These are revival ideas, not five announced launches. The histories below follow Rhonda Riche’s Watchonista feature of September 21, 2026; its claims have not been independently verified against brand archives.
Five different ways to bring a watch name back
A heritage revival is most convincing when it preserves what made a name recognizable, rather than borrowing an old logo to sell an unrelated watch. Riche’s wish list points to several possible approaches, from a focused new collection to institutional recognition. It does not establish that any of the five brands has a relaunch planned.

Elgin: make the breadth of its history an asset
Riche dates Elgin’s founding to 1863 and describes it as a prominent American watchmaker whose output ranged from mostly inexpensive, reliable watches to upscale collections. According to her account, domestic production ended in 1964 and the company officially closed in 1967. That range matters: a revival would need to choose which parts of Elgin’s legacy it intends to represent, rather than suggest that every watch bearing the name belongs to one consistent tradition.

The design possibilities are unusually varied. Riche singles out Art Deco-era wristwatches, including the Lady Elgin “Tiger and the Lady,” as well as the luxury self-winding Lord Elgin line. Her proposed collection would draw from three different periods: enameled cases from the 1920s, “doctor’s” dual-dial watches from the 1930s and 1940s, and Lord Elgin direct-read watches from the 1950s. That is a useful starting point for a small collection, provided each design is clearly tied to its historical reference and adapted as a modern watch rather than passed off as a reproduction.

There is a practical identity challenge, too. Riche notes that the Elgin name has changed hands repeatedly and that later watches carrying it vary in quality. Any new project would have to make its provenance and standards clear enough for buyers to distinguish a considered revival from the name’s more complicated later history.
Gruen: revive the shape, not just the name
Riche dates Gruen’s formation to 1876 and describes it as an early US watch company to offer Swiss-produced movements cased in the United States. She also connects some Gruen movements with Jean Aegler, who later became Hans Wilsdorf’s business partner. One notable feature of the brand’s history is its “formed” movements, which allowed case designs that departed from a simple round watch.

The strongest revival case is therefore visual as well as mechanical. Gruen’s mid-century Veri-Thin watches and 1930s Curvex models offer two recognizable directions; the Curvex’s case and calibre curved around the wrist. Riche imagines an independent brand interpreting these ideas for modern wear. The key would be to preserve the logic of the original form—especially how the watch sits on the wrist—instead of treating vintage styling as surface decoration.
Lemania: a movement legacy suited to careful stewardship
Riche traces Lemania to A. Lugrin, founded in 1884 by former Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmaker Alfred Lugrin. Her account says the company became Lemania Watch Company in 1930, joined Omega and Tissot in the SSIH group in 1932, and supplied chronograph movements to sister brands for decades. She also reports that Lemania ébauches contributed to the Calibre 321 used in the original Omega Speedmaster from 1957 to 1968, and notes Lemania-derived movements in several Patek Philippe references.

The later ownership history is part of the revival question. Riche says the company became Nouvelle Lémania in 1981, was bought by Breguet in 1992, and later came under Swatch Group through Breguet. Given that the case for Lemania rests heavily on movement expertise and its place in a broader supply history, a revival under a larger luxury house is a more natural fit than a name-only relaunch. It could give the technical legacy context, but any specific modern product or plan remains a proposal in the feature, not an announced development.
Le Phare and Jean d’Eve: complications with a bolder design language
Riche says Le Phare began in 1888 as Barbezat-Baillot, making complicated watches including repeaters, and adopted the Le Phare name in 1905. She describes a later design direction in the 1970s built around semi-precious dials, asymmetrical forms and retrograde displays. In her account, Jean d’Eve was a higher-end sister brand developed in the 1980s, with models including the Spinnaker, Sectora and Sumara.

This pairing could support a revival that is less about reproducing one classic silhouette and more about restoring a taste for unusual displays and expressive materials. Riche calls the Sumara the world’s first automatic quartz watch; because that superlative is not independently established here, it is best treated as her feature’s characterization rather than settled fact.
Riche also gives approximate vintage-market figures: around $2,000 for a time-only Le Phare, around $5,000 for a tri-compax example, and an average of about $2,000 for Jean d’Eve retrograde models. These are her estimates, not verified current transaction data, and should not be read as prices for every condition, reference or market.

Bueche Girod: recognition may matter more than a relaunch
Riche dates Bueche Girod’s formation to 1947 and names Vital Bueche and his wife, Edwige Girod, as its namesakes. She says its movements were used by Cartier, Bulova and Universal Genève during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The brand is associated in her account with high jewelry designs, concealed gold coin watches, diamond-set cases and gemstone dials; she says it ceased operations during the early-1980s recession.
Not every heritage name needs a new product line to receive meaningful attention. Riche suggests a museum exhibition or themed auction as ways to acknowledge Bueche Girod’s contribution. That approach suits a brand whose story is tied to both jewelry-watch design and movement supply: it could make the work visible without assuming that a commercial relaunch is the only measure of historical importance.
What “comeback” means in this list
Riche’s proposals are deliberately varied: a collection for Elgin, an independent interpretation of Gruen, luxury-house stewardship for Lemania, an enthusiast-led return for Le Phare and Jean d’Eve, or historical recognition for Bueche Girod. The common thread is not a single recipe for revival, but the idea that each name should return—if it does—on terms shaped by its own watchmaking history.
