The IWC Yacht Club II is often associated with Gérald Genta, but his authorship is not confirmed by surviving project records cited by IWC’s museum curator. The watch is a late-1970s family of angular, octagonal-bezel models—not one fixed specification—with automatic and quartz examples, different sizes and varied materials.
Did Gérald Genta design the IWC Yacht Club II?
The answer is uncertain. British GQ quoted David Seyffer, curator of IWC’s museum in Schaffhausen, saying the Yacht Club II’s resemblance to Genta’s other designs is striking, but that “there are no surviving documents from this project in our archives.” Seyffer distinguishes it from the Ingenieur SL, which he describes as Genta’s documented IWC project. British GQ’s account places the Yacht Club II connection in IWC’s oral tradition rather than establishing it with an archival design record.
A different account appeared in a 2009 post on the IWC Collectors Forum. The post’s author, Jack Freedman, said he had received a reply through Genta’s personal assistant, forwarded from Madame Genta, stating that Genta did not design the watch. Freedman later acknowledged that the message had passed through several people and that he had not spoken directly with Genta. It is therefore a secondhand report, not a signed statement or archival document. The forum discussion also shows that readers questioned whether the report settled the matter.
The most defensible conclusion is that the Yacht Club II is frequently linked to Genta, while the evidence cited by IWC’s museum curator does not confirm his authorship. Its visual resemblance to other watches associated with him cannot, by itself, prove who designed it.

What is the IWC Yacht Club II?
Dr. Crott Auctioneers’ 106th auction catalogue dates the model’s introduction to 1977 and describes an angular case, integrated bracelet and large, polished octagonal bezel. These details come from auction catalogue copy; they are not a surviving launch document. The shape gives the watch a strong architectural presence, but the Yacht Club II should be understood as a range rather than a single unchanging design or specification.
How did the range vary?
Dr. Crott’s catalogue describes four size categories—jumbo, midsize, large ladies’ and small ladies’—and versions in steel, two-tone, gold and diamond-set gold. It also says early examples used automatic IWC movements and that quartz calibres came later. Those broad descriptions do not identify the configuration of every individual watch, so the reference and movement matter when assessing a particular example.

The auction catalogue places the Yacht Club II among high-end steel watches of its era and refers to the quartz crisis as historical context. That background does not establish IWC’s specific commercial motives for introducing or changing the range, or how well the watch sold. The cited sources do not provide a model-wide production total, sales figure or market-size statistic. Auction estimates and measurements describe particular lots, not the whole Yacht Club II family.
