Shinola has added an automatic collection to its Duck line, which until now was quartz. The Duck Automatic uses Japanese Miyota movements: the 9015 with roughly 42 hours of reserve, and a Miyota 9085 Premium with roughly 80 hours. The launch campaign is as notable as the watch. It is built around distraction, internet culture and, yes, watching ducks.
What the Duck Automatic is
Shinola’s Duck Automatic collection page calls it the first Duck powered by a Japanese movement. The wrist’s motion turns a rotor that charges the power reserve, so no battery is needed. The original Duck remains a quartz sport watch, with a stainless-steel case, screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel, sapphire crystal, luminous dial and hands, and a basketweave-textured rubber strap, per Shinola’s Duck Sport Watch page. The automatic therefore widens the line rather than replacing the quartz.

In practice, 42 hours means a watch left off the wrist for a weekend may need a wind or a few minutes of wear to restart. The 80-hour figure comfortably covers a long weekend.

The four variants and launch prices
Global Timepiece News describes four variants: two stainless-steel watches, a gold PVD model, and a limited gift-set version that adds a gray basketweave dive rubber strap. Reported launch prices were $895 for the standard steel versions and $1,095 for the gold PVD watch and the gift set. These are launch-period figures from that outlet, so confirm current price and stock on Shinola’s site.

The campaign: get distracted, watch ducks
According to FashionUnited, the campaign features Tefi Pessoa, Kareem Rahma, Benton McClintock and rapper NEMS. The idea is to encourage people to get distracted, touch grass and watch ducks rather than treat every moment as a productivity task.
Creative director Jonathan Bailey told FashionUnited: “The internet is where a lot of culture happens now, so it would be strange for a brand like Shinola to pretend otherwise.”

The Cheerios Duck Watching Snack
The collaboration with Cheerios produced a limited snack box. FashionUnited reports that fewer than 100 boxes were made, for select Shinola-hosted events. Bailey said: “We didn’t want to make a conventional co-branded product; We wanted to create a little artifact that made people smile and gave them another reason to stop, look around and, hopefully, watch some ducks, so to speak.” It is an event collectible, not something to plan a purchase around.
Global Timepiece News adds that early Duck Automatic buyers at the New York Windup fair (October 16–18) were to receive the box and merchandise designed by Japanese artist SAKIE. That promotion is tied to the event, so check whether it still applies.

How to choose between versions
- Reserve: the 9015 (about 42 hours) suits regular wearers; the 9085 Premium (about 80 hours) suits rotation collectors.
- Finish: steel or gold PVD, with the dial varying by model.
- Extras: only the gift set is reported to include the additional gray rubber strap.
- Price: a reported $200 step up from steel to gold PVD or gift set at launch.
No sales figures or campaign-performance data were found, so the “popular” label in the headline rests on the Duck’s profile, not on published numbers. This article is based on Shinola’s pages and press coverage, not hands-on testing.
