. Ace Pass is listed at $9.99 monthly or $119 annually, although Google pages and launch material have also shown $119.99 for the annual plan. Confirm the checkout price and plan terms before buying; annual promotions, including a bonus Ace Band, may have eligibility conditions. Google Store purchase and subscription listing and official specifications provide current product details.
| Option | Listed U.S. price | Approximate first-year hardware and service total |
|---|---|---|
| Watch plus monthly Ace Pass for 12 months | $179.95–$179.99 hardware; $9.99 per month | $299.83–$299.87 |
| Watch plus annual Ace Pass | $179.95–$179.99 hardware; $119 or, on some pages, $119.99 annually | $298.95–$299.98 |
The annual and monthly totals are close at those listed prices; the practical distinction is commitment and billing flexibility. Annual subscriptions automatically renew by default. Cancellation stops the next renewal, but service continues until the current billing period ends. After it ends, LTE, location sharing, parental supervision, and calling or messaging may stop, leaving the watch with limited usefulness. Google says subscriptions are generally nonrefundable except where law requires otherwise or for cases such as erroneous charges. Manage a subscription in the Fitbit Ace app under profile picture or initials → Subscriptions, or through Google Payments Center. Google’s subscription terms and cancellation instructions have details.

Does the child need a phone? What does the parent need?
The child does not need a phone or a separate cellular data plan. The parent does need a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or newer, or an iPhone running iOS 16 or newer, with the Fitbit Ace app. The app is used for setup, account supervision, contacts, location, and settings. Google’s compatibility and feature specifications list supported phones.

Who can the child call and message?
Ace LTE supports calls, messages, and voice memos with parent-managed contacts; the official specifications list up to 20 contacts. This is not ordinary texting to any phone number. Contacts generally need the Fitbit Ace app on a compatible phone, and the child cannot call a phone without that app. Google’s contact guidance also says the standard trusted-contact arrangement does not let the child call or message friends and siblings, although Google Family members and Family Chat have separate support. Calling and messaging help and contact permissions explain the distinctions.
Some message synchronization can require the connected phone to be online, even though calls can work without the parent’s phone nearby. Family Chat is for members of the child’s Google Family group who have signed into the Fitbit Ace app or have an Ace LTE of their own; at least three family members are required. Family Chat requirements are listed by Google.
How location sharing and parental controls work
A parent requests the watch’s location in the Fitbit Ace app. Location sharing requires an active Ace Pass, a supervised Google Account, location sharing enabled, a powered-on watch, recent activity, and adequate GPS/network and internet conditions. It is a way to check the watch’s location when conditions allow—not guaranteed live surveillance. A powered-off or inactive watch, weak GPS reception, or lost connection can leave the app without a current location. Google also documents supported circumstances in which the app can indicate whether the watch is off the child’s wrist. See location sharing setup and device-location guidance.

School time: what it blocks and how to set it
School time can restrict games and Bit Valley, silence notifications, and stop incoming calls from ringing or being received during scheduled periods. The child can still call and message parents when needed. The feature requires active Ace Pass, and it does not override a school’s device rules: check whether cellular watches are allowed.
- Open the Fitbit Ace app and select the child’s card.
- Tap Settings, then School time.
- Turn on Weekly schedule.
- Choose the school days and times. Google’s current help says one lunch-break period can be configured for all school days.
See Google’s instructions for setting up School time and what it does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Games, movement, and the child’s experience
The watch turns movement into part of its entertainment loop through activity goals, Daily Quests, Fitbit Arcade games, Bit Valley, and Eejie character customization. It also supports alarms and optional Ace Bands with game-related features. That can make activity tracking more engaging for a child who likes goals and rewards, but the games’ appeal depends on the child; they are not a guaranteed draw. Game and Bit Valley updates depend on Wi-Fi and service conditions.

Google rates the watch for 16+ hours under its stated test conditions. Its charging estimates are about 30 minutes to 60% (roughly 11 hours’ estimated use) and 70 minutes to 100% (16+ hours’ estimated use). These figures are not a guarantee for every child: LTE, GPS, calls, games, display brightness, signal strength, and usage affect runtime. Plan on daily charging, often overnight. Google’s full specifications and technical support details provide the figures and conditions.
Safety limits parents should understand
Not an emergency phone: Ace LTE cannot call 911 or other emergency services, another Ace LTE, or an ordinary phone unless the recipient uses the Fitbit Ace app. Coverage or location can also fail when the watch is disconnected, powered off, inactive, or without usable GPS/network access. Treat its calls and location as family communication tools, not an emergency-service substitute. Make sure the child knows how to reach an adult or emergency services through another available phone or trusted person. Google’s service limitations and setup and calling guidance document these restrictions.
- Coverage and travel: LTE availability depends on supported coverage, and Ace Pass does not include roaming.
- School rules: School time is a control, not permission; a school may prohibit cellular watches.
- Payment: The specification page lists Tap to Pay as coming soon, so do not count on it as an available feature without confirming current local availability.
Privacy: restricted access is not the same as no data collection
Ace LTE is parent-managed and more restricted than a smartphone, but it remains a cloud-connected Google service. Google’s child privacy materials say the service may collect information supplied during setup and generated through use, including name, birth date, movement/activity, location, account and family-group information, and payment-related information when payment features are used. Parents manage much of the account and communication access; approved contacts or family members may see the child’s name and selected activity or social information depending on the feature. Review Google’s child and teen privacy information before enabling sharing.
Who should choose Fitbit Ace LTE?
Ace LTE is a good fit for families who want to delay a smartphone while giving a child parent-controlled calling, messaging, and location sharing; have reliable coverage where the child goes; accept the recurring subscription and daily charging; and are comfortable managing Google family accounts. Its controlled contacts and activity games will suit some children better than others.
Choose another kind of device if the child needs emergency calling, unrestricted calls or ordinary SMS, international roaming, robust navigation or third-party apps, multi-day battery life, or service without a continuing subscription. GPS-only trackers make more sense when location is the sole need; a basic or restricted phone is better when ordinary phone-number access and emergency calling matter. Alternative watches vary in coverage, plans, functions, and school compatibility, so compare those specifics rather than assuming another device solves every limitation.
Quick Recap
When something does not work
- The watch is unreachable: Check battery, airplane mode, LTE coverage, GPS conditions, and whether it has connected recently.
- The location looks stale: The watch may be powered off, inactive, indoors or otherwise blocked from GPS, or disconnected.
- A parent cannot call during school: School time is designed to block incoming calls; change the schedule only when appropriate and permitted.
- No contacts appear: Add trusted contacts in the Fitbit Ace app and confirm recipients meet the app/account requirements.
- Messages do not sync: Check that the connected parent phone is online for functions that require synchronization.
- Setup fails: Check phone OS compatibility, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Google account configuration, and Ace Pass activation.
- Service stops after cancellation: It is expected once the paid billing period ends.
- Travel abroad: Roaming is not included; do not rely on service outside supported coverage.
- More than one child: Each watch needs its own Ace Pass.
