The Fortis Flieger F-39 is a modern pilot-style watch built around a compact 39 mm case, a bidirectional 12-hour bezel and a choice of bracelet or strap configurations. Its specs make it a versatile everyday option, but Fortis’s stated Swiss Air Force collaboration is not evidence that the watch is currently issued or independently tested for operational use.
What makes the Flieger F-39 different?
The F-39 pairs familiar pilot-watch cues—a high-contrast black dial and prominent hands—with a 12-hour bezel that can help track a second time zone. The 39 mm case gives it a smaller diameter than many contemporary tool watches, while its 50 mm lug-to-lug length is important to consider for wrist fit. Fortis also offers several dial colors and both bracelet and strap versions, so the F-39 is a family of configurations rather than one fixed specification.
Fortis says the design was developed in collaboration with the Swiss Air Force. That is the brand’s account of the design relationship; the available product information does not establish current military issue, qualification to a military standard or independent comparative legibility testing. Fortis’s description of the watch as “the most legible” is likewise a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result. Fortis Flieger F-39

How do the details work for everyday wear?
Fit: look beyond the 39 mm diameter
The 39 mm case diameter may suit people who prefer a less oversized watch, but the 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement can have a larger effect on how it sits across the wrist. Its 12.5 mm thickness and 79 g watch-head weight provide further context, though bracelet weight and personal fit will vary. If possible, compare the lug-to-lug span with a watch you already wear comfortably.

Timing and visibility
The half-hour markings on the bidirectional bezel offer more specific alignment than a bezel marked only by whole hours. The black dial, green Super-LumiNova and orange seconds hand are concrete design choices intended to distinguish the display. They are not, by themselves, evidence of a tested legibility advantage over other watches.
Water resistance and construction
Fortis lists 200 m water resistance, a screw-down crown with a triple-gasket system, and performance FKM gaskets. Those are substantial water-resistance specifications for a pilot-style watch, but the rating is not a substitute for following the manual’s operating and maintenance guidance. Fortis also specifies a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

Is the Fortis Flieger F-39 a good pilot watch?
It is a capable pilot-style watch if you want a 39 mm case, a second-time-zone bezel, strong stated water resistance and a range of color and attachment options. The main fit question is its 50 mm lug-to-lug span, not just the diameter. Its aviation connection should be understood as Fortis’s stated design collaboration with the Swiss Air Force—not proof of current service use or independent operational qualification.
