Fitbit Agreed to Pay $12.25 Million Over Delayed Reporting of Ionic Burn Hazard

Fitbit’s $12.25 million Ionic settlement concerned alleged delayed reporting of a burn hazard—not direct compensation for consumers. Here is how the 2022 recall, $299 refund, affected models, and safety steps fit together.

Fitbit did not pay $12.25 million directly to people burned by its Ionic smartwatch. On January 23, 2025, Fitbit LLC agreed to a $12.25 million civil penalty settlement with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The allegation concerned Fitbit’s failure to promptly report information about an overheating and burn hazard. The separate Ionic recall began on March 2, 2022 and offered eligible consumers a $299 refund for returned watches.

Why Fitbit was penalized

The CPSC alleged that Fitbit knowingly failed to immediately report information that reasonably supported the conclusion that Ionic smartwatches contained a defect capable of creating a substantial product hazard or an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death.

That distinction matters. The enforcement action was about the alleged delay in reporting the hazard to the CPSC—not simply the fact that some watches overheated or injured users. Fitbit agreed to the settlement without the penalty being described as compensation for individual consumers.

The CPSC announcement described the settlement as provisionally accepted. The agreement and related order were published in the Federal Register on January 27, 2025, as 90 FR 8201. The listed public-comment deadline was February 11, 2025.

What happened to Ionic users?

According to CPSC recall information, the Ionic’s lithium-ion battery could overheat while the watch was being worn, creating a burn hazard. CPSC reported:

  • At least 115 U.S. overheating incidents
  • 78 U.S. burn injuries, including two third-degree burns and four second-degree burns
  • 59 international overheating incidents
  • 40 international burn injuries

These figures are reported incidents supplied in connection with the recall, not necessarily a complete worldwide count or a finding that every report was independently medically verified. CPSC also said that approximately 1 million Ionic watches had been sold in the United States and about 693,000 internationally.

The Ionic recall began in 2022

Fitbit and the CPSC announced the recall on March 2, 2022—nearly three years before the civil-penalty announcement. The recall required consumers to stop using the watch and contact Fitbit for prepaid return packaging. Fitbit said it would issue a $299 refund after receiving the returned device. Participating consumers could also receive a 40% discount code for selected Fitbit products.

The recall covered the Ionic model family identified by model number FB503. The model number appears on the back of the watch near the band attachment.

The recalled watch had a polyurethane band and a 1.4-inch color LCD display. The evidence concerns the recalled Ionic, not Fitbit products generally. It should not be extended automatically to Versa, Sense, Charge, Inspire, or other Fitbit models.

Does the $12.25 million go to consumers?

Not according to the cited CPSC settlement materials. The $12.25 million is a civil penalty paid through the U.S. government’s CPSC enforcement process. It is not described as a compensation fund for people who suffered burns.

The consumer remedy was handled through the earlier recall: return the recalled Ionic through Fitbit’s recall process and receive the stated refund, subject to the terms and availability of that process. The settlement does not, by itself, establish a separate private legal claim, class-action recovery, or guaranteed payment for every Ionic owner or injured person.

What current Ionic owners should do

  1. Stop wearing and charging the watch. Do not continue using an Ionic that may be covered by the recall.
  2. Check the model number. Look for FB503 on the back of the device and compare the full model code with the recalled variants above.
  3. Use the official recall channel. Start with the CPSC recall page for the current instructions and Fitbit contact route, since support details can change.
  4. Do not sell, donate, or give away the watch. The recall notice warned that federal law prohibits selling products subject to a Commission-ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
  5. Follow the return instructions. The recall process called for prepaid packaging and a refund after Fitbit received the device.

If the watch is hot, swollen, damaged, or showing other battery-warning signs, avoid handling it unnecessarily and follow current official safety guidance rather than attempting a repair or disposal method on your own.

What Fitbit agreed to do beyond the payment

The settlement included obligations relating to Fitbit’s compliance program. The company agreed to maintain and enhance internal controls and provide annual reports concerning its compliance program, policies, systems, training, audits, and related controls.

Timeline

  • 2018–2020: According to CPSC materials, Fitbit received numerous reports of Ionic watches overheating while worn, including burn reports.
  • Early 2020: Fitbit initiated a firmware update intended to mitigate possible battery overheating; CPSC said reports continued.
  • March 2, 2022: Fitbit and CPSC announced the Ionic recall.
  • January 23, 2025: CPSC announced Fitbit’s agreement to pay a $12.25 million civil penalty over the alleged failure to report the hazard promptly.
  • January 27, 2025: The settlement agreement and related order appeared in the Federal Register.

The bottom line for Ionic owners

The headline “Fitbit fined $12 million over Ionic burns” is broadly accurate but incomplete. The precise issue was a $12.25 million civil penalty settlement over the CPSC’s allegation that Fitbit failed to immediately report a serious burn hazard. The underlying Ionic recall was a separate 2022 process that offered a $299 refund for returned recalled watches.

If you still have an Ionic, check for model FB503, stop wearing or charging it, and follow the current instructions on the official CPSC recall page. Do not assume that the government penalty is money you can claim directly.
