It is a smaller, simpler take on the Big Pilot rather than a flight instrument; the “flying on auto” phrase is playful, not evidence of aviation testing.
What changed on the Big Pilot 43?
IWC introduced the 43 mm model on April 7, 2021, at the digital Watches & Wonders exhibition. It retained the Big Pilot’s conical crown and aviation-instrument styling while removing the date and power-reserve displays for a cleaner three-hand dial. IWC said the design drew inspiration from a 1940s military observation watch; the modern Big Pilot Ref. 5002 was reintroduced in 2002. IWC’s 2021 launch announcement documents that context.
The smaller diameter is the headline change, not proof that every element is simply scaled down. Fratello’s 2021 review compares the 43 mm watch with a 46.2 mm Big Pilot, a 3.2 mm difference in diameter. That is the review’s comparison, not a full engineering comparison of the models. Lex Stolk’s review also describes the 43 as 13.6 mm thick.
What are the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 specifications?

The launch announcement also described rubber and calfskin strap options using EasX-CHANGE, plus a five-link steel bracelet with a fine adjustment clasp. Current accessory availability and fit can vary, so confirm compatibility by reference rather than assuming a strap or bracelet fits every Big Pilot 43. See IWC’s launch announcement for the original configurations.
What does calibre 82100 offer?
IWC describes calibre 82100 as an automatic movement with Pellaton winding. The rotor winds the mainspring through movement in either direction; IWC says ceramic components are used in parts of the winding system. The stated reserve is 60 hours when fully wound, and the movement is visible through the display back. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results.

Do not read the open back as proof that the movement is entirely anti-magnetic. In the Fratello review, CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr answered no when asked whether it was made entirely from anti-magnetic materials. Stolk reports that Grainger-Herr explained IWC used modern materials intended to contain magnetic disturbance sufficiently and chose an open case back. That account is attributed to the speaker and the review, not a complete technical specification of magnetic resistance.

It is smaller in diameter than the 46.2 mm Big Pilot used for comparison in the Fratello review, but diameter alone cannot establish how a watch will fit a particular wrist. In his May 23, 2021 review, Lex Stolk said the short, curved lugs helped the 43 × 13.6 mm case sit comfortably on his wrist and that he found it effortless to wear for hours. He tried the blue strap and steel bracelet supplied for the review, preferred the calfskin aesthetically, and praised the bracelet’s taper and fine adjustment. Those are his personal impressions, not universal fit data or a guarantee of comfort.

Stolk also described the dial as quickly legible through the convex, double anti-reflective-coated sapphire crystal, noting crisp white Arabic numerals and rhodium-plated hands. That is a reviewer’s visual assessment; IWC’s product specification confirms the crystal treatment for IW329303.
Is it an aviation instrument?
The Big Pilot 43 carries aviation-inspired styling, and IWC’s launch release presents the Big Pilot as part of its heritage of instruments for aviators. Neither that description nor the “flying on auto” wording establishes flight certification, cockpit suitability, or a test in aviation. Treat it as a mechanical wristwatch with pilot-watch design cues unless a separate certification or operational claim is documented.
