The Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition had a clear running focus, adding six guided Adidas workouts and distinctive styling to the original Ionic. But it is not a sensible watch to buy or keep using today: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the Ionic, including Adidas model FB503WTNV, over an overheating battery that caused burns. Owners should stop using an affected watch and contact Fitbit about the recall remedy.
What distinguished the Adidas Edition?
Announced by Fitbit on February 27, 2018, with store availability announced for March 19, the Adidas Edition combined the Ionic’s advertised fitness and smartwatch features with a two-tone Ink Blue and Ice Gray sport band, an Adidas race-bib-inspired watch face available in four colors, and the adidas Train app. Fitbit said the app included six on-screen workouts focused on running form, power, speed, strength, and flexibility. The announced launch price was $329.95; that is a 2018 price, not a current market value. Fitbit’s launch announcement describes the edition and its original features.

What did the Ionic offer on paper?
Fitbit advertised up to five days of battery life for the Ionic, along with built-in GPS, continuous heart-rate tracking, run detection, auto-pause and auto-lap, estimated VO2 max, water resistance to 50 meters, onboard music, contactless payments, activity and sleep tracking, and access to its App Gallery. Its Ionic manual lists hardware including GPS with GLONASS, an optical heart-rate tracker, accelerometer, altimeter, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC.
These are historical product descriptions, not confirmation that apps, payments, music, or other connected services remain available today. The launch materials also do not provide independent test results for this specific edition, so its advertised battery life and features should not be treated as measured performance.

Was the Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition recalled?
Yes. The CPSC’s March 2, 2022 recall notice explicitly includes Adidas Edition model FB503WTNV, described in Ink Blue and Ice Gray/Silver Gray. The hazard was an overheating lithium-ion battery that could cause burns. The notice reported at least 115 U.S. overheating reports and 78 U.S. burn injuries, including two third-degree and four second-degree burns. It also reported 59 overheating reports and 40 burn injuries internationally. These are counts reported in the notice, not an independently calculated rate of injury. The recall covered about one million units in the United States and about 693,000 internationally. See the CPSC recall notice.
What should owners do?
The CPSC’s instruction is: “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches and contact Fitbit to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device.” The notice described a $299 refund after Fitbit received the returned watch, plus a discount code for select Fitbit devices. Since remedy terms and availability can change, contact Fitbit to confirm the current process rather than relying on the original offer details.
In January 2025, the CPSC announced that Fitbit had agreed to a $12.25 million civil penalty concerning failure to immediately report the serious burn hazard. The agency said Fitbit had received overheating reports during 2018 and 2019, continuing into 2020. That regulatory development is separate from the 2022 recall remedy. The CPSC’s 2025 announcement provides details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it a worthy challenger?
As an archival product concept, the Adidas Edition was a running-oriented take on the Ionic: its edition-specific appeal was the guided adidas Train workouts, race-inspired face, and two-tone band. Existing Ionic bands were described as compatible, but changing accessories does nothing to address the recalled battery hazard. The recall makes the historical feature set irrelevant to a present-day purchase decision.
There is also no basis here for ranking its running performance against current watches. The available product descriptions document what Fitbit advertised, but do not establish how well the watch performed in independent testing or whether its connected services still work. For current owners, the practical decision is clear: stop using an affected Ionic and pursue the recall remedy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition have Adidas workouts?
Yes. Fitbit said the adidas Train app included six on-screen workouts focused on running form, power, speed, strength, and flexibility. This describes the original offering; it does not confirm that the app or workouts remain available today.
Does the Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition have built-in GPS?
Fitbit advertised GPS on the Ionic, and the manual lists GPS with GLONASS. That is a historical specification, not a guarantee about current connected services or performance.
Can I keep using my Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition if I change the band?
No. The CPSC recall includes Adidas model FB503WTNV and tells consumers to stop using recalled Ionic watches because of the overheating and burn hazard. A different band does not address the battery risk.
