The five Rolex models below are a good fit if you want a watch that stands apart from the usual Submariner-and-Datejust shortlist: the Air-King, the Perpetual 1908, the Yacht-Master, the Yacht-Master II and the Oyster Perpetual. “Outside the box” is an editorial lens here. It means distinctive in design or function, and it does not mean rare, undervalued or easy to buy. Every spec below is Rolex’s own statement, not an independent test.
The five at a glance
| Model | What sets it apart | Key stated facts | Best for |

1. Air-King: the aviation-flavoured dial
The Air-King’s character comes from its face. The black dial has large 3, 6 and 9 numerals and a prominent minutes scale. A green seconds hand, a green Rolex name and a yellow crown emblem add colour. Rolex says the Air-King joined its watch family in 1958. It describes the current model as 40 mm in Oystersteel.
The aviation link is heritage and styling, and Rolex doesn’t present the watch as a pilot’s instrument. Buy it for the dial’s graphic boldness. Don’t buy it for any practical flying function.
2. Perpetual 1908: the dressy one with a window
Rolex describes the 1908 as an elegant model, and it has a transparent sapphire case back, which is unusual among Rolex’s more familiar designs. Through it you can see calibre 7140, which Rolex says has the following:
#1 Best Overall
- Automatic L898 Movement, Hours, minutes, small seconds at 3 o'clock. Chronograph mechanism: central 60 seconds hand, 12 hours counter at 6 o'clock and 30 minutes counter at 9 o'clock. Screw-down and transparent with sapphire crystal case back
- Stainless steel with triple safety folding clasp and push-piece opening mechanism
- 5 Year International Warranty
- an approximate 66-hour power reserve
- a Syloxi hairspring
- a Chronergy escapement
- Paraflex shock absorbers
Rolex states a precision standard of −2/+2 seconds per day, and its 1908 overview gives 50 metres (165 feet) of water resistance. That rating is modest next to Rolex’s sports watches, which fits a watch meant for dress occasions. Rolex’s 1908 page quotes Hans Wilsdorf: “Rolex must continuously strive to think and act differently from the rest.” The page gives his name without a role, so it is attributed here the same way.
3. Yacht-Master: choose your metal and size
Rolex says the Yacht-Master launched in 1992. It comes in 37, 40 and 42 mm, which is a wider size spread than most single-purpose Rolex models. Current materials include gold alloys, steel-and-gold combinations, platinum and RLX titanium. Rolex calls RLX titanium strong and light. If low weight on the wrist matters to you, that option is worth a close look.

- WATER RESISTANT MEN'S WATCHES: Up to 50m (165ft); wearable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but not diving or snorkeling; 5 ATM
The model is also tied to the Oysterflex bracelet. Rolex says it was introduced in 2015 on the Yacht-Master 37 and describes it as an elastomer-overmoulded metal-blade construction. This gives a sportier, softer-feeling alternative to a metal bracelet.
4. Yacht-Master II: the regatta timer
This is the most specialised watch here. Rolex’s page describes a redesigned generation presented in 2026. The countdown is programmable using the lower pusher, and the remaining time is displayed counterclockwise. The function is built around the countdown to a sailing race start. If you don’t sail, it is a conversation piece and a mechanical showcase more than a daily tool. If you do, it is the clearest functional match on this list.

5. Oyster Perpetual: the quiet counterpoint
Rolex lists the Oyster Perpetual in its current collection and labels it “Quintessentially Rolex.” Next to the aviation dial, display back, material choices and regatta countdown above, its appeal is restraint. Specific dial colours, sizes and references change over time, so confirm the exact current configuration with Rolex or an authorised jeweller before you settle on one.
How to choose among them
- Visual character: the Air-King’s high-contrast dial is the boldest. The Oyster Perpetual is the calmest.
- Function: the Yacht-Master II has a specialised countdown. The 1908 offers movement visibility and a long power reserve rather than a complication.
- Size and wrist presence: the Air-King is 40 mm. The Yacht-Master spans 37 to 42 mm.
- Materials: the Yacht-Master has the widest range, including titanium and platinum.
These are category distinctions drawn from Rolex’s descriptions. They aren’t wear tests, and they don’t rank value, comfort, reliability or resale.
Buying notes
Rolex’s current collection shows which families are in production, not what a given store has in stock. Rolex says only official Rolex jewellers may sell and maintain its watches, so use Rolex’s official retailer locator to verify a dealer. Prices vary by region and configuration, so check the official page for your market. Be especially careful with third-party marketplace listings. Confirm the exact reference and condition, check the seller’s credentials and look for authenticity protection. A marketplace listing is not an authorised Rolex channel.
