Recommended Watching: James May and the Quartz Watch

James May’s short BBC Earth Lab video is an accessible entry point to quartz watches. Here’s what it covers, how the technology works and what watch reports actually establish about May’s own wristwear.

For a concise introduction to quartz-watch technology, start with BBC Earth Lab’s “How Does a Quartz Watch Work? | James May’s Q&A | Earth Lab”. The video runs about 4 minutes 17 seconds and is the subject of a September 23, 2019, recommendation by James Robinson at Time+Tide Watches. May brings an accessible, technically minded presenter’s perspective to a subject with a much bigger story than the familiar ticking second hand suggests.

The video behind the recommendation

Time+Tide’s article recommends a BBC Earth Lab video, rather than offering a full technical tutorial of its own. Its stated appeal is a short explanation of quartz engineering, history and practical applications. The video is a useful starting point for viewers who want the basic idea without a specialist-level account; it is not a movement teardown or a comprehensive history of the quartz crisis.

Watch “How Does a Quartz Watch Work? | James May’s Q&A | Earth Lab” on YouTube.

May is a natural host for an engineering topic because his public work as an automotive journalist and presenter includes *Top Gear* and *The Grand Tour*. That makes the explanation approachable to viewers who know him from cars and science programming. It does not make him a watchmaker or horological engineer, and the recommendation should be understood as accessible science presentation rather than specialist watch instruction.

How a quartz watch keeps time

A quartz watch uses an electronic circuit and a vibrating crystal as its timekeeping reference. In a typical analog quartz watch, the chain works like this:

  1. Power: A battery supplies electricity to the watch’s circuit.
  2. Oscillation: The circuit excites a small quartz crystal, which vibrates at a stable frequency.
  3. Division: The circuit counts and divides those rapid vibrations into regular timing pulses. A common nominal crystal frequency is 32,768 Hz; repeated division by two yields one pulse per second.
  4. Movement: In an analog watch, a pulse drives a small stepper motor, which advances the hands through the gear train. In a digital watch, the circuit uses timing signals to update the display instead.

The crystal’s regular oscillation gives quartz watches a dependable timekeeping reference, but it does not make every quartz watch perfectly accurate. Performance varies with the movement, temperature, age, condition and regulation. Quartz also describes a broad family of watches: ordinary battery models, solar-powered quartz, high-accuracy movements and quartz chronographs can differ substantially in design and upkeep.

Why quartz changed the watch industry

Time+Tide describes quartz as having “almost single-handedly and irreversibly destroyed” the Swiss mechanical-watch industry. That is memorable editorial shorthand, not a complete explanation of the crisis. Quartz watches could offer strong accuracy, convenience and lower-cost mass production, while Japanese manufacturers became major forces in the technology’s spread. Those advantages put severe pressure on traditional mechanical-watch makers.

The Swiss industry’s difficulties had more than one cause, including manufacturing structures, delayed technological adoption, changing consumer preferences, currency pressures and competition from inexpensive electronic watches. Mechanical watchmaking survived; it later found a renewed position in luxury, craft and heritage. Quartz did not make mechanical watches obsolete so much as change what many buyers valued and what the industry had to compete on.

What is known about James May’s watches?

The original recommendation mentions May wearing a vintage Omega Chrono-Quartz, a Rolex Milgauss reference 116400WO and an IWC Portuguese Chronograph. Separate watch coverage identifies May in photographs with a Rolex Milgauss, an Omega Seamaster Chrono Quartz and an IWC Portuguese Chronograph. The naming of the Omega differs between the articles, so it is safest to retain the publication’s own wording rather than assume every reference identifies the same specific model.

Monochrome Watches’ roundup reports the Omega as a Seamaster Chrono-Quartz and describes it as an early digital-analog chronograph, launched for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. These are the publication’s historical claims; the available coverage does not establish a complete watch collection or prove ownership of every watch May has been seen wearing.

WatchRanker has also associated May with a Rado Ceramica, but that is secondary reporting, not definitive confirmation that it belongs to him. “Photographed wearing” or “reported wearing” is more accurate than treating watch-spotting articles as an inventory of his possessions.

Quartz options—and what to consider before buying

If the video prompts you to try a quartz watch, the useful distinction is not simply quartz versus mechanical. Different quartz designs serve different priorities:

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Black Dive Watch (MDV106-1A)
  • Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
  • Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
  • Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
  • Anti-reverse bezel
  • Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
  • Standard battery quartz: A practical choice for accurate, uncomplicated timekeeping. It needs periodic battery replacement, and routine battery changes are not the same as never needing service.
  • Solar quartz: Uses light to recharge an internal energy store, reducing routine battery changes. The rechargeable cell or capacitor may still eventually need attention.
  • High-accuracy or thermocompensated quartz: Uses more specialized design or components to improve timekeeping, often at a higher cost. Accuracy still depends on the individual movement and its conditions.
  • Quartz chronograph: Adds stopwatch functions and may use a more complex electronic module. An analog-digital layout can be especially distinctive, as vintage Chrono-Quartz designs demonstrate.
  • Vintage quartz: Offers a direct connection to the technology’s history, but age can make electronic modules, displays and parts difficult to repair. A decades-old watch’s water resistance should not be assumed from its original rating.
  • Mechanical or automatic: Relies on a spring-driven movement rather than a battery-powered quartz oscillator. It can appeal for its engineering and craft, but its ownership and servicing trade-offs differ from those of quartz.

A vintage Omega Chrono-Quartz is therefore a collector’s project, not simply an inexpensive way to own a quartz watch. Before buying one, verify that its display and functions work, ask about service history and parts availability, and have its present condition assessed. A quartz watch generally needs less routine intervention than a mechanical one, but it may still need battery and gasket replacement, case and crown checks, module repair or accuracy checks.

Who should watch it?

The roughly four-minute video is best suited to James May fans, watch newcomers and general science viewers looking for a quick, friendly entry point. It can also give mechanical-watch enthusiasts a compact reminder that quartz is a consequential branch of horology, not merely a cheap alternative. Viewers seeking repair instructions, detailed electronics, a full history of the quartz crisis or current prices for vintage watches will need more specialized, model-specific information.
